2 The National Strategies Caring Together The Carers Strategy for Scotland (we) are determined to ensure that carers are supported to manage their caring responsibilities with confidence and in good health, and to have a life of their own outside of caring. Getting it Right for Young Carers The Young Carers Strategy for Scotland The responsibilities of caring can deny a young person their rights and can compromise their safety

3 Caring Together The Carers Strategy for Scotland We recognise carers as equal partners in the delivery of care in Scotland and fully acknowledge carers expertise, knowledge and the quality of the care they give. With appropriate support, especially support delivered early to prevent crisis, caring need not have an adverse impact on carers.

4 Caring Together sets out 10 key actions to improve support to carers over the next three years. The focus is on: Improved identification of carers, Assessment, Information and advice, Health and wellbeing, Carer support, Participation and Partnership.

5 Getting it Right for Young Carers The Young Carers Strategy for Scotland we are committed to ensuring that young carers are relieved of inappropriate caring roles and are supported to be children and young people first and foremost. Young Carers can benefit from the caring contribution they make. It can provide them with personal skills and an important role in the family, which enables them to demonstrate their commitment and affection. However, the demands of caring can also be onerous and can have an adverse impact on young carers health and wellbeing.

6 Young Carers are very much a hidden population Estimate more than 100,000 young carers in Scotland but only 3,500 young carers are supported by dedicated young carers services. Many adverse effects which can impact on: Educational attendance Attainment Achievement and Ambition Physical, emotional and mental health Pyschological wellbeing Social contact and relationships Financial security and

7 in some extreme situations: Young Carers can experience Neglect and Abuse So we need to Get it Right for every Young Carer in Highland

16 Highland Carers Advocacy How do we work A Service supported by a centrally based Manager A team of locality based caseworkers covering - Caithness/Sutherland, Ross-shire, Inverness/Nairn, Lochaber, Badenoch & Strathspey, Skye Geography encourages smarter working skype/video conferencing The service is Independent Uses a person centred delivery Breadth of Issues encompass Education/ Housing/ Social Work/ Health service can identify and become a barometer for trends/early warnings

17 Carers Advocacy in Highland Essential support to Carers in vulnerable situations Advocacy supports Carers to be prepared and communicate effectively Caring can involve complex situations and several agencies advocacy supports a carer to identify and prioritise issues Potential conflict of interest between Carer and cared-for person Focus on outcomes/having voice heard/win-win A Stronger Voice contributes to improved lives
