1 President s Preface It is hard to believe it is November already. Where has the year gone? However, with the weather so poor one has to wonder where summer is hiding. Global warming certainly has a part to play evidenced by the images we have seen on the news showing snow levels often not experienced in the winter in the South Island. I am ever hopeful after each southerly storm it will improve. This past weekend I travelled to the Wairarapa to take part in a Garden Trail Tour on both Saturday & Sunday. This is something the family booked some time ago and I am looking forward to experiencing some of the best gardens in that area. Dorothy Lomas funeral Service was a wonderful tribute to her A big thank you to those who were able to attend. I have only known Dorothy since joining the club so it was a pleasure to listen to each of the eulogies and learn more about her life and contributions. She was a very valued member of our club and District. The club felt privileged to have been invited to participate in the proceedings. We have some exciting events coming up beginning with our November Christmas Meeting, in December Christmas in the Atrium and our traditional get together with drinks and finger food at the Borough. Check out the list of events and diary these dates now. Spring into Tawa was a great success, even though the weather didn t play ball. It s wonderful to be part of the Vibrant Tawa Community. A huge thank you to all the wonderful businesses who continue to be so generous and supportive of all that Inner Wheel Tawa do. The District Meeting was held on Saturday 10 November. I was unable to attend so Di Patchett along with Sue O Sullivan attended as our delegates. Celebrating 125 years of Women s suffrage was the theme. I am looking forward to welcoming members, husbands, family and friends at the November meeting. 2 October Meeting Look after your Heart. Kathy Lyders role is that of Heart Health Advocate in the lower North Island region. There are 16 individuals employed in this role across the country. The main function is to support those with Heart Disease through face to face contact, seminars, expos, material resources and information on local notice boards - a strategy designed to assist with prevention and rehabilitation. This is a change from the Heart Foundations traditional purpose which was that of fundraising. The Foundation s vision is Hearts for Life which sets direction to include funding and supporting research about heart disease and its cause through the provision of $2 million for fellowships and investigation. At the moment research is being undertaken to determine the impact of anxiety and depression on heart problems. The Stent now a common medical intervention for heart disease was discovered through one such fellowship. Work in schools is another key prevention method facilitated by the Foundation. Reading food labels and developing good knowledge about appropriate diet has been concepts taught recently, particularly in lower decile schools. The food and hospitality industry does not miss out either, with emphasis on and understanding the need to reduce salt and sugar content in foods. The foundation is also committed to improving people s knowledge about and reaction to heart attacks. Did you Know? Your heart pumps 70 millilitres of blood every beat. 3 Spring into Tawa Although bad weather hampered this event we were able to raise $ from our raffle and promote the club and organisation. Gabrielle s globe with lolly pops attracted the children who had parents who then bought a raffle. Great strategy!! Thanks to those who helped out on the day particularly Liz for her wonderful raffle selling ability. Raffle baskets Gabrielle s lollypop globe Liz and Mary manning the Inner Wheel Table. Dorothy Lomas 15 August October 2018 It is with much sadness we say farewell to our member Dorothy Lomas who passed away on the 15 th August aged 76. We are aware that Dorothy has been courageous and stoic over these past three years coping with so much illness. However, she continued to remain interested in the world and was always up for a good debate. This was evidenced recently when she shared excitement about her 21 year old grandson coming to live with her and Ray, while attending university. She enjoyed very much his willingness to engage in some good conversation. RIP Dorothy Dorothy was President of Tawa on two occasions 1994 and 2006 and elected as District Chairman in 2003/2004. Each district was required to have a sales table for the 2006 International Inner Wheel Convention in Christchurch which Dorothy organised with her usual high level of efficiency offering attendees a range of NZ made products. The responsibility to organise our 25 th and 30 th birthday celebrations was taken up by Dorothy leaving detailed minutes and an organisational structure used by those planning our 35 th celebrations in March Dorothy was as an employee of the Police Force. Following the Christchurch Earthquake she was stationed in Christchurch to manage some of the aftermath Police work. Her expertise in organisation, efficiency and attention to detail was recognised by the Police when being awarded a prestigious award for her work in this most difficult situation.

4 The District meeting on 10 th November was held in khandallah with the theme Women s Suffrage and was hosted by the Inner Wheel Club of Wellington. Guest speaker Dr Anne Else spoke about the update of a book which had been published in 1993 marking 100 years of Women s Suffrage Women Together: A history of Women s organisations in NZ. The modernising of this book is being undertaken by Dr Else and will be available on line. This review of the original publication will celebrate 125 years of Women s Suffrage. District Chairman Marie was honest in her report asking what is the future of Inner Wheel and what will it look like? We have lost 200 members over the past few years and although some of that loss is through aging there is no longer the replacement of these members. She reminded us that increasing membership was everyone s responsibility and to ensure sustainability we need people to pick up leadership roles this is part of the giving back to the organisation which we belong. Inner Wheel New Zealand President Darlene reminded us all to ensure our values are at the forefront and be prepared to do things differently take a risk. She encouraged members to attend the conference in Auckland sharing some of the items in the programme which are planned to motivate and encourage. Inner Wheel NZ have set a challenge to increase membership 1 new member per club per year doesn t sound much but would begin to make a huge difference. In the afternoon Eunice spoke about the Ruel Foundation and its beginnings. Give a smile for those who can t We learnt not only does the foundation support the operation of cleft palates but deals with adoption and fostering and Spring onto Tawa flyer from the facebook page. The District donated $ towards this work of which $ was donated by Tawa. The meeting finished with a very moving tribute to those who lost their lives in World War 1. Attendees were asked to stand while the last post was played followed by the reading of The Fallen They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. 5 The planning for this event is going well to date with 3 tables confirmed and assistance offered by the Salvation Army.
