2017 DAYSPRING VILLA ANNUAL REPORT "Christ-like Care"

FROM MY HEART TO YOURS WE OFFER HOPE DaySpring Villa has been providing services for domestic violence survivors for 38 years and services to human sex trafficking survivors for the past 6 years. As I look back over the years of my service at DaySpring Villa, one word comes to mind: hope. The women and their children who come to DaySpring Villa are broken. I witness on a daily basis how broken survivors have the opportunity to become free through this ministry. Without hope, our guests do not have the opportunity to be free from abuse and shame. Serving in this ministry can be sad and trauma-filled, even for our staff. The answer for all of us is hope. a future. I have the honor of working for a ministry that allows me to openly worship and freely share The Good News of Jesus Christ. Being a survivor of abuse is not an identity. Hope provides a future and an opportunity to have an identity in Jesus Christ. I am asking you to pray for DaySpring Villa. Pray for the guests to see and feel the hope of Jesus Christ. I pray that you choose this opportunity to believe in and share about the ministry of DaySpring Villa. Would you prayerfully consider supporting our mission today to help us provide Christ-like care to the women and children of DaySpring Villa? Sincerely, The first week can be the hardest. Guests wonder if they will be able to stay, if they can ever be truly safe, or if they will be accepted and loved for who they are. We provide an accepting environment that encourages each victim to step out of fear and into the light of God's love. As you read through the pages of this annual report, you'll walk through the first week of a guest's stay and see how your generosity is making an impact in her life. I can see the change in the survivors right before my eyes. I can see the pain as it is lifted and replaced with hope. Without hope, we do not have Susan Cox, M.S., CDSVRP DaySpring Villa Interim Executive Director WHO WE ARE DaySpring Villa is Oklahoma s only faith-based certified shelter for women and their children whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human sex trafficking. We offer a unique approach to restoring, rebuilding, and renewing lives by integrating goals-based programs with spiritual guidance and the time each individual needs to heal. Since 1980, DaySpring Villa has transformed the lives of more than 14,000 women and children in crisis. 2 INTRODUCTION DAYSPRING VILLA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 3

Freedom "I knew I was going to die. When my little girl told her dad he treated the dog better than Mommy, I knew I needed to leave for their sake. I did not want them to think that was okay." FREEDOM BEGINS WITH A PHONE CALL FOR A BROKEN SOUL FEAR "You can't express the shame and guilt you carry. You can't tell people what is going on because you are so ashamed. You don't want anyone to know." Making the decision to leave an abusive situation takes a tremendous amount of courage. The weight of shame keeps many women from seeking help. The fear of being found by abusers as they receive help grips their hearts the potential retribution can make their painful world even darker. It is easy to feel that there is no way out; life will always be this way. For many women, their home becomes their prison of pain. Their call to us for help is like a ray of hope that pierces the darkness. Those courageous women who make it through our doors have already been on a long journey. Sometimes they come to our shelter with shattered lives and no possessions. They often do not even know how to express what they need. They are simply grateful for their new-found freedom. The journey to recovery is not easy. The first week at DaySpring Villa is a critical time for our guests. After being physically abused or sexually trafficked for years (sometimes decades), they are weak, tired, and in need of help every step of the way. Because of donors like you, 143 women and 117 of their children began a new journey to freedom in DaySpring Villa is a beacon of hope for women who walk through our doors. Once inside the walls of our shelter, abused and trafficked women become our treasured guests, loved unconditionally and served without judgment. From the moment our guests arrive at DaySpring Villa, our caring staff and volunteers are ready to go into action to do the gentle work of restoring a broken soul. DaySpring Villa reception area. YOU ARE TOTALLY SCARED WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THOSE DOORS. BUT THE PEACE OF GOD IS HERE. 4 THE CALL TO FREEDOM DAYSPRING VILLA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT A WARM WELCOME 5

shelter "I did not know what to do. I had no expectations. I just wanted to trust them. I knew I was going to be okay when the guest advocate came over and loved me and hugged me." A PLACE FOR HEALING OF HOPE BEGINS HIDDEN "I grew up in a good home. I had loving parents. I never thought something like this could happen to me. It could be your next door neighbor and you would never know." DaySpring Villa provides a rich environment for healing and transformation. Immediately upon arriving at our doors, guests can rest knowing they are safe and will no longer be harmed by their abusers. Women who have been abused or sexually trafficked are made to feel dependent on someone else for their needs. Within their first week at DaySpring Villa, guests learn they do not have to earn our love or respect. They are valued and treasured for who they are. They are not asked to bring more than their broken hearts or leave behind more than their troubles. Through the steps in our program, they are empowered to better their situations. Women in our shelter do not have to worry about basic needs. We want them to focus on themselves and their children. We provide our guests an inviting room, access to a laundry room and recreation room, three meals per day plus snacks, clothing as needed, personal hygiene products, transportation services, and medical care. Our guests can stay with us as long as they are working on their goals toward self-sufficient living. Some go back to school to start or finish their degree. Others gain a new skill for a new career. Still others need more time to heal. All find an environment of growth to help them step into a confident future. New beginnings can be exciting but can also be filled with much uncertainty and anxiety. Within their first week, our guests may only be able to take baby steps of faith, but no steps are insignificant when they are empowered by hope. We celebrate each baby step at DaySpring Villa, and stand with our guests, no matter how long their journey may be. DaySpring Villa guest room. AT DAYSPRING VILLA, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BRING ANYTHING TO THE TABLE. IT IS OK TO SIMPLY BE HERE. 6 SHELTER DAYSPRING VILLA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT A NEW MORNING 7

Caring for children is at the heart of our mission. At DaySpring Villa, our mission includes caring for the children of our guests. Mothers do their best to hide the abuse they suffer, but often children witness firsthand the abuse their moms go through. Their young hearts are unable to cope with such a painful experience, and this trauma, if unchecked, can grow to develop into deep-rooted issues that will affect their adult lives. At the heart of our mission is a comprehensive age-appropriate trauma program for the children of our guests. SOCIAL SKILLS ENRICHMENT SCHOOL CLOTHES & SUPPLIES VISIT FROM SANTA & CHRISTMAS GIFTS PLAY THERAPY FOOTBALL GAMES FUN ACTIVITIES EASTER EGG HUNT & OUTFITS OPPORTUNITIES TO ATTEND CHURCH DaySpring Villa provides age-appropriate trauma care for the children of our guests. Children of domestic violence or human sex trafficking victims have suffered much trauma themselves. We want each child to feel like part of a big family. Being a part of DaySpring Villa means having fun! The school year is kicked off with a big carnival, new clothes, and a backpack full of school supplies. 10 CARING FOR CHILDREN DAYSPRING VILLA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 11

healing "Nobody wants to talk about domestic violence or human sex trafficking. At Dayspring Villa, we talk about it. We help each other and encourage each other." FROM TRAUMA BROKEN "After hearing for years that no one will ever love me and I am worthless, I turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with the abuse. The services they provide here saved my life. These people love me." TO TRIUMPH Abuse is rooted in power and control. A victim of domestic violence or human sex trafficking has been emotionally controlled for so long, she does not feel she has the ability to live free from her abuser. At DaySpring Villa, we empower victims to break free from the mentality that they cannot make it on their own. Transformation begins with a safety plan to give victims practical ways to remain safe as they plan to leave their abusers. Upon arrival at DaySpring Villa, a guest advocate helps each guest adjust to her new surroundings. Guests are also assigned a case manager who helps them set goals toward their recovery. Through the generosity of medical professionals in our community, guests have access to free medical care, mental healthcare, dental, and eye care. We also help our guests with legal matters, such as protective court orders and custody issues. There are many other practical services that are part of our program, such as transportation services to GED classes, college courses, employment interviews, legal appointments, and jobs. DaySpring Villa helps victims rewrite their stories from trauma to triumph by giving back to them the power to make choices for themselves. FOR A BROKEN SOUL As a faith-based organization, our programs and services are wrapped around our belief that God's love can help us overcome all circumstances, no matter how dark and painful they may be. Many guests share how even in their first few days at DaySpring Villa, they begin to feel a love and peace they have never felt before, as our Heavenly Father begins His work in the lives of these precious women. DaySpring Villa offers weekly Bible studies, prayer, and transportation to Sunday services at a local church. DaySpring Villa DaySpring Villa dining room serves as one of the meeting areas for guests to connect. WHEN I COULD NOT BELIEVE IN MYSELF, THEY BELIEVED IN ME. 12 PROFESSIONAL SERVICES DAYSPRING VILLA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT SPIRITUAL ENCOURAGEMENT 13

peace mind "When you are abused and so broken, it's easy to become an addict as a way to cope." MENTAL HEALTH COPING "There is a whole world of us here. Most of us have turned to some kind of addiction in the past to cope. It's the only way you feel you can survive the constant abuse." PROGRAM Even with the freedom and safety our shelter provides, our guests still need much more than just a place to escape or to hide from their abusers. Their recovery requires a mental health program to support their healing. Through our unique partnership with Destiny Wellness Center (a trauma, grief, and addiction clinic), DaySpring Villa provides on-site mental health services. Guests can now receive assessments for trauma and substance abuse within hours of admission, and they are able to set their own appointments for further care. The women who reach out to DaySpring Villa have been traumatized and are suffering from moderate to severe post-traumatic stress. Many have developed an addiction or destructive behavior as a way to cope with the trauma. The mental health services guests receive give a level of professional care some could never afford on their own. Because of your generous support in 2017, our guests received 963 hours of onsite mental health care. Thank you for helping women who have been traumatized find the peace of mind to start a new life. OF SUPPORT FOR THE JOURNEY AHEAD When guests become selfsufficient and are ready to leave our program, they can continue to receive support from DaySpring Villa through our Non-Residential Program. Some of our programs and services remain available for them as long as they need our support. I'VE NEVER FELT DISPOSABLE HERE. I WAS FREE TO STAY AS LONG AS I NEEDED. DaySpring Villa provides guests who are ready to be a part of the Non-Residential Program household items, small appliances, furniture, and ongoing support. 14 MENTAL HEALTH DAYSPRING VILLA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT THE ROAD AHEAD 15
