President s Message Dear Fellows and Friends, What a busy time it has been here in CFAQ HQ. Since our last newsletter, we have welcomed new Fellows, celebrated their success at the annual New Fellows Dinner and provided an orientation for them. This all could not have happened without the dedicated team that makes up the CFAQ Committee. Fiona, Ken, Wendy, Richard, Heidi, Areti and Ester all have busy personal and professional lives, yet they are happy to be on the Committee so that these events can be held and enjoyed by all Fellows. As you can appreciate, organizing the New Fellows dinner for 120 guests is a bit like organizing a wedding every year, except there is an absence of gifts, cake and a lovely holiday after it. They are a dedicated, talented and warm group of people, without whom these functions would not happen and the Association would cease to exist. Next time you see one of them, please thank them for all they do. You could even offer to buy them a drink. Better still, offer to join them on the committee. The highlight from this year s presentation of Fellowships at Government House was the Governor s speech about Churchill. This will soon be made available via our website, should you wish to read it. Copiers can be sent to those who do not have internet access. After the dinner, most of the 2013 Fellows arrived at BrightHQ for our inaugural orientation session and lunch. It was a great success, with presenters and new Fellows alike commenting on what a positive initiative this is. We will be calling for presenters each year, so you can offer your wisdom next year. The next event on our calendar is the 2013 Medallion Cocktail Party on Saturday 28 September, at the State Library. Past Fellows will speak about what the Fellowship has offered them and medallions will be presented. We have also been able to arrange for a spectacular fireworks display to celebrate their achievements, to which all of Brisbane has been invited. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP by Tuesday 17 September to secure a place. It is proving to be just as popular as our annual dinner. I look forward to seeing you in the near future Best wishes, Matthew Shepherd CFAQ President ( ) churchillfellowqld@gmail.com The New Fellows dinner remains one of the highlights of the CFAQ calendar. It is always such a happy event, with new Fellows buzzing about their achievements, with family and friends proudly supporting them. I am certain the 2013 Fellows will do us proud as they serve as future ambassadors for the Churchill Trust. My heartfelt congratulations to everyone of them. - by Daniel Hurst Churchill Fellows Association of Queensland Newsletter 2

Drawing the Line Matt Blyth (Screen writing, 1999) is a QLD based NT fellow and is about two months from releasing his first co-directed documentary feature film 'Drawing The Line': a heartfelt tale about Australia s oceans and those whose livelihoods depend on it. Its getting some good press at present featuring on The Project recently, ABC news 24 and Sunday LandLine also featured a story on the film. It will be premiering across the country later this year. If you're interested, please go to DTLFilm West End Statutory project Rhyl Hinwood AM (Sculpture relating to universities and cathedrals, 1986) has been commissioned to design and create a new statuary project at West End. Inspired by Westminster Abbey which has placed 20 th century martyrs in place of the traditional arrangement of statues, the Chapter of St John s Cathedral has resolved to likewise depart from the traditional arrangement of characters on the west end niches of the cathedral. Instead of the thirteen individual characters, the niches will house representations of 24 biblical characters who played significant roles in the story of Jesus. Bethany are housed together, as are James and John, the sons of thunder, and Peter and Paul as the twin leaders of the evangelisation. Standing alone is Christ at the centre, John the Baptiser as the forerunner and Mary Magdalene as the apostle of the apostles. This project will see St John s as home to a unique collection of statues and it will confirm St John s as a significant place of pilgrimage and tourism. The cathedral has issued an invitation to the community to take up this opportunity to be part of this historic project. It is possible to make a small contribution or to buy a statue outright. All donors will be recorded in a high quality ledger. Donations over $10,000 will also be noted in the tourist statues brochure that will be available in the cathedral. Flora s War Pamela Rushby (Educational television, 1994) has released her latest book Flora s War. It s 1915 and sixteen-year-old Flora Wentworth is in Cairo with her archaeologist father. Flora watches with alarm as first a trickle, and then a flood, of wounded soldiers are shipped into the city from Gallipoli. Newly-grown-up Flora has dreamed of a glittering social life in Cairo. Now, her dreams are set aside as she volunteers to assist exhausted, overburdened medical staff. She is soon transporting injured soldiers and helping out in overcrowded hospital wards set up in every suitable, and unsuitable, building that can be found in a city in crisis. But Flora still manages to fall in love, a little, along the way. Then, as she battles to save lives, and find her own, a tragic misunderstanding changes everything The arrangement has been designed to reflect the importance of some of the relationships the bible records: Mary, Martha and Lazarus of Churchill Fellows Association of Queensland Newsletter 7
The art of story telling Meg Philp (Interaction with master storytellers to gain expertise in storytelling, 1988) was recently story-telling at Phoenix Gardens Mt Glorious and will very shortly be heading off to the US to resume the trail of her fellowship tour 25 years ago. Meg is one of the featured storytellers at this year s Forest Storytelling Festival, hosted by the Story People of Clallam County. En route, Meg will be stopping over with a storyteller friend in NZ and performing in New Plymouth. After Jonesborough, she head back to Seattle to see a long-time storytelling friend. Upon her return from her fellowship, Meg helped found the Queensland Storytelling Guild. This past year, Meg has organised and tells to a gathering called "Storytelling Unplugged" (Stories for adults and children over 12) which meets first Friday of every month, pm at the Grange Library. She will be back there on Nov 1st. All welcome. Successful streets There must be something in the air in a quiet suburban street in Brisbane. As you have just read Meg Philp is a Fellow and, as of this year, so is her next door neighbour: Pauline McGrath. Perhaps next year s candidates should be advised to move in next door to both these successful fellows? 2013 New Fellows Dinner After a lovely afternoon spent at Government House, our new 2013 Fellows and 120 of their family and friends, along with distinguished guests, frocked up to attend the annual New Fellows Dinner at Victoria Park Golf Course. Much laughter was heard as pre-dinner drinks were taken on the terrace, before moving through for a two-course meal. Contact m.philp2@bigpond.com if you'd like to come along. Meg is currently Teacher-Librarian 3 days a week and a storyteller the rest. Congratulations to the new recipients of a Churchill Fellowship. Have the time of your life! For more information about Meg s journey, The MC for this year s dinner was Fiona Hawthorne, who also acted as Quiz Mistress for the Churchill Mastermind quiz. Twenty questions relating to all things Churchill, both personally and from a Fellowship perspective were hotly contested. Three tables won the night, showing their superior knowledge of Sir Winston and the Trust. Churchill Fellows Association of Queensland Newsletter 8
Thanks go to Richard Roylance for acting as our official photographer. Copies of the photos and more can be found on our website. n_of_queensland/photos.html What resonates at events like this is just how much fun it is catching up with past Fellows and hearing the projects of the new Fellows. It is very clear to see why these Fellows are chosen as their passion and commitment to the many and varied endeavours is very evident. Churchill Fellows Association of Queensland Newsletter 9

New Fellow Orientation On a crisp beautiful Saturday morning after one of the biggest days of their lives, several 2013 Fellows ventured down to BrightHQ at Teneriffe to speak about the Fellowship and gain some insight from a few more seasoned Fellows: Karen Spiller (Strategies for preparing female leaders for the role of Principalship, 2011) and Corinne Unger (Management of abandoned mines, 2009). Practicalities were discussed; advice and tips given and concerns raised and, hopefully, allayed. This ended up being just over two hours and was felt to be invaluable. The PowerPoint from the day will be available via our website if you missed it or wish to see what pearls of wisdom were given. This was the first time an orientation has been offered and came from an idea CFAQ committee member Ester Barter (Models of care for the delivery of continence services, 2011) had to assist with a practical induction into what it means to be a Fellow and how to maximise what is often the trip of a lifetime. After that, the meeting adjourned to the nearby London Club for some wine, fine food and cementing of Churchillian bonds. Thanks to Ester for her organisation, and Karen and Corinne for generously sharing their experiences. So, after hearing what each Fellow would save if their house was on fire (grand piano, the logistics of which was discussed) and what animal they could be and why (a deep-seated desire to be a chicken because they seem to be so happy), we got down to business.
