3 This year marks the 25 th Anniversary of the State Combined Campaign (SCC). Our first statewide campaign was held in That year, 6,500 State Employees donated $311,778. Last year, 9,412 State Employees generously donated more than $805,000 to charities across Alabama. Over the past 25 years, State Employees have made 240,704 donations totaling $16,084,133. These donations have brought help and hope to countless Alabamians as well as made life better for those overseas. The great thing about the State Combined Campaign is you choose where your dollars go and how they will help! Each year, State Employees have the opportunity to choose from more than 400 charities. YOU choose how your donation helps. To mark the 25 th anniversary of the SCC, our theme is love your State by giving and the ask is $25 to celebrate 25 asking those who have never given, or given a small gift, to consider a minimum gift of $25. We are asking everyone to consider a gift of $25 per month. That is an annual gift of $300. We asked SCC charities to share with you how a $25 gift, both annually and monthly, makes a difference. Here s a few examples: $25 - Transportation assistance to cover nearly 300 miles of travel for breast cancer patients through Susan G. Komen for the Cure $ meals to one of your neighbors in need through the Montgomery Area Food Bank and its partner food banks $25 - Provides a "Living Well" backpack of education and supplies for a newly diagnosed child via SE Diabetes Education Services $25 Provide the fuel for 6 transports to heal care for children through Kid One Transport System $25 - Purchase meals on wheels for a month for a homebound senior through MANNA $25 - Provide vaccinations for 2 puppies through Montgomery Humane Society $300 - Provide shelter to a homeless teen through Thirteenth Place $300 - Provide a day facility for handicapped adult through Snellgove Civitan Center $300 could help provide patients and caregivers with six (6) nights of free lodging at the Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge (American Cancer Society) when they have to travel to Birmingham for cancer treatment $300 - postage to send storybooks and DVDs to the children through Aid to Inmate Mothers (AIM) $300 - Funds medicine and supplies to treat 1,380 disaster patients through Blessings International The examples are endless. We have many more at See how your gift truly makes a difference. Join me in celebrating 25 years of Alabama State Employee generosity. Thank you for caring and thank you for sharing. Jeana Ross, State Combined Campaign Chair Secretary, Department of Early Childhood Education Program % reflects the percent of total expenses a charity spent on its overhead including fundraising, managment and general. 3

4 State Combined Campaign is the only authorized workplace campaign for state employees in Alabama. It is the only way State Employees can support charitable organizations through the ease of payroll deduction. Since 1993, Alabama s State Employees have contributed more than $16 million to charitable organizations across Alabama. 5 State Combined Campaign Facts State employees run the campaign. While the law names the Governor as the ultimate administrative authority, the governing of the campaign is handled by the Steering Committee, made up of 7 state employees representing the 3 branches of government. Locally, the campaign is governed by Local Agency Review Committees, or LARCs, made up of state employees locally that are responsible for the administration of the campaign within each campaign area. State employees decide which charities participate in the Campaign. Agencies and federations of agencies apply for admission to the LARC in each area of the state where they have offices and offer services to state employees. YOU choose which agency receives your donation. The SCC is a donor-designated campaign. You designate where your gift goes. Undesignated dollars are allocated in the same proportion as designated dollars. Agencies who do not receive a designation will get no campaign funds. Giving is easy! Gifts may be made through payroll deduction or a one-time cash, check or credit card donation. Most prefer payroll deduction since it allows us to make more a generous gift, yet pay for it in affordable installments throughout the year. Deductions start January 2019 and automatically cancel at the end of the year. It is a gift you will never miss, that someone else will never forget. Why should I give to the SCC? Your gift to the SCC will improve the lives of fellow Alabamians. The SCC supports more than 400 health and human service agencies that are working to make a difference and improve our communities. You have the choice to support you favorite issue or cause. It is your choice. Why should I give through the SCC instead of just sending the money directly to my favorite charities? By combining solicitations into a once-a-year campaign, the SCC reduces the need for individual (and costly) solicitations from charities. Charity accounting costs are reduced as well because gifts are consolidated into reliable monthly checks thanks to payroll deduction. What does the percentage number listed with each charity in the brochure mean? The number you see refers to the fundraising and administrative costs for each charity. SCC policies dictate charities keep their fundraising and admin costs below 30 percent. This assures the maximum possible funding goes directly to services, or programs; helping the people in our communities. Is my gift tax-deductible and will I receive a receipt? Yes, every SCC charity is a 501c3 registered charity. Pledge forms are 3-ply. The green copy is your receipt for tax purposes. If your tax adviser determines additional verification is required, contact the SCC office. Is there a minimum amount for payroll deduction? Yes. The minimum amount is $1.00 per month (annual gift of $12). No one can be forced to give. State law forbids any person, including supervisors and managers, from using any unfair or unreasonable pressure or tactics to make an employee participate in the SCC. If you feel you are being unfairly or unreasonably pressured, call Your favorite charity is not listed. How can an organization become affiliated with the SCC? The State Combined Campaign is open to all charitable organizations which: 1. Are 501(c)(3) under the IRS tax code 2. Have an office open and operating in the State of Alabama at least 15 hours a week 3. Receive at least 60% of funding from individuals in the State of Alabama There are a few more criteria, but if your organization meets these and wants to find out if you are eligible for participation, please contact the Statewide Campaign Manager s Office or fill out the online application and send it to 8 Commerce Street, Suite 1140, Montgomery AL What if I transfer to another State Department or Agency? Your pledge will not move. If you do not transfer your pledge, that amount will be considered pledge loss, hurting all SCC agencies. Please contact the SCC office for help in transferring your pledge.
