1 Prickly Pear Postings Volume 28, No. 4 Co-President s Message submitted by Marjorie Wright With our SEV AAUW years drawing to a close, Co-President Toni Corrigan and I would like to thank all our members for their attendance and support. Together we have made progress to furthering AAUW s mission of advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. April/Summer2017 Inside this issue: April General Meeting Meet our Advertisers AZ AAUW Spring Events Evening Book Club Afternoon Book Club Website Management Info 2 3 During these busy times, it is difficult find members who will step forth and volunteer to head the various committees which are needed to further this mission and to keep our club running smoothly. This year we were blest with a strong and committed group of volunteers who served as our board members. As a result, thanks largely to the committee members who spent countless hours planning and implementing various events, we raised record amounts for both AAUW Funds and Local Scholarships. This was done in a manner which was both fun and educational - a great win-win situation. Our International Dinner was such an outstanding success that it will be talked about for years to come. The efforts of Community Action Committee and its group of faithful volunteers did much to further the cause of literacy while promoting our club. The informative programs we had at our general meetings were the successful result of the joint efforts of our program chairs. The membership committee and new member coordinators did much to help individual members as well as the club as a whole. The remaining board members each served an important purpose and have each carried out specific, important and time-consuming tasks. One of the strongest features of our club has been its newsletter as well as its website. The website carries not only the current newsletter, but archives of past newsletters going several years back. Our website is very informative and remarkably up-to-date. During our long summer hiatus it will be our prime method of communication. Have you served on our SEV AAUW Board, or if so, have you done so lately? The above is not only meant to thank those who have filled these positions. It is also meant to bring attention to the fact that there are many opportunities for every member to volunteer to help fulfill our AAUW mission while serving as a board member. There are still board positions open waiting for someone to agree to fill them. You will find serving on the board to be a new and satisfying opportunity. To do so, contact the two members who stepped forth and agreed to be next year s Co-Presidents: Toni Corrigan and Tillie Fortner. 6 Page 6 Prickly Pear Postings COMMUNITY ACTION. Our volunteer service for the year will be coming to an end at the end of April. The Community Action Committee would like to give a special thanks to Margaret Noser, Sharon Gale, Helen Semple, Ann Slattery and Sheila Petriello for their continued dedication to the students in the Chandler School District. From January through March of this year we have added another 58 hours of volunteer service at San Marcos school alone. Our volunteers have successfully supported the 6-Minute Reading Program in five classrooms at San Marcos and the Art Masterpiece and Junior Achievement Programs at San Marcos, Galveston and Hartford elementary schools. Some of our volunteers recently participated in the Read Across America Day Celebration at San Marcos. Everyone who participated had a great time reading Dr. Seuss books to students in all of the grades. We wish you all a safe, healthy summer and hope you will consider joining our volunteer efforts when you return in October. Sandy Shepoiser, shepmilk@aol.com or Luann Hulbert, luannhulbert@gmail.com or SOUTHWESTERS will return in the fall GREAT DECISIONS will return in the fall
