1 Chaplain s Corner September is back to school time. All the first timers will be approaching the unknown with fear and physical upset. Until they experience the kindness of their new teachers and aides, they will be uncomfortable. Until they encounter the new life they can have with their new friends, they will only see the loss. Are we not the same with the future of our dying. We only see the event from this side. We only focus on the pain, the loss and the power of death to devalue us. But we are graced by God with a different view. In creating, God declared our worth by making us in His own image and likeness. That includes imaging His eternal being. God did not make us for death, but for life with Him. In Jesus, our Christ, the Father shows us our real future. If we strive to be divine children by making God s Word our life s treasure and guide, we will be drawn by the Father into life with Him just as Mary was assumed into heaven. We may fear how we will deal with this side of death. But in God s love we should not fear what is awaiting us through the doorway of death. Fr. Michael Grand Knight We have reached the end of summer, Labor day is here! This means Tootsie Roll season is around the corner. You will be getting a call to volunteer to help out. This endeavor is our biggest recognition. We always finish first in the state for amount collected and it is due to the number of council members who volunteer. Faith Fest is coming to Belair on September 16. The car raffle program is ongoing. Several opportunities are presenting themselves for you to volunteer. Not a lot of time is required. Step up and 1 September 2018 help out the causes. SMS fall festival on September We will be offering flu shots again at bingo on September 7th 6-7:30. The social meeting was very poorly attended. The past year several social programs have been very informative and relevant to the membership. If you have an answer to increase attendance let me know. If you have an idea for a social meeting presentation let me know. Tom Rappold is retiring from the bingo program. The team of Tony Grato and Joe Taylor will be taking over. Thanks to Tony and Joe for taking on this program. The budget is attached and will be approved at the September meeting. Next certification for bartenders is August pm. John Knapstein Card Party Several members and their wives play cards on the second Monday of every month at the council home. Contact Dick for information. Dick Kozlowski, We recently learned of the passing of Brother Fred Langhans. He was 92 and living in Eldersburg. He died on February 10, May his soul rest in peace. Also, please do not forget the other deceased fraternal brothers and their family members. Thank you. Alive & Well Let us offer a prayer of thanksgiving to those of us who are in good health. Brothers Helping Brothers. If you need transportation to a doctor s office or hospital, call me. I will make every effort to find transportation for you. Also, if you are available and can provide transportation to a council member or his wife, please let me know. Your help is needed and will be greatly rewarded in heaven. Shirts for Sale Several size large shirts are for sale. They will be on display on meeting nights. Admission Degree Bel Air Council will exemplify the Admission Degree at our September business meeting. At least one candidate is scheduled to take his degree that night. Brothers are urged to wear dark suits or jackets and ties regardless of whether they have a role on the team. Kevin McNamara, PGK Admission Degree Team Co-captain Sick and Deceased Please continue to pray for the following brothers and sisters: Pat Ruckle; Al Kramer; Chuck Duvall; Ray Caralle; Vernon West; Edie Krebs, wife of Brother Ron Krebs; Tony Grato; Pete Kozak; Margie Mack; Gilly Ann McNamara wife, of PGK Kevin McNamara, David Lavin, Tom Krista and our Chaplin, Father Michael Buttner. Please say the Rosary to Our Lady of Perpetual Help for these and any other brothers and sisters who are in poor health. 2 A special invitation to all our Fraternal Brothers, please come and join us in our monthly business and social meetings. Your input is vital to the success of our council and we really need your help and talent to continue and improve our programs. Please remember to bring a canned good to each meeting. Your donation goes directly to Anna s House. Thank you for your support. Financial Secretary It s good not to do evil. But it s evil not to do good. Recently a visiting priest at St Margaret church gave a homily centered on this quote from Pope Francis Angelus of 12 August. Pope Francis frequently reminds us that we are called not just to be good, but also to do good. Please join me in a Fraternal New Year s resolution to increase our presence in our parishes and community. There are many opportunities for our council to do good works. I have reached out to several local causes that would welcome our support. I am in contact with the local

3 Susquehanna region office of Habitat for Humanity, which is a cause that the Knights of Columbus has a history of supporting. They are waiting for me to confirm that I can get at least twenty volunteers, 18+ years old, for a build date. If we cannot muster twenty able bodies, then perhaps we can get some volunteers to participate in the Habitat for Humanity panel build at St Margaret Parish on 13 October. Please contact me if you are interested. Here are some upcoming volunteer opportunities: - Faithfest, 16 September Sign up online to volunteer at faithfest.membershiptoolkit.com - Make rosaries for Faithfest 1:30 3:30 on Thursdays at St Margaret parish office - St Margaret Fall Festival, September Stand by for details I have information on many other volunteer opportunities. Perhaps you have a particular cause that you would like our council to support. Please contact me or one of our council officers if you would like to do some good. Mark Zimmerman, Financial Secretary, intrepid21122@yahoo.com, cell/text Fraternal Benefits The Value of Membership Referrals As a professional insurance agent, one of the things I appreciate most is when one of my brother Knight clients or his wife refers another member to me. This is a great endorsement of the service I provided. It tells me that they were so pleased with what I helped them accomplish that they want me to help others achieve the same level of financial safety and security. When I meet with you, please pass along the names of those who might be able to benefit from the analysis that I provide. Similarly, there is no stronger membership recruiting tool than the referral. How many of us know an eligible Catholic male who is not a member of the Knights of Columbus? Do you have Catholic family or friends, local or not, who have yet to join? Most likely, they ve never been asked and don t know enough about the Order to seek out membership on their own. If you have names of potential members, please pass them along to me or your Grand Knight. Let us know if we can use your name when we contact the gentlemen in question. It s always more effective to tell a candidate for membership that he was recommended by a current member, especially someone he knows. Don t worry if the candidate is outside the area I serve or beyond the district of the local councils, we can make sure we put these future members in touch with the right people in their communities. New members are the lifeblood of the Order. All the good deeds done by the Order are driven by the members. Over the past decade, Knights have given more than $1.5 billion to charity and provided in excess of 670 million hours of service. And our membership has merely scratched the surface in North America. Imagine the potential. Edward A. O Keefe, CLU, ChfC, Edward.okeefe@kofc.org Community Activities Alzheimer Association Walk Bel Air Council is joining with other councils in District 16 to raise funds for Alzheimer Association. Many of us have been affected in one way or another by family dealing with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. This is another way we can join together as Knights to support life. The walk at Ripken Stadium is on October 6 - Columbus Day weekend. You can join the team or donate by going to the following website: GreaterMaryland?team_id=462098&pg=team&fr_id =11272 Dick Belmonte 3

4 Perry Point Program The Bel Air Council will be assisting patients at Perry Point on the first Sundays of the month. We will once again be looking for help on the first Sunday of September (2nd) for our turn to aid the patients at Perry Point. If you would like to join us, we leave from the McDonalds on 543 in Riverside at 9:30 AM, or you may want to join us at the Chapel in Perry Point at 10:00 AM. Mass is at 10:30 AM. After returning the patients to their various buildings, we usually return to Riverside by noon. If you are unable to help with patients, you are very welcome to join us at Mass. If you want more information call Tom Sutera at (410) or Pat Dolan at (410) Our thanks to all of our members, wives, and friends that help us aid our veterans each month. God Bless All of You. Tom Sutera Church Activities St. Mark will hold its Christmas blood drive on Thursday, December 13 in the White Hall Building. Youth Activities This year the council will be hosting dinners for the Altar Servers and their families at St. Mark on November 17 and St. Margaret on December 8. Additional information will be forthcoming. We are (temporarily) exchanging cards for crafts on Card Night. In August we learned how to make Rosaries and earrings. While that might sound like an unusual combination, this is in preparation for the Christmas season. Anyone who would like to learn to make a chain link rosary or earrings be sure to come to our next Card/Craft Night on September 10th - at 7Pm at the Council Home. We will provide all the materials. All you need to bring is yourself and your enthusiasm. Our Birthday Lady for September is Virginia Berkowitz 9/19 Wedding Anniversary Couple for September is Sharon & Guy DiMAtteo -9/3/1960 September Saint of the Month are Arch Angels Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel. Our Color for the Month is White. Our last Summer meeting will be September 13th at the Council Home (Newport Room) at 12:30. Pack your lunch, mark your calendars and join us. The photo below shows CLSO members and Friends of CLSO conducting a Bingo for the Veterans at Perry Point. We had a great time with a record number of Vets attending. The Vets have come to know us and call for us to sit with them. They always want to know when we are coming back. Now that is really gratifying. We bring treats and prizes for the winners (but no one loses because no one goes back to his or her room empty handed) and we always leave wondering who had more fun us or the Vets? Respectfully submitted, Dolores (Dee) Kozlowski, President Catholic Ladies Service Organization Catholic Ladies Service Organization Hi Everybody! School is back in session and summer will be officially over very soon, but we have been having some real great summer time activities. Our Brown Bag Lunch Meetings have been a lot of fun and well attended. Our CLSO Annual Birthday Party was held on August 12 at Mammie s Restaurant with eleven members present. We had a great time with good food and fellowship. CLSO members and Friends of CLSO conducting a Bingo for the Veterans at Perry Point. 4
