Board Chair and CEO s Message What an honour it is to be an individual of South Asian origin and having been conferred this tremendous opportunity of establishing Aurat Health Services. From the time of incorporating Aurat Health Services in April 2009, we have covered many miles but seldom has this journey been alone. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one who we ve come into contact with over the past 2 years and we look forward to our collaborations in the years to come. The establishment of Aurat Health Services may have been the passion of one individual; however, the journey, learning and progress has been the collective effort of hundreds of supporters and well-wishers. An idea which originated on a café napkin (as many great ones do!), has grown arms and legs over a short period of time. We have made significant advancement in enabling health, community and social service education, awareness and resources for the women and families of the South Asian community. These achievements would not have been possible without the support of dedicated volunteers, the South Asian media as well as the enthusiasm of the South Asian community at large. Aurat s journey is indebted to the prayers and unconditional support of family and friends for they are the ones who helped make this dream a reality. We are extremely thankful for the dedication of the Board of Directors for the support and guidance that they have provided. We would like to acknowledge all funders and grant making bodies for their encouragement and support in getting us up on our feet. We look forward to sharing and continuing this organization s journey with all of you. Baldev Mutta Board Chair Samina Talat CEO
Aurat Health Services is a charitable organization working to empower Canadian Women of South Asian descent (South Asian Women) in pursuing happier, healthier lives. The first organization of its kind, this past year Aurat Health Services has delivered training sessions, educational seminars, outreach services and set out on an intensive public and stakeholder engagement strategy to tackle health issues and increase health based education within the South Asian community. Having reached out to over 40,000 people in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Aurat Health Services strives to ensure that South Asian women have the tools and support to take care of their health needs. Watch Samina Talat, CEO introduce Aurat Health Services on Rogers TV
Structure Aurat Health Services was founded and is currently run by Samina Talat (CEO). The organization is run with the help of 17 volunteers who contributed 450 hours of their time to support the work undertaken by the CEO. The CEO is accountable to Five Board of Directors, as per Canada Revenue Agency Guidelines, who meet every quarter to discuss communication, marketing and outreach strategies. The CEO also receives counsel from an Advisory Committee made up of 14 leaders from the Health and Communications sectors.

Why Aurat? Aurat means Woman in a number of South Asian languages. South Asian Women have always kept a very close relationship with their families and defer to them on most aspects of their life, including in health and wellness. Many of these women hold their ethnic traditions, cultures and values in great esteem and are often unable and unwilling to use the mainstream health support and services available in Ontario due to linguistic and cultural concerns. Many of their health concerns (mental and physical) go unreported because of the inaccessibility of appropriate assistance and support. As the main care givers of South Asian families, it is crucial that these women live healthier lives, to ensure healthier families.
Why Aurat? 833,315 people living in Ontario identify themselves as South Asian, 86% of who live in the Greater Toronto Area. (Statistics Canada, Census 2006)
People Why Aurat? Graph 1: South Asians in GTA (Statistics Canada, Census 2006) 14,000 12,000 10,000 8,000 6,000 4,000 2,000 Don't Speak English or French (Gender) Men Women 0 Punjabi Urdu Gujarati Hindi Bengali Mother Tongue
Aurat Health Services Works In August 2009 Aurat Health Services s work commenced without any funding. With no money in hand Aurat Health Services started conducting community and stakeholder outreach and information and education sessions. In April 2010 Aurat Health Services received a 2 year grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation s immediately increasing the resources and working capacity of the organization.
Aurat Health Services Works June 10, 2010 SOUTH ASIAN WOMEN'S BARRIERS TO MAMMOGRAPHY August 29, 2010 HEART & STROKE - EDUCATION AND AWARENESS September 21, 2010 HEART & STROKE: CPR & AED SKILLS December 11, 2010 AURAT'S GUP SHUP January 22, AM HEALTH INFORMATION SESSION March 6, 2011 CPR SKILLS & AED AWARNESS FOR SOUTH ASIAN FAMILIES
Aurat Health Services Works A number of sessions were open to men as well to give them the tools to better understand and support female family members and friends.
Aurat Health Services Works Along with the training sessions, Aurat Health Services has directly assisted 136 South Asian women with their health related needs. The Organization helps women by listening to and understanding their issues, considering cultural sensitivities and referring them to appropriate supports and services available in the community including to family doctors, CCACs, lawyers, shelters, counsellors and therapists.
Aurat Health Services Works In 2010/2011 Aurat Health Services met and worked with community leaders, health care providers, public servants, charities, researchers and relevant professionals to ensure that the health issues and concerns faced by South Asian women were given serious consideration, and appropriate support and services pursued to help alleviate their problems. Leading health concerns include: Arthritis Heart Disease Diabetes Cancer Trauma Depression Drug and Alcohol addiction Mental or Physical disability Mental and/or Physical abuse Child abuse Domestic Violence Skills Training Employment and Education
Aurat Health Services Works Aurat Health Services has used the media considerably to reach out to South Asian women and their families, to educate the public about the health issues experienced by these women, the importance of tackling these issues for the benefit of the women and their families and advising them on the resources available to them. The work undertaken by Aurat Health Services has featured in newspapers, magazines, on TV and on radio and has enabled the charity to reach over 40,000 individuals living in the GTA.
Funding & Support In 2010/2011 Aurat Health Services was grateful to receive funding and sponsorship support to pursue its work from the following organizations: Ontario Trillium Foundation The Pendle Fund at the Community Foundation of Mississauga United Way of Peel region Region of Peel Social Planning Council of Peel Family Education Centre Brampton and Area Community Foundation Scotiabank WTOR 770AM Radio Channel The events and outreach work undertaken by Aurat Health Services would not have been possible without the support of these organizations and our 17 volunteers who contributed 450 hours over the year.
