Addiction in the family MOM EPISODE
Why are families so important? The Research Families are the primary spport for yong people entering treatment (Financially, emotionally, most often living with a parent) Few sbstance absers enter treatment withot pressre from their networks (Marlatt et al., 1997) Przel and Lamon, 1979, replicated data in 1996 fond that 64% of heroin addicts had daily phone contact with their parents, poly sbstance addicts 51% and non-addicts 9%. Despite the chaos that occrs with addiction, people are still connecting with their families. Engaging the natral spport system significantly improves the chances of entering treatment as well as completion. This leads to improving likelihood of long-term recovery (Simpson, 1981) Families edcated abot addiction and recovery can be the greatest asset in spporting a person s recovery. A family moving toward their own recovery can fnction and stay healthy even if a yong person decides not to take action toward their own recovery.
Research Texas Tech The Institte for the Stdy of Addiction, Recovery, & Families Preliminary data, appears to show family members of an addict can become addicted to their loved one in the same way the addict is addicted to a drg. Showing family members a pictre of whoever is the addict or alcoholic, the way their brain responds is similar to the way the alcoholic's brain responds when they see alcohol If a family member allows his or her well-being and identity to become so wrapped p in the addict's life and recovery, that person's brain may change in ways similar to the brain of a person with a chemical dependency.
Parallel Process According to Krissy Pozatek, Parallel Process is when parents engage dring the therapetic process and grow with their yong person by looking for ways they may be interfering with their yong person s matrity and/or lack their own emotional matrity (Pozatek, 2008) Two important skills: 1. Attnement - McKinnon (2011) says that Attnement - parent s ability to deeply see and nderstand their child. Attned parents see strengths and vlnerabilities and the capacity to foster matrity in the context of that recognition. They commnicate this nderstanding to their child. 2. Attned Limit Setting- knowledge of healthy bondaries establishment and appropriate conseqences for behavior. Stdy explanation of implementation of Parallel Process & findings Pine River Institte in Ontario - 36 bed residential facility with yoth Average LOS was a little over a year.
FINDINGS: High parental attnement (deeply see and nderstand child, nderstanding strengths and vlnerabilities) proved to be the most significant factor for improving emotional health of their yong person, less internalization of problems and higher rates of positive otcomes post treatment. Yoth who scored higher on internalizing problems, had more strict set limits by parents and had less sccess post-treatment. When parents were highly rigid, the tend to overlook needs of their child and be a catalyst for nhealthy emotional reaction for the yoth. This happened when parents scored high on limit setting withot accrate attnement. Findings sggest that with dedicated family work to increase parent skills, an individal can be treated more effectively and for shorter drations. Creighton & Mills, Family Matters: Engaging Parents in Yoth Treatment.
Family Addiction vs Family Recovery Family Patterns in Addiction Family Patterns in Recovery My good feelings abot who I am stem from being liked by yo Yor strggles affect my serenity. My mental attention focses on solving yor problems or relieving yor pain My mental attention is focsed on pleasing yo Althogh I care abot yo and yor strggles, I realize that they are yors and not mine. I focs my attention on my own recovery and nderstand that yor recovery has to be yors My mental attention is focsed on practicing my recovery to improve my life and my family s life Relieving yor pain helps me feel better My own hobbies and interests are pt aside to focs on yo How yo act or look reflects on me Althogh I care abot yor pain, I know that it is not mine and not mine to fix. I focs on my own recovery How other people behave is not abot me. When I forget this, I focs on my recovery I am not aware of how I feel or what I want. bt I am aware of how yo feel or what yo want The dreams I have for my ftre are linked to yo My fear of rejection determines what I say or do As I take the actions to practice my recovery, my own thoghts and feelings begin to become clearer. I practice speaking them with my sponsor, my recovering friends, and my family Althogh no one likes rejection, I say and do what feels right and tre to me My fear of yor anger determines what I say or do My social circle diminishes as I involve myself with yo more and more Althogh no one likes anger, I say and do what feels right and tre to me. If I need to take steps to keep myself safe, I do this, with the help of others, knowing that my emotional and physical safety are worth protecting I pt my vales aside to connect with yo The qality of my life is in relation to the qality of yors In recovery, I make new friends and let people into my life again In recovery, I re-connect to what s trly important to me and practice my vales in my actions Althogh I care abot yo, the qality of my life is my responsibility and I choose to make it good, regardless of yor choice
