1 2nd June 2016 Phone: York Street, Launceston Tasmania From the Principal: Our P.B.S. Values are: Respect for Ourselves Respect for Others Respect for our Learning BeAttitudes: Be Honest Tomorrow our School celebrates our Feast Day. The feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated in our school with a whole school Mass, followed by the SHCS Cup where vertical class teams compete across fun games and activities to win the SHCS Cup. Having students in each team from P-6 is a great way to continue to build pastoral care and community amongst the students. In the afternoon we finish the day with SHCS Got Talent. Each class has nominated one act to perform on the day. The afternoon usually kicks off with a surprise guest appearance by a famous artist or act. Mr. Julian Davie and Mr. John Hood are the only two staff who know who the special act is. Sacred Heart Feast Day Friday 3rd June 9.30am Mass, Church of Apostles 11.40am SHCS Cup, Presentation Hall 1.45pm Sacred Hearts Got Talent, St Albies Celebrating together the feast is one of the most widely practiced within the Catholic Church, taking Jesus' physical heart as the representation of his divine love for humanity. The devotion especially emphasizes the unmitigated love, compassion, and long-suffering of the heart of Christ towards humanity. For our school it is a chance to gather together and celebrate the positive and pastoral spirit, culture and climate of our School. I will be, along with several staff, attending the funeral of Tamieka Smith tomorrow. The willingness and offers of practical support from families and members of our school community for Shaun, Lily and Harper has been overwhelming. An was sent out yesterday with a link for any willing parents to nominate any ways they can offer practical help for the family as well as any families within our school currently or in the future that will need a helping hand. The SHCS Care Team will be the medium that our school will use to offer a helping hand to families for the short and long term, when needed.

9 Grade 2 van Ryn have been learning about Verbs. We learned they are 'doing' or 'action' words. We used pipe cleaners to make a man. We then shaped our man so he was doing some sort of movement. We stuck them on a piece of paper and completed a background. Our last job was to write a sentence containing our verb. We had a lot of fun making our Verb Men. working with vulnerable people registration Government legislation now requires all people working or volunteering with vulnerable people to be registered. It is an expectation placed on our schools that any person who is on an excursion, helping in the classroom, helping out with students getting changed after swimming, attending camps etc must have this registration. If parents do not have registration or registration is pending you may not be able to volunteer and attend the excursion or school event. This is something that we do not want to have to do but as legislation and system policy we need to adhere to. How to apply for a WWVP and Number 1. Complete the online application form 2. Print the Application Receipt which is generated when the application has been completed in full 3. Take the Application Receipt to a Service Tasmania shop, pay the fee ($17.60) and have your 100 point check to confirm identity Once your registration has been approved and you receive your WWVP card, please bring it to the school office so your name, registration number and expiry date can be recorded and verified.

10 The Camp Quality Primary education program will be visiting on June 23rd. Prep Grade 2 at 12:20pm and Grade 3 6 at 2:10pm. Hi parents and carers! We re writing from Camp Quality to let you know that our Primary School Education program has been invited to perform at your child s school. Camp Quality is Australia s most trusted children s charity. Our purpose is to create the best quality of life for kids living with cancer and their families. At no cost to schools, parents or students- our vivacious and loveable puppets, Kylie, Dean and Melissa visit schools to help support children affected by cancer. The puppets dispel myths and misconceptions that are commonly associated with the illness. Since 1988 our program has visited schools across Australia, sharing an interactive, engaging narrative that explains: The ins and outs of cancer Why their peer who has undergone treatment may look a little different (due to the side effects of chemotherapy) Why it s important to be supportive of their classmate who is either living with cancer or has a diagnosed parent or sibling That cancer isn t contagious, so it s ok to play The importance of positivity and recognising our own strengths It took away the stigma and fear from cancer. As we have a student at our school being treated for leukaemia, it helped the children understand what she is going through and why she has lost her hair. Having an understanding of the disease has certainly increased the empathy in the other children too. - Primary school principal The manner in which the show addresses cancer is age appropriate while clearly articulating the facts. It has helped me to be able to talk about cancer in a positive and reassuring manner - Primary school teacher Following the performance, students are encouraged to ask questions and share their concerns. While we are able to answer most of their questions and concerns, we provide teachers with resources to supplement the performance and aid classroom discussion. If any concerns arise after the performance, please feel free to contact us. If you would like more information about the program or would like to see a clip of our puppets in action, please visit You re also welcome to contact our puppet team by ing us at Kylie@campquality.org.au or by calling As a not-for-profit charity, all services come at no financial cost to the families we support. Thus, we rely heavily on the generosity of everyday Australians to keep our programs running. To donate, please visit our website. Need help talking about cancer at home? The Kids Guide to Cancer app has been developed to support children age 8-13 who have a parent, sibling, friend or loved one with cancer. Providing them with age appropriate information, the app answers some of the big questions kids have about cancer and gives them ideas on how they might be able to support their loved one.
