The Implementation of Recovery in Medium Secure Services Maddy Iqbal Deputy Programme Manager Quality Network for Forensic Mental Health Services and Gerard Drennan Head of Psychology Secure and Forensic Service Sussex Partnership NHS trust

Overview The Criterion Network Findings 5 th Annual Report recommendations What the Network has done Challenges identified Highlight of Solutions Examples of Good Practice Summary

The Criterion Quality Network Criterion developed based on CQUIN targets for Medium Secure Services First included in workbooks in Cycle 5 (2010/11) Goal No. 4 (CQUIN) All patients are offered the opportunity to complete a recovery plan. E.g. Recovery Star, WRAP and DREAM.

Network Findings Cycle 5: Percentage of Units who Met This Criterion % of Units Met % of Units Partly Met % of Units Unmet 5% 43% 52%

5th Annual Report Recommendations Recommendation 2: Recovery Plans To ensure that recovery plans are available to service users on all wards. For example: - To identify staff and patient recovery leads - Develop workshops to share learning from the use of the recovery tools What will the Quality Network for Forensic Mental Health Services do? A workshop will be facilitated by the Quality Network in order to support units to share good practice in this area.

The Recovery Workshop A range of presentations discussing good practice, member service initiatives, QIPP and the service user perspective Small group discussions regarding the challenges in implementing recovery tools and possible solutions Feedback, action planning and solution focussed discussions

Challenges Identified Security and risk management Staff attitudes Consistency Confidence in tools Implementation of tools Time and resources Individualised approach Poor role modelling by staff and service users Service user attitudes

Highlight of solutions (1) More service user involvement in developing their own risk assessments & ownership of risk management plans Having service user involvement in staff recruitment and assessing recovery attitudes through the recruitment process Consistency across the care pathway of recovery-orientated paperwork, easily accessible and concise information booklets, consistent treatment goal-setting and risk-reduction goals to enable agency staff to build familiarity and therapeutic relationships on the wards To ensure that training opportunities are provided for both staff and service users regarding the use of recovery tools, with service users as trainers too

Highlight of solutions (2) To ensure that responsibility for recovery-focussed work is multidisciplinary to reduce the burden on one discipline Managing risk and recovery pathway on an individual basis, awareness of the impact of blanket policies and procedures on individualisation of treatment goals New staff to shadow existing recovery champions/role models to engender good practice Having service user recovery champions on wards to provide peer-support and mentoring, success stories to engender hope

Outcomes from the Workshop To produce Implementation of recovery tools leaflet Collection of Recovery Stories describing service user experiences of recovery Please the see the website for details:

Conclusions Many services have had elements of recovery practice for a long time identifying and developing good practice has been an issue New Shared Pathway approach and Secure Pathway requirements likely to have a significant impact in the coming year Involve service users at all points the cornerstone of the culture shift towards collaborative working Thank you to everyone involved during the workshop
