2 Dear Candidate Thank you for considering an application to join us in helping to change thousands of young lives! We are looking to recruit our next Director of Grant Making and Policy - a leadership role with responsibility for the 2,000+ grants that we make each year that have a huge impact on the lives of children throughout the UK. Leading a UK wide team you will be able to make a big difference. In 2015, we made 51 million of grants and we manage many millions of pounds worth of grants big and small right across the UK all year round. We support long term, short term and crisis needs that children and young people experience and we run proactive partnerships to amplify and share our learning. We support amazing projects and people working with children and young people living with disadvantage to have a better future. Last year our funding helped change the lives of nearly half a million children through our responsive grant making programmes alone. We also supported 18,000 children in crisis, through our partnership with Buttle UK. We will need your energy and enthusiasm to keep a lot of plates spinning: You ll manage our portfolio of grants across the UK, ensuring quality and fairness and managing risk, but also responding to emergency grant-making programmes, where every second counts. And you will lead on the promotion of a learning culture across the organisation, ensuring first-class analysis informs our grant making and that we have a comprehensive knowledge base on social issues and policies which affect children and young people across the UK. Under your guidance we will enrich policy development, champion good practice and influence thinking more widely. BBC Children in Need And the cumulative effect of our proactive programmes like Fun and Friendship, meant more and more schools adopted our learning materials to support disabled children. You will provide strong strategic leadership, as a member of the Charity s Strategic Directors Group reporting directly into the Chief Executive of BBC Children in Need. And your influence will be far-reaching, as you inspire and engage staff and other key stakeholders throughout the BBC and beyond.

3 About BBC Children in Need The story so far Our Projects We use the money we raise to support projects working with disadvantaged children and young people right here in the UK. We currently fund approximately 2,500 projects to a value of 120m, across every corner of the UK, from the Shetland Islands to Cornwall. Our Impact Our Vision Our vision is that every child in the UK has a childhood which is: Safe Happy and secure Allows them to reach their potential Our work has helped us identify seven important features - we call them building blocks - that we believe all children and young people need. For many children in the UK, these building blocks are threatened or weakened by the disadvantages they experience, such as living in poverty, being disabled or experiencing abuse, trauma or loss. We fund organisations who address these disadvantages by either working directly with children or seeking to improve their social and physical environments.

5 Our Grant-making Grants Programmes Small grants up to 10,000 for 1 year Main grants Over 10,000 for up to three years Emergency Essentials Providing items that meet the most basic needs of individual children living in severe poverty Proactive grants and programmes Identifying unmet needs, learning about emerging or under-researched issues We have 3 main mechanisms for making a difference through our grantmaking... Responsive grant-making: Outcomes-driven funding: making a difference in children s lives Not-for-profit organisations identify a need amongst children and young people, and apply online for grants to work with them to strengthen the building blocks that will enable them to have a safe, happy and secure childhood, and give them the chance to reach their potential. Small grants - any amount up to and including 10,000 for one year at a time Small amount of money can make a big difference Summer play-schemes for children who won t get a summer holiday Toy libraries providing a range of safe, stimulating toys to children with learning disabilities Breakfast clubs for children who might not get a meal until lunchtime Main Grants - over 10,000 usually not more than 120,000 for up to three years More complex projects, or a bigger scale Counselling for children who ve lost a parent Projects tackling Child Sexual Exploitation Youth Clubs giving 100s of young people positive activities Emergency Grants: Emergency Essentials - basic items we take for granted e.g. warm winter coat, beds to sleep in or a cooker to give a hot meal Emergency Essentials supports individual children and young people living with severe poverty, a lack of the basic facilities which most of us take for granted and additional pressures such as domestic violence, disability or poor health in the family The programme provides items that meet children s most basic needs such as a bed to sleep in, a cooker to give them a hot meal, clothing (in a crisis) and other items and services that are critical to children s wellbeing The programme is administered by Buttle UK which, through its network of frontline partner agencies, is able to reach families who need the programme most Proactive grant-making: Strategic funding - identifying unmet needs, learning about emerging or under-researched issues Targeted grants or programmes where we identify a specific need e.g. Fun & Friendship - talked to disabled teenagers who identified that they simply wanted opportunities to socialise as independently as possible, like their peers. So we set up a programme exploring how best to support them to do that.

7 Making a difference in your area IMPACT Theatre Company - Ealing A grant of 51,800 enables IMPACT Theatre to deliver a creative arts project to children with learning disabilities in the West London community. Activities include West African drumming, dance, drama, art, pottery, film-making, puppetry and animation workshops. In addition, the project offers sessions involving severely disabled children to create music using invisible light-beams and switches. Children with learning disabilities can feel isolated and often struggle at school, which can leave long-lasting effects of self-esteem. IMPACT Theatre aims to inspire the young people, whilst raising their self-confidence and selfesteem. Leatherhead Youth Project Limited A grant of 37,500 supports the Leatherhead Youth Project to engage disadvantaged young people from the area and provide practical support in order to improve the young people s self-esteem and confidence, whilst helping them gain qualifications and enhancing their resilience. The young people of Leatherhead Youth Project work with reside in Leatherhead North, one of the most deprived wards in Surrey. The social issues the young people face include living in poverty and low educational achievement, resulting in low aspirations and a high risk of becoming NEET. This project goes on to help young people in the area reach their potential.

8 Connor s Story Who we help Tyler s Story I m Connor. I m 10, and I live with my mum and three brothers in North Wales. Erin s Story My dad, Gordon, was a butcher. Everybody in Wrexham knew him. He loved making people laugh. When I was three he got blood poisoning and lost his leg, but that didn t stop him. He became a taxi driver instead. Three years ago he got cancer and became very sick. At first he stayed home, but then he became very ill and had to stay at Nightingale Hospice for a while. He just got more and more poorly, and died on my birthday in November last year. Because I was upset my mum took me to see Diane, a social worker at Nightingale House. Money from BBC Children in Need helps Diane to do her job. The first time I went there we played puppets and made volcanoes which are really cool. I took in some photos of dad and me, and a keyring he gave me, and we put them in a memory box. I hope other children who lose someone have a Diane they can talk to. A grant of 90,000 helps Nightingale House Hospice support bereaved children and young people like Connor. As a child, Erin was a keen gymnast regularly competing at events, but at 8 years old she was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Erin now faces near-constant pain from the condition as the bones and cartilage in her joints have worn away in many places. Almost all of her joints are affected and her condition is unlikely to improve. When she was 15, Erin joined Arthritis Care Scotland s Joint Potential Project where she found practical advice, a supportive group of friends and a space where she could learn how to thrive despite the physical limitations caused by her arthritis. The organisation has been pivotal in helping Erin find ways to cope with her condition and regain her confidence. What s more, Erin has since become a volunteer on the Arthritis Care Scotland Take Control project, where she works with young people aged 10 to 18 on workshops that deal with pain management, living successfully with the condition, improving sleep and arts workshops. A grant of 69,000 helps Arthritis Care support young people like Erin through emotional support, self-management workshops and access to new activities. Dylan s brother Tyler died from a life limiting condition when he was just three. He had seemed to be a healthy child so his prognosis was a shock to the whole family. It was particularly difficult for Dylan to understand. In Tyler s last months he and his family were helped by life affirming music therapy at Thomas s Fund. A grant from BBC Children in Need pays for Andy, a mobile music therapist, who visits children at home when they are no longer able to travel without great difficulty. Bringing music into Tyler s life not only gave Tyler joy but it also gave the family wonderful memories of being together in a positive way even at the darkest of times. After Tyler passed away, Andy went above and beyond his duties by giving his brother Dylan music therapy sessions to help with his grief. Dylan and Andy have a special bond which has comforted the whole family. Tyler is at the heart of Dylan s music therapy as Dylan always brings his photo in so that he can be a part of the session. A grant of 73,000 from BBC Children in Need helps Thomas s Fund provide music therapy sessions for children like Tyler and Dylan.

9 Our fundraising Since our first major Appeal in 1980 BBC Children in Need has raised over 800 million, all of which has gone to help disadvantaged children and young people around the UK. BBC Children in Need works year round, with a fundraising crescendo every November. The Annual Appeal sees people from every corner of the UK coming together to do amazing things to help change young lives.
