1 LOTHIAN SEXUAL HEALTH SNAPSHOT NHS Healthy Respect Lothian & Partners Edition 34, February 2013 ======================================= CELEBRATING SUCCESS Wellbeing In Sexual Health & HIV (WISHH) Awards Nominations are open The WISHH awards aim to promote and celebrate the success of sexual health and HIV projects and initiatives around the country. WISHH awards are open to anyone in the East of Scotland who works in a health board, local authority or the voluntary sector. There are two awards available for projects and initiatives that link to any of the outcomes in the Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Framework. Nominations can be specifically focused on sexual health improvement or projects delivered as part of a wider service. The awards this year will be presented at the East of Scotland regional event on 18 th March. To nominate a project, service or organisation, please Catriona.young1@nhs.net to request a nomination form. Closing date: Wednesday 6 th March NEWS SUMMARY LGBT History Month LGBT History Month takes place in Scotland every February. It is an opportunity to celebrate LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) lives and culture by exploring our own and others histories in an LGBT context. LGBT History Month is for everyone; individuals, community groups, organisations, service providers, LGBT and non-lgbt people. LGBT History Month Scotland is a project delivered by LGBT Youth Scotland. To find out more about the work that LGBT Youth Scotland does to support young LGBT people, visit Informal Consultation Young People and accessing sexual health services Healthy Respect is seeking the views of young people on why they do or don t access sexual health services. We are particularly interested in the views of young people who are less likely to attend a service, and who may be more vulnerable to poor sexual health outcomes. If you are working with young people who you think fall into this category, and would be willing to support them to complete a short questionnaire, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Lesley.x.walker@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk for more information. Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2012 published The Chief Statistician has published the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) is the Scottish Government's official tool for identifying those places in Scotland suffering from deprivation. It incorporates several different aspects of deprivation, combining them into a single index. Changes to Healthy Respect Networks Healthy Respect is making some changes to its networks. We are bringing together the Targeted Sex and Relationships Support (TSRS) and Services networks into one new network named Healthy Respect Practitioners Network. This new network is for practitioners working with young people and has a focus on sexual health and wellbeing. The network aims to support staff working directly or indirectly with young people by raising awareness of good practice, new resources, training opportunities, research findings and child protection and basic clinical updates. We hope members will benefit from being part of a wider network and find improved opportunities for partnership working.
2 Healthy Respect now facilitates 3 Lothian-wide networks: Partners Network: This network is for service providers and managers working within the sexual health and wellbeing field. There is an annual event in December each year. Practitioners Network: This network is for practitioners working with young people and has a focus on sexual health and wellbeing. There are network events twice a year. These are offered both for West Lothian practitioners and for those working in Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian. Learning Disabilities Network: This network is for individuals and organisations working with young people with learning disabilities, with a focus on to sexual health-related topics. Members are encouraged to showcase and share their work at these network events. As a member of any of the Healthy Respect networks you will receive a quarterly e-newsletter from Healthy Respect and an invitation to network events. Additionally you will receive a copy of Network News relevant to your network, which is distributed electronically after network events. We will be writing to members of the previous networks shortly with more details. In the meantime existing members do not need to take any action membership of the new Practitioners Network will be automatic for those already in the TSRS and Services networks. The next Practitioners Network event will take place in April If you are interested in joining any Healthy Respect network, please contact Leanne Rockingham at leanne.rockingham@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk FOCUS ON INFORMATION New NSPCC Campaign Don t wait until you re certain A new campaign to increase awareness of a helpline for people who are concerned about a child but don t know where to turn for help was launched in January. In 2011, 1,475 people across Scotland contacted the NSPCC worried about a child. Of these 46 percent were responded to with advice, support, and signposting, 54 percent resulted in a referral to social work services or the police. Visit or to order leaflets, wallet cards or posters contact NSPCC Publications on or publications@nspcc.org.uk Additionally, the NSPCC has launched a series of shot animated films dealing with the subject of sexual exploitation. The films, which are designed to be used with young people who have been sexually exploited or who are vulnerable to this form of abuse, look at a number of different issues related to exploitation and offer starting points for discussion. Visit for more information. New translations for Chlamydia and Vaginal Health leaflets The NHS Health Scotland publications on Chlamydia and Vaginal Health in Romanian are available from the Health Scotland website for download. Please visit to download these resources. Healthy Respect Website Development A new Training and Development portal is now available on the Healthy Respect Website for professionals. This resource has been developed to support the Healthy Respect Network by listing current sexual health and wellbeing training opportunities across Lothian (with a focus on young people). We hope that this will be a useful point of information for all professionals working in the sexual health field and we encourage you to send details of courses to help promote your training activities. If you would like to add details of any training courses to the website, please send them directly to Leanne Rockingham at leanne.rockingham@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk

Primary Care Clinical guidance on the detection and management of Sexually Transmitted Infection for use in primary care in Lothian has been produced locally by sexual health and laboratory staff in collaboration with GPs.
