2 President s Message Dear Fellows and Friends, The year is coming to a close and each year it feels as if this happens more and more quickly each time. As I reflect on the events of the year, I have a real sense of satisfaction and triumph was a year of achievements. It began with the 2013 Australia Day awards where Justice Margaret White received an Officer of Australia award. Next was our AGM where the new committee was inducted and Dr Barry Appleton was awarded Life Membership in honour of his tireless work for the Fellowship. August saw us welcome 19 new Fellows into the family. What a delightful group of people they are. It is encouraging to know that each year our family of Churchillians grows and its future is in safe hands. The dinner was a success and continues to grow each year. The challenge for the committee next year is find a venue big enough! We ran our first New Fellow Orientation day, which proved to be a terrific accomplishment and one that has caught the eye of other Fellowship Associations both here and in the UK. Medallion recipients were honored at the Riverfire Medallion event this year. Details and photos are further in the newsletter. We plan on making this an annual event. Queensland fellows continued to appear in the news and win awards on the national and international stage. I recently attended a meeting of all Australian CFA presidents in Canberra, such a pretty city. This week presidents from all the Australian CFAs met in Canberra to review current plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary and to look at other ways we can participate in recognising this great achievement. The meeting was a wonderful opportunity for us to discuss the state of our associations, the trust and our futures. The atmosphere was very positive and we left Churchill House on Thursday morning full of energy. The key outcome of our discussions was that: The National convention, originally planned to be held in 2014 in New South Wales will now be rescheduled to now be held on the 9th of October 2015 in Sydney. More details will be revealed as we close in on The planned launch for all national activities will be the New Fellows Dinner in each state that year. Our CFAQ Facebook page has been updated with contacts for other states pages. Please drop by the page and like us. The next event on our calendar is the 2013 Christmas Party at Richard Roylance s home. Please RSVP if you plan on attending. I look forward to seeing many of you there. 3 201 3 Riverfire Medallion night On a beautiful early Spring evening, eligible recipients of the Churchill Medallion were given an opportunity to discuss their fellowships and receive their Medallion from Mr. Paul Tys, CEO of the Churchill Trust. Almost 100 guests arrived to share in their excitement and to witness the impressive firework display we organized put on by Brisbane Festival. Children, grandchildren and friends all came, making it a fun event. We are currently planning next year s medallion presentation. Watch this space. Fellows Update Mater Hospital magazine recognises Fellows Mater Physiotherapist Ester Barter and Rehabilitation Coordinator and Occupational Therapist Deirdre Cooke were recently presented with Churchill Medallions, for successfully completing their Churchill Fellowships. Friends of HEAL Adele Rice is the Chair of FHEAL: the Friends of HEAL Foundation which exists to provide creative arts therapy to young people of refugee backgrounds. FHEAL S mission is to provide direct relief from distress and enhance education and cultural integration for refugee adolescents. Further, FHEAL aims to increase the possibility of these young people experiencing the good mental health necessary to participate fully in learning and life. Formed in 2012, FHEAL assists and advocates for the important mental health work provided by services such as HEAL (Home of Expressive Arts and Learning) at Milpera State High School which has been providing creative therapy since The HEAL program is a Brisbane school-based mental health program which specialises in helping refugee kids well-being via creative methods. 4 Recently, FHEAL was launched with art, music, silent auction and live entertainment at their inaugural event, helping FHEAL to support refugee well-being through the provision of art therapy and music therapy. Their adventures can be found via the link below: n_of_queensland/follow_fellows/follow_fellows.html Wild Things seen at Mt Coot-tha On a wet Saturday, CFAQ vice-president Fiona Hawthorne ventured out with some artistic friends and her daughter Bronte to meet Sharyn Hall at her annual exhibition of handcrafted contemporary textiles. Sharyn and her copresenters were thrilled with the numbers which were much higher than previous exhibitions. The depth of talent on display was very impressive. Hats were modeled, with Bronte finding her inner pixie. Alas no photos were taken of the hat modeling. Churchill Fellows Association of Queensland Newsletter 4

5 Let the children have their night of fun and laughter. Let the gifts of Father Christmas delight their play. Let us grown-ups share to the full in their unstinted pleasures before we turn again to the stern task and the formidable years that lie before us, resolved that, by our sacrifice and daring, these same children shall not be robbed of their inheritance or denied their right to live in a free and decent world.
