1 HOBBYISTS GENERAL MEETING MINUTES November 3, 2016 Jim Sutherland called the meeting to order at 10:01 a.m. Of?icers Attending: Jim Sutherland (President), Syd Robertson (1 st VP), John Pensec (Treas.), and Joe Shannon (Sect.) Bob Paoli led the Pledge of Allegiance. Announcements: Jim Sutherland Jim Sutherland reminded everyone the December meeting, like today s, will begin at 9 a.m. We will then go on the winter schedule in January, with meetings beginning at noon. The traditional Hobbyists Sunday service at First Presbyterian will be celebrated on Nov. 13 at 10:00 a.m. All Hobbyists are invited to attend. You can pick up your 50 th Anniversary mug and booklet if you haven t already done so. Arne Olsen needs some help preparing the Newsletter. Contact Arne if interested. Election of Of=icers-Mike Doherty The Membership unanimously approved the Nominating Committee s selection of new of?icers for next year. Next year s of?icers are as follows: President, Syd Robertson; 1 st Vice President, Rich Edelman; 2 nd Vice President, Ed Daley; Treasurer, John Pensec; Secretary, Joe Shannon Programs: Syd Robertson After today s meeting Dr. Cody Taylor will speak about Early Heart Attack Care. We will learn that heart attacks have beginnings that may occur weeks before the actual heart attack and why it is important to seek help promptly. Early care equals a better outcome. Dr. Taylor is a?irst year resident at Emergency Medicine at Hackensack UMC. After the December meeting the Ridgewood High School chorus will entertain us with holiday music. 1

2 Hobbyists Concerned-Jim Sutherland Hobbyist Ernest Hass, a Holocaust survivor, died on 8/23/16. No report of his death was received by the Hobbyists at the time. His death was learned while reviewing the status of all Life Members of the Hobbyists. The funeral for Norma Klau, wife of Barry Klau, took place on 10/22/16. Derek Smith s Jazz Celebration of Life was held at St. Peter s Church 10/25/16. in NYC on Tim Diyas Memorial will take place on Sat., 11/5/16 at the West Side Presbyterian Church at 1p.m. Scott McCann s Memorial will also take place on Sat., 11/5/16 at Christ Church (105 Cottage St. in Ridgewood) at 10a.m. Repast to follow at Seasons. The unveiling of Bernie Cohen and Fran Cohen s memorial stone will take place on Sun., 11/6/16 at Beth El Cemetery at 2:30P.M. They are: Abe Smulewitz (sponsored by Bill Raftery), Mike Monaghan (sponsored by Jim Deaver), Patrick Downes (sponsored by Bill Forster), Glenn Freebody (sponsored by Jeff Seise), John Garrigan (sponsored by Dave Varoli), and Jack Considine (sponsored by Don Togneri). Joseph Hovan has become a New Life Member. There are 447 Hobbyist members. 144 are in attendance at today s meeting. Print copies of the 2016 roster are available on a limited basis for members who do not have access to a computer. 2

3 Activity/Event Chairmen Reports Club chairmen should updated information about their groups activities to Giancarlo Bisone prior to the end of the month so he can put it on the Hobbyist website. Three activity chairmen gave reports in which the information is on the Hobbyists website. In keeping with what was decided when the website was activated, their verbal reports are not included in these minutes. Chairmen from the Book, Bocce, and Military History clubs all gave such reports. Dinner/Dances Charlie Tuch 360 people attended the October dinner/dance. Now it is time to sign up for the Dec. 13 holiday dinner/dance. Bowling-Charlie Tuch Bill Healy recently bowled a 702 series. New members are welcome. Come join us and have a lot of fun bowling. Golf-Paul Fazio Simulated golf starts Nov. 7. We will hold the events on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30a.m. at Golfology, 140 Hopper Ave. in Waldwick. $28 per golfer. Thirty have expressed an interest in the Atlantic City trip in May. Registration for next year s golf season begins in December. Investment Club Arthur Gilman Attendance doubled in October. This month s meeting will take place Mon., Nov. 14 at 2p.m. Scott Noyes, a well-known investment advisor, is the speaker. Public Affairs-George MacKey This month s meeting will take place Nov. 9, the day after the election. Alan Stein will lead a discussion about what happened. Tennis-George Shabet The club has 24 active members and typically?ields about 16 at regular meetings. Lennie Cheringal started a very successful program in which used tennis balls are donated to schools in Paterson. This is much appreciated by the schools, and they have expressed this in letters to the club. Extended Trips and Tours-Ray Cheesman Six people have signed up for the 13 day river cruise on the Danube which departs July 8, The tour is open to family and friends. 3

4 Twenty eight people have made reservations for the 12 day Eastern Caribbean cruise aboard the Queen Mary 2, which departs Nov. 26, This trip is now open to family and friends. Forty six people are on the list for the 10 day Utah trip with Group Tours. The trip departs Sept. 6, More information will be posted on the website. Thirty two people have made reservations for the 4 day Virginia Beach trip, which departs April 28, Fourteen people have made reservations for the 12 day Panama Canal cruise, which departs Jan. 30, Jim Sutherland adjourned the meeting at 10:56 a.m. Mike Doherty announces the new of?icers 4
