2 Notes about the data in the 2011 GuideStar Directory of Nonprofit Contractors The data in this document comes almost entirely from information filed on the IRS Form 990 by organizations filing for fiscal year We will explain what we mean by almost in due time. The document includes information about more than $34 billion paid by 14,000 IRS recognized tax exempt organizations to more than 13,000 contractors who provided services to these organizations. This report does not, by far, capture all of the economic activity between tax exempt organizations and the contractors who provide them with services. Forms 990 for FY2009 are still being filed at this point in Also, the current rules for filing Form 990 require only that organizations list the top five contractors to which the organizations paid $100,000 or more. Although around 150 of the records included in this report were unnecessarily reported (i.e., contractors under the $100,000 limit, or organizations reporting more than the top five contractors), the overwhelming number of the reported transactions satisfied both of the requirements. These reporting requirements mean that this report is dominated by large nonprofits, many of them healthcare organizations or colleges and universities. Based on the Description of services required on Form 990, we have classified the services into the following categories: Actuarial Services Administrative/Management Services Advertising Services Anesthesia Services Architectural/Engineering Services Back Office Support Services Building, Grounds Maintenance/Cleaning Services Conference/Convention/Special Events Services Construction Consulting Services Financial/Investment Services Food Services Fundraising/Direct Marketing/Campaign Services Healthcare/Employee Benefits Administration HVAC/Plumbing/Electrical Services Insurance Services IT/Software Services Laboratory Testing and Services Legal Services Lobbying Services Marketing/Public Relations/Communications Services Pharmacy Services Physical/Occupational/Speech Therapy Power Line Construction Services Printing/Publication Services Property Management Services Security Services Temporary Staffing Services Transportation Services Tree Services/Right of Way Maintenance The descriptions provided by organizations filing Form 990 are very terse. Particularly opaque are the categories Administrative/Management Services and Consulting Services. Generally, services

3 classified into those categories were described using pretty much those words, leaving us to wonder, for example, what kind of consulting was provided. For the most part, the contractor name and address information is provided as it appears on the Form 990. This is problematic in many cases. None of the five records contains both the correct firm name and address. The challenge of compiling this report is to treat these five records as representing one organization with the correct firm name and address. This necessitates looking the firm up on the Internet to determine the correct information. This was done in cases where a company had more than three entries, but it was not possible to do so with all 25,685 records in the final database. Another example where information has been provided that was not on the Forms 990 as filed is the instance of large national companies with many records in the database. For example, ARAMARK provides many different services all over the country, with many branch offices. In the final database, ARAMARK is represented by 279 records. Before cleaning the data, almost 75 percent appeared on Form 990 with no address, 5 percent appeared with the national headquarters address, and the rest had one of the branch office addresses. The decision was made to populate all of the records in the final report with the national headquarters address in order to avoid discarding three quarters of the records. Similarly, when name changes or mergers were known to have occurred, they have been incorporated. For example, the firms Towers Perrin and Watson Wyatt merged in 2009 to form Towers Watson. That firm name appears on none of the 2009 Forms 990, but that name is used exclusively in this report. Finally, a note about spelling. Spell checking this data is essentially impossible. Many firm names contain surnames, and there appears to be no combination of vowels and consonants that is not a potential surname. Time and again, we would check an unlikely seeming surname on the Internet, only to find it spelled exactly that way. Also, there is apparently nothing that someone will not use for a firm name, nor two or more words that they won t jam together (our personal favorite is IntrapriseTechKnowlogies). Reluctantly, spell checking was abandoned.
