the Nugget Pioneer Arts, Inc. - June Serving Nevada County Artists since 1965 General Membership Meeting June 13, 7-9 pm Speaker: Karen Lilly Gourd Artist Board of Directors President David Johnson Vice President Ed Porter Treasurer Sandra Delong Secretary Lisa Johnson Membership Katie Wolff Event Setup and Tear Down Director - Ernie Demeter Roster Master Ed Porter Program Director Cathy Diamond Scholarship and Education Lisa Johnson Art in Public Places Sandy Lindblad Newsletter Publisher Dori Greenbaum Webmaster Linda Roemisch Board Member at Large Francene Holland Pioneer Arts, PO Box 674 Grass Valley, CA From the President Greetings Pioneer Arts Members, It s hard to believe that I am writing my last message as president of Pioneer Arts. As many of you know at our May meeting we voted in a great slate of new officers and board members. With Cathy Diamond as our new president, I know our club is in good hands. Cathy brings the experience and enthusiasm that we need to continue to put on great programs and shows and to grow as a significant part of the art community. As I was fortunate enough to have so many wonderful club members support me through my terms as president, I am sure Cathy will be able to count on all of you for the same. Ed Porter will continue as vice-president. He s always there, ready to help in so many different ways. Sandy Delong, our faithful treasurer, will also continue to keep our finances in order. Karen Anderson will be taking over as secretary, replacing Lisa Johnson who is stepping down after many years keeping the minutes and doing other key jobs. Continuing on the board will be Katie Wolff (membership chairperson), Ernie Demeter (setup chairman), Dori Greenbaum (newsletter editor), and Francene Holland, who always is there to help with art shows. Newly elected to the board is Doug Marsh, who has already been involved in organizing a number of club art events. Stepping down from the board is Warren Knox, who kept the membership data base, worked tirelessly on the calendar, and has helped with all the shows. With this strong band of leaders in place, I see only good things ahead for Pioneer Arts. In the past two years I have seen a host of new members join the club. Many have stepped forward right away to take leadership roles in various activities, many others have joined committees, helped at shows, and participated in various programs such as Children s Art, Art in Public Places, the Children s Festival, and the Scholarship Committee.

It has been a pleasure to serve as president. I couldn t have managed it without the support of so many experienced members in the club who have given me invaluable guidance. I certainly couldn t have managed without the loving support of my wife Lisa. I look forward to participating in future events. And I thank you all for the opportunity to serve as president. Best wishes to all, David Johnson Painting by Katie Wolff Children s Festival This year s Children s Festival at Pioneer Park in Nevada City will be held on Friday, July 20. This renaissance fair for children offers a multitude of activities for children, including a cardboard castle sponsored by Pioneer Arts. Children are given brushes and paint and set to work decorating the walls and towers as they see fit. Pioneer Arts volunteers along with a few other community volunteers are there to help outfit the children in paint shirts, mix paints, and oversee the activity. It s always a delight to watch the children transform the drab cardboard walls into a rainbow of colors. The festival is divided into two sessions, a morning session from 9 AM to Noon and an evening session from 5 PM to 8 PM. If you would like to help at the booth, sign up at the next Pioneer Arts meeting or send me an (dvdjhnsn04@gmail.com). Morning workers arrive at 8 AM to help set up the castle and prepare paints, while evening workers arrive at 4:30 PM. Don t miss out in this great opportunity to contribute to your community and experience the joy that is the Children s Festival. - David Johnson Avanguardia Wine Tasting Room Empire Mine Art Exhibit June 4 - July 9, West Main St. Grass Valley (530) Rob and Marilyn Chrisman, owners of Avanguardia Winery will be hosting their celebration of the Empire Mine. This year Pioneer Arts members will be showing their work. All Pioneer Arts Club Members are invited to stop by on the Second Saturday, June 9th or any time the wine tasting room is open to see the Exhibit. All members are encouraged to contact Marilyn concerning other open Second Saturday events throughout the year.

June Membership Meeting /Demonstration-

Board Meeting Summary, April 30, 2012 At the May board meeting we decided to update the membership list on the website and have hard copies of the membership list made for all board and committee members. For upcoming programs we discussed the critique format. Scholarships were awarded on May 31 at Nevada Union High School. Winners will be invited to share their art at the June meeting. Cathy reported that the Spring Membership Show cleared $218. We are looking at making a permanent Pioneer Arts sign and category signs, such as Oil, Acrylic, etc. We are also looking at improving the ID cards by the pictures and avoiding the overcrowding that resulted this year when the Center took away 20% of our wall space without telling us. Ed reported that Northern Mines Exhibit is on schedule, with the e-waste fundraiser coming up soon. Doug gave an update on the Empire Mine exhibit to be held at Avanguardia s tasting room. Elections were set for the May meeting. We will finalize next year s budget at the June board meeting. Our Pioneer Arts summer BBQ will be at Dori Greenbaum, s house again, July 11. Our next board meeting is June 4 at Lisa and David Johnson s house at 10 AM. It will be a potluck brunch. All Pioneer Arts club members are welcome to join us. Tom Head, owner of Abreu Gallery Picture Framers, 3712 Auburn Blvd Sacramento (916) Speaker May General Meeting ART IN PUBLIC PLACES Interested in showing your work in Grass Valley or Nevada City businesses? 5 E-Waste Fund-raiser Saturday, May 12 Rite Aid Parking Lot Riki Colby Riki, Cathy Diamond & Jerry Murphy The Club wants to thank everyone who participated in collecting e-waste for this important fund-raiser. We will be receiving a check from the company and will let you know then how much money was raised. Jerry, Cathy & E-waste worker Remember to pay your annual dues. Membership forms attached. Be sure to let us know your interests.

Northern Mines Exhibit Report Hi everyone, We just thought we might let you know that we had a fairly good turn out at our E- Waste event last month. Thanks to all the hard work from our members... Although we did well we did fall a little short of needs for the prize money for the Northern Mines Exhibit. That is why I am writing to give all the members a heads up that this means we will have to have another fundraiser and that means we need a few more volunteers We have discussed doing a raffle, with a few high-end prizes like we did two years ago with the wine tasting prizes That was very successful thanks to the well organized, creativity of four wonderful ladies We already have two prizes promised We just need some help pulling this off If any of you have an idea you think might do well, please let us know The Northern Mines Exhibit is a part of Pioneer Arts Club s history; its success depends on volunteers to keep it alive This year is kind of the proving point that we still want it I have read in our history that this Exhibit was a very large draw to Grass Valley many years ago It was so big they rented large places to do the show and the budget was in the thousands. I have dreamed that we could grow this back to what it once was But if our membership does not see that it is worth working for then it is only mine and a few others dream. The prospectus in on line, enter early, tell all your artist friends who are not members about it I have call to artist cards you could take on your travels this summer. I take them to art store s bulletin boards, any place with a board you can hang things on I leave them in coffee shops just ask me for a few I will have them at the meeting coming up, you can put a few in your purse or pocket, it all helps The more entrees we have the more money the club makes. This money is what helps pay for demonstrations we all enjoy, scholarships we give to young artists, Mim s children s program at the Growers Market Rent for our meeting place etc. Riki Colby & Jerry Murphy Co-Chairs For Prospectus, go to Best of Show--Linda Roemisch Two Oldies but Goodies Ken Hosmer Watercolor Workshop Sept 24-28, 2012 North Star Mine House in Grass Valley Approximately $250 for 5 days 9 am-4 pm Contact: ellygould@aol.com or Call

They have always had a large interest in the art world and after their travels in Asia for 3 months, they decided to move to GV and follow their dreams. So they are opening their doors at 156 mill street to any and all artists that feel they can contribute to fill the void of what GV doesn't have. 10 Who We Are Pioneer Arts Incorporated is a nonprofit association that works to promote the visual arts and artists of Western Nevada County. The organization was founded in 1965 by a group of dedicated artists who met regularly to paint together. Today, Pioneer Arts provides a friendly and supportive meeting place for artists of all skill levels and for others who are interested in visual arts. Activities are designed to inspire and encourage members and guests in their artistic pursuits as well as to encourage community service in the arts. Meetings Each year Pioneer Arts schedules 10 general meetings each on the second Wednesday of the month. The highlight of the general meeting is the presentation by a guest artist in the form of a demonstration or lecture. These informative sessions are open to the public and are free unless we secure a nationally recognized artist. Then, a small fee will be charged to the public. November through March meetings are held from 1 PM to 3 PM. April through October the meetings are from 7 PM to 9 PM. The meetings are located at the Center for the Arts, 314 West Main Street, Grass Valley. To complete the year two informal gatherings are held in July and December. NEW MEMBER INFORMATION Exhibits Pioneer Arts sponsors two art sales and exhibitions annually; a Spring Membership Show and in the Fall the Northern Mines Show which is juried and open to all visual artists located in Northern and Central California. Pioneer Arts also sponsors Art in Public Places, a program which provides the opportunity for members to exhibit their work at local businesses. How To Join Those interested in becoming members of Pioneer Arts are invited to attend the next general meeting. Annual dues are $35 and cover July 1st through June 30th. The fee includes a subscription to our monthly newsletter, The Nugget, which is an excellent source of information about art activities and events in our community, Western Nevada County, and Statewide as well as features about art techniques and art history. Member advertising is also available. The annual membership also includes free links to member-artists websites from our website... You can join using PayPal right on our website.
