9 Turpin Communication Website Turpin threw out the rule book on training executives in public speaking. Instead of imposing a template of forced mannerisms, their credo is Be yourself, only better. To that end, Substance developed a site that focused on the unique personalities of executives in their audience groups. The personality types appear in the navigation rollover, with accompanying descriptions behavior descriptions for each. 9
10 AIDS Run and Walk Chicago, 2010 Print Substance partnered with AIDS Foundation of Chicago to brand the AIDS Run & Walk Chicago. We developed the theme I live. I give. I move. This conveys the three step process of awareness, action and participation. The spectrum visually references the rainbow flag and provides impact to the campaign, as well as contrast to the black and white photography. The campaign was applied to train and bus signage, posters, brochures and promotional items throughout Chicago. 10

12 Thresholds - Visual Identity - Brand Repositioning - Website Design Thresholds provides housing and social services to people suffering from mental illness. We developed the visual identity based on the positioning statement Home, Health, Hope. This establishes the connection between safe and stable housing, recovery, and a more positive future. Helping people with mental illness is very much an adjunct of healthcare and it was critical that the visual identity represent this connection. 12

They needed a brand positiong and name that more overtly spoke to their role in establishing housing as a foundational element in healthcare. Substance developed the new name Alexian Brothers Housing and Heatlh Alliance and the tagline find your place. As part of a comprehensive identity system, we designed a a donor outreach kit to appeal to donors, as well as a suite of facility brochures for prospective residents. A website and advertising campaign was developed as well to support the brand.
22 I never had my own place before. I was homeless half my life. I learned i was worth saving. There was some good in me. It s the most wonderful thing to know. - Marshall Every individual has a place. A place to reconnect, regain health, and recover. A place to call home. Our best and hardest work is still ahead of us. I knew i had to get help. In my every fiber I knew there was more to life than what i was living. What I have received here is priceless. people care about me here. i can start anew and don t have to walk on eggshells to do so. At alexian brothers health system, we believe that all individuals are created in God s image and deserve to be treated with respect. Every individual has a place and every individual has the right to be cared for in society. It s that unwavering philosophy that guides every aspect of the Alexian Brothers mission. For over 800 years Alexian Brothers has been on the front lines of caregiving, providing for the marginalized of society. We treated victims of the plague in 12th century Europe, sent caregivers to battlefield hospitals in times of warfare, and ministered to victims of cholera in Chicago. Today, Alexian Brothers Housing and Health Alliance provides health care and stable housing for individuals impacted by HIV/ AIDS and other chronic diseases. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life within a supportive community. We take a comprehensive approach to ensuring a successful transition for this often overlooked population, to promote healing of the whole person; body, mind, and spirit. This approach begins with housing, the cornerstone of health care and an integral part of Alexian Brothers Health System. Stable housing provides a foundation for people to get a fresh start. It provides place to receive counseling, care, and to reconnect with family. It s a place to be part of a supportive community that offers comprehensive services. As we have throughout our history, we go where the need is greatest. Despite our years of progress, that need remains significant in Chicago and Lake County. Chronic diseases and homelessness are intricately related. The National Alliance to End Homelessness estimates that half of the 22,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Chicago will experience homelessness at some point in their lives. With only 1,300 units of housing units available to those in need, there is still so much that needs to be done. In Lake County, there are an estimated 262 homeless individuals living with HIV/AIDS. These figures are unacceptable. AIDS in America may no longer be the front-page issue that it has been in the past, but the need to provide care is as important as ever. It is central to the mission and values of Alexian Brothers that everyone should have access to quality compassionate and holistic care, regardless of their ability to pay. This is why support is critical. All of the programs and services provided by Alexian Brothers Housing and Health Alliance are provided at little to no charge to our clients. Given the increasing demands and constraints on reduced government funding, philanthropic support is more important than ever. Alexian brothers has always been here. with your help, we will continue to be here for the future. - patricia It s a place to call home. compassion An empathy matched only by our energy. It was a start to get closer to God. it taught me how to take care of myself. I love being around staff, residents and case managers every day. it keeps me grounded. - Darrell Supportive environments, Successful transitions. When we opened our doors in 1989, the world was a very different place. A diagnosis was seen as a death sentence. Because the disease was new and stigmatized, friends and family abandoned many people living with HIV/AIDS, leaving them without care. People had literally nowhere else to go. During this time when many institutions were questioning their positions on HIV/AIDS, the Alexian Brothers forged ahead to promote care instead of debate. After initially opening their own homes to provide care, the Brothers raised funds to create a permanent residence. Because of their efforts, a vacant convent in Chicago s Lakeview neighborhood was transformed and in March 1989, the first residents moved into Bonaventure House. Our first housing site was a reality. Since that time, we have welcomed over 1,400 people through our doors and offered supportive services programming to nearly 250 clients a year. The impact of stable housing on quality of health is unquestioned. Those placed in housing with case management had improved immune systems after 18 months. This not only impacts their lives, it impacts the lives of other members of the community. Research has shown that stable housing and treatment dramatically reduce HIV transmission rates, therefore creating safe and healthier communities. Housing Sites Alexian Brothers Housing and Health Alliance provides a continuum of client-centered housing services. We provide three sites throughout the Chicagoland region that support over 100 clients each year. Each site offers holistic, comprehensive services including case management, recovery support, occupational therapy, spiritual care and after care. Bonaventure House on the north side and The Harbor in Lake County both provide sobriety-based programs that assist those living with HIV who are looking to maintain recovery from addiction. Bettendorf Place, on the south side, provides housing to people with chronic diseases who may be struggling with active substance use and require a harm reduction approach to achieving sobriety. Alexian Brothers Housing and Health Alliance also provides an additional 74 subsidized apartment units scattered throughout Chicago and Lake County to those individuals who need an additional stepping stone to independence. All clients residing in these Community Housing units have a chronic disease, some who are HIV-positive, and receive intensive case management to assist them in stabilizing their health and increasing their tenancy skills. Our programs are focused on treating the whole individual, through a holistic range of services focused on recovery and support. These include the following: Comprehensive Case Management Offers individualized service and recovery plans. Residents also receive linkage to medical care, pharmaceutical assistance, public benefits, outside mental health services, additional recovery support, vocational assistance, and other community services. Occupational Therapy Helps residents to develop strategies to overcome barriers towards independent living, in order to achieve their own goals for a fulfilling and purposeful lifestyle. This program also provides support and financial assistance for individuals to obtain their GED or attend college. Substance Use/Recovery Services Provides a continuum of substance use recovery models, including sobriety-based and harm-reduction programs. Bonaventure House and The Harbor assist residents in recovery from drug and alcohol addictions by maintaining a drug and alcohol free transitional living environment. Bettendorf Place and Community Housing work to meet clients where they are along the spectrum of recovery. We maintain the philosophy that all positive change is good and we tailor our programs to meet the pace of the client s recovery goals. Our Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADCs) offer individual and group recovery support sessions, including risk reduction, relapse prevention, and sobriety maintenance. Spiritual Care Provides opportunities for spiritual healing, growth and guidance, including meditation groups, prayer services for various faiths, spiritual retreats and referrals to community religious resources. The spiritual care program welcomes all residents, regardless of religion, to pursue their spiritual path. Alexian Brothers Housing and Health Alliance - Donor Outreach Brochure 22

28 the (un)common good beginning fall Illinois Humanities Council Winter Program Print The Illinois Humanities Council promotes involvement in and appreciate for the humanities in Illinois, through event programming throughout the year. Substance partnered with them on their winter program, The UnCommon Good. The premise of the program series is to address our increasingly polarized national dialogue. The poster we designed to promote this series uses overlaying type to represent the cacophony of voices. The four questions are the title of each program, and the net effect suggests redistricting or dividing of the principles being discussed.

FOSTER THE FAMILY MEAL? WELLNESS PROGRAMS Over the last three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled. Today, one in every three kids in our nation is overweight or obese. With influential grants awarded to Parkways from the Abbott Fund and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, the Chicago Park District created six Wellness Centers providing 600 kids with intensive after school programming as part of a city-wide effort to help combat childhood obesity and the health issues that result from it. The Wellness Centers are housed in Chicago Park District field houses and provide the community with multifaceted, year-round nutrition and fitness programming. This includes fitness classes, fitness arcading and interactive fitness equipment such as the popular games Dance, Dance Revolution and Game Bikes, as well as inflatable equipment, rock climbing walls, ballroom dance classes and a walking club. Additionally, families learn healthy nutrition through interactive cooking demonstrations, healthy snacks and meal lesson plans. Registered dietitians offer instruction on healthy cooking, staying fit as a family and promoting healthy lifestyles. KRAFT GREAT KIDS PROGRAM Parkways receives a generous grant from Kraft Foods Foundation enabling the Chicago Park District to offer year-round programming that promotes healthy lifestyles in 12 parks through fitness, nutrition, creativity and literacy. The 3,500 youth in the Kraft Great Kids Program receive homework help as well as participate in fitness, gardening, arts and reading activities that are integrated into an engaging and fun curriculum, while being mentored by caring adults in a positive environment. This initiative is influencing the way after-school and summer programming is implemented throughout the Park District. JUNIOR BEAR FOOTBALL PROGRAM The intramural Junior Bear program gives 750 Chicago-area children ages 7-13 from 17 citywide parks the opportunity to play football in an organized league for free. The season culminates in the Mum Bowl championship at Soldier Field. During half-time at the Mum Bowl, one Junior Bear receives the Walter Payton Award that honors a player who not only exercises good sportsmanship, but is also an asset to his community. Conner Cloherty from Dunham Park received this award in Parkways and the Chicago Park District partner with Bears Care, the charitable beneficiary of the Chicago Bears, to provide the Junior Bear football program. INNER CITY YOUTH BASEBALL PROGRAM This free program is the anchor of the Chicago Park District s largest initiative to provide Chicago s youth and teens with safe, structured sports programming during the summer months. The league consists of 32 local park teams, providing 480 kids ages 9-12 the opportunity to participate each year. From the 32 local park teams, three All Star teams are chosen to represent the league at a competition held at Little Cubs Field in Humboldt Park. Teams located on the City s north and west sides represent the National League and teams on the south side represent the American League. In 2010, The American League defeated the National League 7-6, walking away with the coveted All Star title. Cubs Care, Chicago White Sox Charities and the McCormick Tribune Foundation support the Inner City Youth Baseball Program. THE POWER TO expand horizons 2010 ANNUAL REPORT THE POWER OF THE PARKS CAN A PARK EXPAND YOUR WORLDVIEW? CAN A PARK OPEN NEW DOORS? HELP YOU (RE)DISCOVER YOURSELF? ALVIN AILEY DANCE CAMP AileyCamp Chicago is a six week camp with a curriculum based on the mission to develop self-confidence, creative expression and critical thinking skills in young people ages through the art form of dance. In the tradition of famed choreographer, Alvin Ailey, AileyCamp teaches that self-empowerment can be achieved through the discipline of one s own body. The intensive summer experience concluded with a final performance by the 80 participants that was attended by nearly 700 people. In 2010, JPMorgan Chase joined Parkways in providing support for AileyCamp Chicago. ADAPTIVE CAMPS FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES Parkways launched the adaptive camp sports program in 2007 with one camp at Columbus Park that had 20 participants. In 2010, with the generosity and support from Variety of Illinois, 126 youth and adults took part in four camps at Mann, Norwood, Chase and Davis Square parks. The campers socialized with their peers and participated in activities such as kayaking, swimming, fishing and tandem and adaptive cycling. In addition, with support from the Leo S. Guthman Fund and the Carl Forstmann Memorial Foundation, the Adaptive Theatre Program at Marquette and Welles parks has grown from a classs where participants learned and presented a reading of an existing script to a dynamic participatory program where the students create their own scripts and costumes and memorize their lines and stage movements. Dance helps me deal with life and it helps me with my anger issues. It gives me something to focus on. I m a foster kid and sometimes my life is really hard and scary but now I dance and I am going to school for dance at ChiArts. RAHEEN, AILEY CAMPER, CHIARTS SOPHOMORE Parkways Foundation Print Parkways Foundation invests in Chicago s parks to enrich the community. They offer programs and services that promote wellness, education, neighborhood revitalization and the environment. We developed the positioning the power of the parks to speak to how parks benefit families, neighborhoods, and communities. This complete brand repositioning effort included comprehensive market research, annual report, direct mail, events programming, advertising, and web design and development. 30
