Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? A new presidnt, and new year and everyone has high expectations for our club. I believe this is going to be a great year for us. Your board is in favor of holding Pau Hana meetings and our first one will be held at the Kona Brew Pub on Monday evening (August 29) at 6:00 PM. This will be our farewell sendoff for the GSE team form The Phillipines and all clubs in West Hawaii are invited to come and join in the fellowship. The Kona Club has given us some ideas that should make furure Pau Hana events fun and a great opportunity for all of us to get to know each other a bit better. We asked the staff at Teshima's to vary the menu to make our lunches a bit more healthy and they have responded. Many of you have commented on how much you appreciate the changes in the menu and I want you to know that if you want changes all you have to do is tell me and they will respond. Darlene and Tuula are working hard on a possible new fund raiser event for our club. We want to hold an Octoberfest on October 15th. We have reserved a venue and Tuula is working to put together an Umpah band. This should be one heck of a party and to pull it off we need your help. Anyone who would like to help on this program please plan to stay for a few minutes after the August 9 th meeting or contact Darlene or Tuula. This should be a lot more fun than work and I hope many of you will want to help. (AND... Is it Fun??) The GSE team will be visiting west Hawaii on the of this month. As part of their vocational visit I have scheduled a tour of the Coast View Aquaponic Operation. I know many of you would like to see this operation and the tour has been scheduled for 10AM on Monday the 29 th of August. We need to carpool due to limited parking so please let me know if you would like to join us on this tour. The team leader is an Oral Surgeon and will be visiting Dave Hiranaka s office based surgery center. We will meet our expectations for having fun while we help make this world a little better. Let's not be selfish. We need to share this fun with our frineds. Please invite a friend to one of our meetings. Future Pau Hana meetings will be pot luck and will present a great opportunity to introduce potential members to our club.

Siblings: older brother, Kenneth; younger, John Where do you live: Kona Coffee Villas, Kailua-Kona Where did you grow up: Lyons, Illinois (near West suburb of Chicago) Favorite things to do: Swim, camp, travel and attend the theatre Favorite Movie: Dr. Zhivago Occupation/Career: Certified Public Accountant Why do you like being in Rotary? I enjoy helping others and get satisfaction in knowing I have contributed to their life in some way. Who inspired you in your life: My mother. She was always there to support me in whatever I did, wherever I went and however I accomplished things (even when she didn't actually agree with me). She taught me to respect people, things and events as well as the common courtesies that are so often ignored today. Hobbies: scrapbooking, learning about other cultures Anything else you'd like to add about yourself? I drove and camped around the US for 5 years and met wonderful people everywhere who invited me into their homes and lives. I learned that no matter where you are, you can find goodness in the world by carrying it in your own heart. Favorite paraphrase: If God brought you to it, He will bring you through it. What is Rotary? How do you describe the organization called Rotary? There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as well as the activities of more than a million Rotarians. There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship, classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, the emphasis of high ethical standards, concern for other people, and many more. Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and helpbuild goodwill and peace in the world. Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, What is a Rotary club? You really can change the world if you care enough. 3 This Month s Activities Page 3 Group Study Exchange (GSE) This year s Group Study Exchange will be visiting from the Phillipines beginning August 27 30, While in Kona they will be participating in Vocational Visits, socials, and fun excursions. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet professionals from another country, learn about their way of doing business, and get to know their culture. We will be co-hosting a quad club social at the Kona Brew Pub on Monday, August 29 at 6:00 pm. This is such a nice opportunity to socialize with Rotarians from Kona, Kona Sunrise, and North Hawaii, along with the GSE members. The Rotary Foundation s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to four-week tour exchange visits in paired countries. Team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. Our exchange this year is with District 2450 in Egypt. Applicants participate in vocational visits, club presentations, formal visits, social events, the district conference, cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families. When you are on your travels and see the familiar Rotary wheel attached to a project take a picture (include yourself if possible)! We ll feature it in the club s newsletter. 4 August is Membership and Extension Month Page 4 New Approach Vital to Membership Growth Potential club members are everywhere. But to get them to join Rotary, clubs must use creativity and imagination, says Past RI President Cliff Dochterman. "Rotary International leaders keep emphasizing membership growth and extension because Rotary's very survival depends on it," says Dochterman, a member of the Rotary Club of Moraga, California, USA, and author of The ABCs of Rotary, a resource for new members. "If Rotary is to grow, we all must take action." Dochterman believes clubs can thrive by seeking new members, retaining current ones, and sponsoring new clubs in the community. He offers the following tips: Seeking new members Clubs must have a specific plan in place, says Dochterman. Use a team approach. Teams should have several members who meet with qualified business and professional leaders to discuss the benefits of joining Rotary. Set aside one club meeting per month to be a "visitor day," to which all club members would invite a friend or prospective member. Seek out natural prospects, including Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotaractors, and Group Study Exchange (GSE) team members. Retaining current members "Keeping current club members is just as important as bringing in new ones. The key is to adapt and change," says Dochterman. Make sure club meetings, service activities, and social events are interesting, fun, and worthwhile. Initiate more hands-on projects so club members will feel that they're making a difference. Eliminate 100 percent attendance requirements. Be alert to the symptoms that lead to resignation. Club leaders should be considerate to members' personal problems. Sponsoring a new club "Don't think about cloning your existing club. The new century of Rotary requires and permits a new vision of fellowship and service," says Dochterman. "It's time to think about sponsoring a new kind of Rotary club." For example: A club composed entirely of executives and professionals under the age of 40. The nucleus could be former Rotaractors, GSE team members, and Foundation program alumni. A club in an ethnic or minority section of the community, with members who share common economic and cultural interests. A club that meets in a shopping mall, airport, high-rise office building, golf course, or other nontraditional but convenient location.
