2 2004 The Older Adult Committee was formed to represent Older Adults on the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Mental Health Planning Council including representation from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging A statewide Pennsylvania adult and older adult suicide prevention workgroup was formed from this Committee with participants from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services HGB1

4 a Suicide Prevention Strategy was developed to specifically address issues of older adults The workgroup and other advocates The workgroup and other advocates developed a five year action plan based on the goals and objectives of the Pennsylvania suicide prevention plan

5 Successes include: Presented suicide prevention as a special topic - Mental Health and Aging forums - Spring 2006 Sponsored statewide conferences on suicide and suicide prevention using national speakers First Annual Suicide Prevention Conference Two Day Suicide Prevention Conference HGB2

7 Transforming public attitudes to view mental and substance use disorders as real illnesses, equal to physical illness, that respond to specific treatments and to view persons who obtain treatment as pursuing basic health care Developed Individualized Fact Sheets to address specific needs and to be used at a variety of events to educate and bridge issues of stigma

8 Increasing the proportion of local communities with comprehensive suicide prevention plans providing outreach and support to counties Disseminating information through the internet The PA State Suicide Prevention Plans are posted on websites, including PA Recovery and PA Department of Aging Fact sheets can be printed off the internet sites Organizations and state departments can list the Pennsylvania State Suicide Prevention Plan as a resource Ongoing dissemination information through the internet by the OMHSAS, Department of Aging/ g Office of Long Term Living and the PA Behavioral Health and Aging Coalition HGB3

10 Organized a State interagency committee to improve coordination and to ensure implementation of the Pennsylvania Strategy Meets quarterly The Committee received training this year by SPRC Increasing the number of evidence-based suicide prevention plans in the community Subcommittee of the Older Adult Committee was formed to address depression and suicide in primary care E l i h b fi f h l h i l Exploring the benefits for health insurance plans to cover mental health and substance abuse care on par with coverage for physical health care
