4 Western Australia Lions Drug Education Foundation WALDEF Meeting: February, 2013 Chairperson s report W1 Greetings Chairpersons!! Things have slowed down as the dust settles on the new year. I have ordered some new wristbands in hopes of getting the WALDEF message out amongst the people in our communities. They are a duel color in yellow and blue measuring 1 inch with inlayed color WALDEF & TINO on front and WALDEF & TINO (find us on fb!) on the backside in a bold eye catching font! I was able to order 600 with 100 free so for a total of 700 wristbands including shipping and handling our total came to $ I have provided brochure samples to the zone chairpersons for distribution. I noticed that after this mail-out we received at least 2 more donations from clubs. One donation was enough to cover the mailing costs of all the brochures I had sent. I have not, however, heard anything else pertaining to WALDEF or requests for additional supplies If you or any of your clubs are interested in obtaining any promotional materials or wristbands please contact me at bethcaunt@gmail.com The WALDEF Facebook page is still up and running great. You can now access it by typing the word : WALDEF. Please feel free to stop by and Like or Share it with your friends. One of our next projects will be a brochure but this one will be slightly different. Its theme will be A WAY OUT a handy guide for teens who would like to save face while still holding on to their moral standards of not participating in alcohol or drug use. The difference is that we would like to use this brochure as a focus for a lecture that we can present to small groups of teens attending at a local library or community centre. I would like to test drive this and if successful, present it to the clubs for consideration for a community project. I am still committed to this project and will hopefully have more progress to report at our next meeting. Respectfully, Beth Caunt Drug Awareness Chairperson 4

5 District 201W2 District Chairman WALDEF REPORT FOR February 2013 AIMS FOR THE YEAR The District 201W2 Lions Drug Education Theme for the Year is: Respect is My Choice Too Our aims this year are: To make more Lions aware of our foundation (WALDEF) and what it does To provide Lions Clubs with information and advice on Drug and Alcohol Education issues, as well as some literature and materials To encourage Lions to join with local health and other groups in promoting health messages within their communities To encourage clubs of the district to take on some major projects within their own communities e.g. Drug & Alcohol Information Forums, Youth Events etc To provide clubs and interested individuals with network contacts through WALDEF, Local Drug Action Groups, Drug and Alcohol Office, Health Dept etc METHODS The ways that WALDEF will try to achieve the above are: To assist in procuring funding of local and statewide WALDEF projects through government and NGO grant agencies To provide support to clubs, conventions or events to promote the harm minimization and alcohol control messages To provide a presentation materials and information on living a more healthy, drug-free lifestyle To assist with the planning of drug education forums, events and projects in the district WORK COMPLETED BY WALDEF ALDAF (Lions Drug Aware Foundation) with the assistance of WALDEF inaugurated a youth-focused website Tune in Not Out (TINO) This is the modern way that drug education and assistance messages can be distributed via a website and podcasts to reach a very wide youth audience for a low cost and consistently high standard of professional assistance. All material on the site is authentic and has passed the high standards of all the Australian medical, health, police and government authorities. The website gives a whole-of-health approach to answering the problems of youth and spans everything from social media and posting stories, podcasts and videos to mental and physical health issues as well as advice on the effects of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and other toxic substances. Check out this address: 5

6 WALDEF is also promoting the responsible driving message through issue of free car-tidy bags with the message R=MC 2 Respect is My Choice Too. These bags are available to all Lions clubs. An information brochure about WALDEF was also printed and is available to all clubs. We are in the process of designing a Youth-focused brochure for use at youth and community events to relay some of the health messages more effectively. Lanyards have been printed with the WALDEF logo and will be given to the Convention Committees of 201W1 and 201W2 for their conventions this year We have been working on supplying other merchandise and information to Lions and will be advertising items available through our district and state newsletters in the coming months A WALDEF Powerpoint Presentation on Are You in Control of Your Health? Drinking Alcohol, Myths & Truths has been completed. This is available to clubs to be presented at meetings. Another WALDEF Powerpoint Presentation on drug use and abuse is being prepared so that it can be presented to clubs. This is still being constructed and should be available soon. The WALDEF Standard Drinks Kit along with the Powerpoint presentation on alcohol and your health was made available for demonstration to Lions clubs in our district. I have been appointed to the board of the WA Local Drug Action Groups Inc (WALDAG) for and look forwarding to consolidating the relationship of this organization with WALDEF since we have many aims in common. Thanks to all the clubs who have supported our efforts previously and promise to do so in the future. Without your donations and interest we would not have been able to achieve so much to date. We are here to support you. Feel free to contact me by preferably by at geologica@upnaway.com or write to PO Box 246 Willetton or WALDEF Secretary, PO Box 2524, Malaga Brian Davis 201W2 District Chairman WA Lions Drug Education Foundation 6
