3 WOMEN S PEER EDUCATION WHO? Native Women. One adult mentor and one high school teen, per tribe. WHAT IS IT? Developed by the Indigenous Peoples Task Force, the Women s Peer Education program trains Native women to conduct small-group reproductive health parties within their existing social circle. The two-day training will include a wide range of women s health issues -- anatomy, sexual health, contraception, STDs, HIV, testing, treatment, and risk reduction. WHEN? April 25th and 26th, 2007, from 9:00am - 4:30pm WHERE? Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, Portland, OR WHY? To create a supportive network of Native women within the NW Tribes who are knowledgeable about sexual health, and to increase community awareness about a variety of reproductive health issues. COMMUNITY BENEFITS: The goals of the program are to create a safe place for women to learn about reproductive health, empower women to care for their bodies, and encourage inter-generational learning and sharing about sex and STDs. PERSONAL BENEFIT: Once completed, each participant will receive a $150 stipend to carry out the intervention in their community, $75 per health party to cover training material expenses, and small gifts for 40 community participants per tribe. RESPONSIBILITIES: Once trained, each participant will be asked to return to their home community and conduct at least two Sexual Reproductive Health parties involving 10 family members or friends. 7 Directions TRAVELING NORTH INTO PORTLAND ON INTERSTATE 5 Traveling north on I-5, follow the signs to the Interstate 405-N exit. Continue on 405-N/Hwy 26 West for about a half-mile and take the 6th Avenue exit (one-way) on your right. Continue down 6th Avenue to the second stop light, which is Hall Street. TRAVELING WEST INTO PORTLAND ON INTERSTATE 84 Traveling west on I-84, get into the middle/left-hand lanes as you approach downtown. Take the I-5 South exit from the left lane where I-84 ends at the Willamette River. Cross the I-5 bridge across the Willamette River (the Marquam Bridge). Immediately on the other side of the bridge take the left-hand 405-N/Hwy 26 West exit. Continue on 405-N/Hwy 26 West for about a half-mile and take the right-hand 6th Avenue exit (one-way). Continue down 6th Avenue to the second stop light, which is Hall Street. TRAVELING EAST INTO PORTLAND ON US HWY 26 Traveling east on US 26 get into the middle lane as you approach the tunnel. Stay in the middle lane as it turns into the downtown exit (Market Street). Continue straight down Market Street and take a right on 5th Avenue (one way). Continue down 5th Avenue for four blocks and turn right on Hall Street. TRAVELING SOUTH INTO PORTLAND ON INTERSTATE 5 Traveling south on I-5, get into the middle/left-hand lanes as you approach downtown. Stay on the freeway and cross the I-5 bridge across the Willamette River (the Marquam Bridge). Immediately on the other side of the bridge take the left-hand 405-N/Hwy 26 West exit. Continue on 405-N/Hwy 26 West for about a half-mile and take the right-hand 6th Avenue exit. Continue down 6th Avenue to the second stop light, which is Hall Street. Our building is on Hall, between 5th and 6th street. The NPAIHB offices are located directly above the PSU Student Health Center and the McDonald s restaurant - The elevator is just to the right of the Health Center s entrance. We are on the 3rd floor. The parking garage entrance is between 5th and 6th, and can be entered on both Harrison and Hall. Please call if you have any trouble along the way.
