First of all, we would like to thank all the general members of Society of Nepalese Students in Korea (SONSIK) and all the intellectuals for your great support in the General Assembly held on August 22nd -23rd, Sun Moon University Asan. The main objective of SONSIK Newsletter is to disseminate the informations and updates about the activities that are organized by SONSIK executive body as well as all the general members of the society within Korea, in Nepal or in any other countries. The main focus of this issue is the major activities during our General Assembly. 3 Message From SONSIK 12th Executive Committee President Respected Members, As we are at the end of fruitful year 2015 SONSIK 12th EC wishes you all a very healthy, happy and prosperous Together we have worked hard to maintain a clear focus and productive vision for SONSIK for the last 11 years. Current progress has not come without a few bumps in the road, and the wisdom of our first committee members till 12th EC to work together couldn t be more appropriate today. The mission which began 11 years ago is still the goal today to share/strengthen the bond and knowledge between 600 fellow members around Korea. Furthermore, the goal is set a step ahead to make SONSIK the only intellectual organization where the policy maker can look up to. We have positioned ourselves for the bigger and better things for SONSIK by giving continuity to effective and necessary programs done by our past committee. Over the past years we have grown beyond Korean peninsula and our effort have not gone unnoticed. Keeping those in mind the 12th EC has come up with new ideas and approaches to transfer the technology to mother land through various activities. The 25th April 2015 natural disaster has made us more responsible toward mother nation. Therefore, the responsibility has been divided 1) toward Nepal, 2) toward SONSIK members. 1. We aim to serve mother through our approach to transfer the technology,providing scholarship to needed and through the school reconstruction programs. 2. Bonding the 600 fellow member s heart organizing interactive programs,sports activities,relaxing and calming the stress through meditation, keeping the database of every student, collecting constructive comments and suggestions and recording our SONSIK activities through the online base newsletter will be our Korea base responsibilities. We are here with the first volume of our e-newsletter that will update SONSIK activities and provide space for your creativity and logistic writing. At last No dreams are too big, No barrier should be insurmountable if we went out of our way to do something, imagine what the world would be like today. With high hope and determination. 6 Message From the Chair of Open University Task Force-NRNA In Search Of Destiny Dr. Pramod Dhakal Chair,Open University Task Force, NRNA Long ago, in Shravan 2035, I had left my home in Baglung to pursue higher education. All studies after Grade 10 were considered higher education those days and Tribhuvan University was the only higher education institution in Nepal. Kathmandu was then so far away that it had taken 3 days to reach there. We visited home no more than twice a year for travel was costly in terms of time and money. Study in Kathmandu was a great privilege for us. Our parents must have boasted that their son was studying in Kathmandu as today's parents boast about their sons and daughters studying in foreign countries. Even if my parents parents were not alive to know that I received United Nation's scholarship to study Engineering in IIT Roorkee, India, and in Canada after that, my scholarship was a matter of pride for my school and it inspired many prospective students of our villages. Considering that at least eight students of our school earned PhD after me. I can now say that one person's luck can become an inspiration for many people's success. But people and their perceptions change with time. "Time digests everything but nothing can digest time", said ancient Sanskrit scholars. As said, time has digested most of the people, values and culture we knew when we were children. Once again, the drive to succeed through education is almost died in my village now. Today's parents boast that their children are in America, Australia or Europe for residence, study or work. They treat it as a terrible mishap if they have to say that their grown-up children are studying or working in Kathmandu. Social prestige of scholarship to India's IIT ranks lower than American Diversity Visa, Australian Permanent Residency, or European Work Permit. All eyes are turning to the West and the East seems to have been overlooked. But that is also about to change. Time is digesting the beliefs of today as fast as the development gap between the East and the West is vanishing. Our perception of the East and the West are changing for a reason. Asian economies are roaring with remarkable pace. Innovation is mushrooming here. As per Bllomberg Innovation Index 2013, the United States, South Korea, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Japan and Singapore were respectively ranked as the seven most innovative countries in the world. South Korea and Japan rank as the top two countries in the world by number of patent applications made per capita. China has steadily climbed to claim the tenth position today. Considering Singapore and South Korea were notably poor in the early 1960s, this is a big change of fortune. No wonder, all perceptions about countries are changing once more. My short travel across South Korea in September 2015 involved a journey to the City of Daegu, home to many South Korean Universities where Nepalese students study in significant number. Nepalese scholars have also become faculty members in universities here. Interacting with about three dozen Nepali scholars in an interaction program on Open University of Nepal organized by Society of Nepalese Students in Korea (SONSIK), I was able to have a glimpse of the Nepali intellectual mass that is mushrooming in Korea. I was able to discover that hard working and ambitious Nepali youth are honing their skills in critical thinking, research and innovation here. They are building an intellectual powerhouse. For the fact that South Korea is is leading the world in per capita inventions, that is the place to be and this is the time to be there. I feel nothing but pride in knowing that they are experiencing the euphoria of the rising tide of intellectual development. Upon knowing that SONSIK12th Executive committee is releasing its first official publication, I feel wholly excited for the prospect of Nepali students in Korea. I express my best wishes for SONSIK with a contemplation that Nepal will one day reap the fruit of the intellectual wealth earned by this aspiring mass. Let there be a great future for you all and in it a great intellectual future of Nepal. Our best wishes!

7 WELCOMING NEW STUDENTS OF GYEONUGBUK/NAM-DO AREA SEPTEMBER 1, 2015 By Aarajana Shrestha (Joint Secretary, SONSIK 12th EC) Program was held in Yeungnam University to welcome new Nepalese students in Gyeonugbuk/nam-do area on Sunday, August 30, Total twelve new students attended from different universities around Daegu and Busan area. The main objective of this program was to introduce and counsel new students for their easy adaptation and safe and success stay in South Korea, told Mr. Mohan Shrestha who is Vice President of Society of Nepalese Students in Korea (SONSIK) Gyeonugbuk/nam-do area. Dr. Gyanendra Prasad Joshi (Assistant Professor, Yeungnam University), Dr. Madhu Sudan Atteraya (Assistant Professor, Keimyung University), Mrs. Indira Tiwari (President, SONSIK), Mr. Taraman Kadayat (Past President, SONSIK), Mr. Anup Shrestha (Past Vice President, SONSIK) advised new students to believe in unity and encouraged to be active in learning Korean Cultures for easy adaptation in South Korea. Also they suggested to make a good relationship with their Professors and introduced SONSIK as a society where Nepalese students share their knowledge and ideas. Moreover, they recommended to be curious about Korean Economic Success and Modern Technology Transfer for development of Nepal. They also wished to achieve their goals being honest and healthy.around sixty students and researchers participated in the welcome program. Mr. Anup Shrestha was also felicitated for his wonderful one year contribution to SONSIK.

9 SONSIK Farewell and Appreciation Ceremony 1st November 2015 SONSIK 12th Executive Committee organized farewell to the outgoing committee members organizing SONSIK Farewell Ceremony held at Nepal House on September 1st, Outgoing committee members were felicitated with Letter of Appreciation and token of love recognizing their handwork and dedication to strengthen the organization. Programme was successfully conducted where The Ambassador of Nepal to Republic of Korea Mr. Kaman Singh Lama was the Chief guest, Nepal Engineering Association(NEA) president Er. Dhurba Thapa along with NRN President Raju Chettri were special guest in the program.

10 Diwali Festival November 15, 2015 Dipawali Festival was successfully conducted. More than 300 Nepalese were being get-together celebrated Dipawali and enjoyed a lot with Tika and Bhaile. We SONSIK 12th committee would like to thank all friends and participates for their great contribution and valuable time in spite of busy schedule. 12 KAFF and ASCK Meeting ( 12th September, 2015) The meeting between the KAFF (Korean-Asian Friendship Foundation) and KISU (Korean International Student Union) held on 12th September, The meeting was held with participation of representatives for 10 different countries ( Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nepal, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Srilanka, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan) regarding the participation of these nations in Annual International Summer Workshop held on September 19th, Counseling and Cultural Exchange Program Busan Introduction of Nepali culture to Korean Grand mothers (Kangwondo, Samchoek)

13 Interactive program on Open University in Nepal Guest : Pramod Dhakal Venue: Youngnam University By Aarajana Shrestha (Joint Secretary, SONSIK 12th EC October 2, 2015 An interaction program about Open University with Dr. Pramod Dhakal (Chair, Open University Task Force, NRNA) was held in Yeungnam University on Sunday, September 20, Total thirty six participants including Nepalese students and professors attended from different universities of Gyeonugbuk/nam-do area. The main objective of the program was to introduce Open University and explain its opportunities, and challenges to establish in Nepal. In the first session, Dr. Dhakal illustrated the idea and need of Open University in Nepal. Then the first session was followed by group interaction between Dr. Dhakal and participants. Dr. Dhakal also told the progress of Open University which was initiated in Nepal 5 years ago. Dr. Granendra Prasad Joshi, Assistant Professor of Yeungnam University, thanked to Dr. Dhakal for sharing his experiences. Indira Tiwari, President of SONSIK 12th EC, also thanked to all the participants for attending the program despite the very short notice and assured that similar productive programs will be organized by SONSIK regularly throughout the Korea.

14 Participated in Culture Exchange and Sport SONSIK in 2015 International Students Network Workshop and KISU Open Festival The Asian Students in the Republic of Korea, gathered in occasion of Second General Executive committee Meeting of the Asian Students council in Korea (ASCK) held in Grand Meeting Room of the National Assembly Hall. During the second meeting Nepalese student s representative, SONSIK, was appointed as the new member of the ASCK. The announcement of new members of ASCK was done at International Students Network Summer Workshop and Festival Korea-Asia Friendship Foundation President, CHOI, Jaesung, (A member of National Assembly) distributed the appointment certificate to the member organization from different countries. The program was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and supervised by KAFF. SONSIK members participated in the soccer game and the cultural events held after the Meeting.
