Fellow Lions, Message From District Governor Lion Sam Wells We are already going into the 4 th month of the Lions year. How quickly time flies! We all have to be aware that this is a fact and that we should be ensuring that we are doing all that we can to make this year a great one for you and your clubs and for the District. We have a number of things that we should all be working on and you should be asking yourself: Have I asked someone to become a Lion today? Rememberthat for every new Lion we can service 50 more people? ASK ONE til you get one. Have you searched out an area that we could open a new Lions Club or a branch club? Have we reached out to nearby communities for new members? Consolidated communities can really work, but you have to reach out and Ask One. Have any of you looked at doing a Community Needs Assessment in your club? This could really help you decide what your community needs or what a nearby community may need. These are just a few things to think about I m sure you are all looking at these possibilities. As our International President s theme says, we Have New Mountains to Climb and we surely have right now in everything we do as Lions. We have be innovative to not only find new ways to increase our membership but we also have to find new ways to raise funds so that we can provide what we do best -service to our communities. We have to climb that mountain and search on the other side for great new ideas so that we can continue our legacy. It is our Centennial Year and LCI has come with a way for us to emphasize what we do as Lions. They have noted 4 categories where we can all make a difference if we take part. They are: ENGAGING YOUTH, PROTECTING THE ENVIROMENT, SHARING THE VISION, and RELIEVING HUNGER. Did you know you can get a banner patch when you do each one of these service projects? I m sure you are all doing them BUT are you reporting them? How many of you are sponsoring a youth group? How many of you are doing projects for the blind? How many of you contribute or help out at the food bank? How many of you have planted a tree in your community or are planning to plant one? I know you all are. Let s make sure we report them. I would love to see our district have a 100% participation in these service projects. How about a Legacy Project? Just erect a Lions Sign coming into your community, take a picture and send it to LCI. You could get a Legacy Reward, I know Lions Clubs across the District have parks, playgrounds and Lions Centres. Let s erect signs, get pictures, and send to LCI to be recognized for the great things you do. Remember my theme this year is BACK TO THE BASICS. It would be great to see Lions doing service projects in their VESTS! Let s get people talking and noticing what we do and just maybe they will become interested and just maybe we will get new LIONS. See you in Marystown! Yours in Lionism, Lion Sam Lion Sam Wells District Governor N4

Message From 1 st District Governor Lion Diane Bonnell Hello District N4, Are Lions our best kept secret? How many people around us know what we do with Lions Clubs? If we are going to attract and retain Members we need to become " Cheerleaders " for Lions Clubs. We need to support D.G. Lion Sam with his "Back to the basic" theme. We must wear our vest at club service projects, wear a Lions pin at work or wear a Lions shirt at other places than a Lions event. You will find that people will ask you about it. Do not think that most people know about Lions - they don't. Be ready to give a short speech about Lions and about why you became a member. Focus on the service projects we do, not the fund raisers. Give them an idea on what we do. If you speak on fundraisers, always say what the funds are used for. Lions Clubs do great service work in our local communities. It is the responsibility of the leadership along with the members to tell more people about Lions Club and what we do. Doing this helps Lions have more members and more members means more service that we can perform. I look forward to the upcoming Marystown Convention. Hope to see you there! Thank-you 1VDG Lion Diane Bonnell Fellow Lions, Message from 2nd Vice-District Governor Lion Jennifer Hutchings We are now into Fall and what a beautiful time of year! I ve been reading club activity reports. Most clubs have been busy in their communities. Please keep doing what you do to make a difference! I encourage clubs to report your activities to Lions International and if possible include a picture or two. Remember by submitting your reports online it is not necessary to forward to the District Executive, as we are able to go online and view your membership and activities. We need to get Back to the Basics and do projects in our own communities and remember to wear your vests to be noticed. I attended the Secretary Training in Clarenville on September 18 th and no matter how many times you have served as Secretary there is always something new to learn. I was disappointed with the number of Secretaries in attendance, but those who were there enjoyed the training and I m sure learned something new. Thanks to Lion Janine and her team for a fantastic day of training. Membership is down for the month of September. Let s all try to increase membership in this GREAT District! Why not invite a friend or family member to your next meeting? Looking forward to seeing you in Marystown, and remember the theme. I m sure there will be some fantastic outfits! Lion Jennifer 2nd Vice District Governor

Message from Global Leadership Chair Lion Janine Howse Fellow Lions, September was a busy month for your GLT! Training days were held for Zone Chairpersons and Club Secretaries. Both sessions were held at Riverside Elementary School in Clarenville. On behalf of the District and all Lions who attended, I wish to extend a huge thank you to Ms. Jill Monk (Assistant Principal), Lion Mary Felkar and Lions Janet and Paul Abbott, for making this happen! Each Lion attending had the use of a laptop, and the instructors used a smart board to deliver their sessions. This greatly assisted in the learning, especially as the skills required to navigate MyLCI were explored. During the Marystown Convention, one-on-one assistance will be available to all who have questions about MyLCI. Club secretaries are especially encouraged to attend. A Treasurer Training session is tentatively planned for Friday evening. As well your GLT and GMT are working on presenting several leadership forums throughout the year. Details of these forums will be presented at the Saturday General Session And, as always, please remember, your Global Leadership Team is ready, willing and able to offer any assistance required and to respond to your questions and concerns. Call, text and/or and we shall be there! Yours in Leadership, Lion Janine Howse GLT Chair Telephone: (H); jehowse@nl.rogers.com Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results. 7 From My Files on Leadership: Lion Herbert M. Burry, PCC ~~~ Leadership Qualities ~~~~ What are all the leadership qualities of a successful leader? Does creating a new leader is an important quality? Leadership can be defined as one's ability to get others to willingly follow. Every organization needs leaders at every level. Leaders can be found and nurtured if you look for the following character traits. A leader with vision has a clear, vivid picture of where to go, as well as a firm grasp on what success looks like and how to achieve it. But it s not enough to have a vision; leaders must also share it and act upon it. Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric Co., said, "Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision and relentlessly drive it to completion." A leader must be able to communicate his or her vision in terms that cause followers to buy into it. He or she must communicate clearly and passionately, as passion is contagious. A good leader must have the discipline to work toward his or her vision single-mindedly, as well as to direct his or her actions and those of the team toward the goal. Integrity is the integration of outward actions and inner values. A person of integrity is the same on the outside and on the inside. Honest dealings, predictable reactions, well-controlled emotions, and an absence of tantrums and harsh outbursts are all signs of integrity. A leader who is centered in integrity will be more approachable by followers. Dedication means spending whatever time or energy is necessary to accomplish the task at hand. A leader inspires dedication by example, doing whatever it takes to complete the next step toward the vision. Magnanimity means giving credit where it is due. A magnanimous leader ensures that credit for successes is spread as widely as possible throughout the company. A humble leader is not self-effacing but rather tries to elevate everyone. Leaders with humility also understand that their status does not make them a god. Mahatma Gandhi is a role model for Indian leaders, and he pursued a follower -centric leadership role. Creativity is the ability to think differently, to get outside of the box that constrains solutions. Creativity gives leaders the ability to see things that others have not seen and thus lead followers in new directions. The most important question that a leader can ask is, What if? Possibly the worst thing a leader can say is, I know this is a dumb question... Fairness means dealing with others consistently and justly. A leader must check all the facts and hear everyone out before passing judgment. He or she must avoid leaping to conclusions based on incomplete evidence. When people feel they that are being treated fairly, they reward a leader with loyalty and dedication. Assertiveness is not the same as aggressiveness. Rather, it is the ability to clearly state what one expects so that there will be no misunderstandings. A leader must be assertive to get the desired results. Along with assertiveness comes the responsibility to clearly understand what followers expect from their leader. Leadership Qualities continues on the following page.

From My Files on Leadership: Lion Herbert M. Burry, PCC ~~~ Leadership qualities ~~~~ (Continued from previous page) Many leaders have difficulty striking the right amount of assertiveness, according to a study in the February 2007 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, published by the APA (American Psychological Association). It seems that being underassertive or overassertive may be the most common weakness among aspiring leaders. A sense of humor is vital to relieve tension and boredom, as well as to defuse hostility. Effective leaders know how to use humor to energize followers. Humor is a form of power that provides some control over the work environment. And simply put, humor fosters good camaraderie. Intrinsic traits such as intelligence, good looks, height and so on are not necessary to become a leader. Anyone can cultivate the proper leadership traits. Message from Lion Beverley Penney Chair District Peace Poster Contest "A Celebrations of Peace" is the theme of the Peace Poster Contest. To all Clubs in District N-4, This is a reminder to get your Peace Poster information into all schools as soon as possible. This will give the students lots of time to work on their posters and not feel rushed. The postmark deadline to send your club s winning poster to me, your District Chair, is November 15, This is a very special project for all Lions Clubs,so please get as many students involved as possible. Promoting peace in our world is more critical than ever, and who better to promote it than our youth? Thank you, Lion Beverly Penney Box 7526 Clarenville NL A5A 3A1 Phone: rjpenney52@hotmail.com Share Peace Yumo Zhu, China Dalian Gao E Fu Lions Club

Ride to the Max The forty-five people who participated in the seventh annual RIDE TO THE MAX on August 20th were treated to great weather for their ride from the Goulds to Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp on the Bay D espoir highway, a return trip of approximately 800 kilometers. A couple of riders, Ron Pond of Glovertown and his brother Norm, from Ontario, started the ride at Signal Hill before joining the rest of the participants for breakfast at the Goulds Lions Club. The Alexander Bay Lions provided lunch at the Glovertown 50+ Club as the Lions building was booked for a wedding that day. Thanks are extended to the 50+ group for the use of their facility. On arrival at the Camp the riders were met by a lone rider from District N3, Bob Whelan from Stephenville. Many of the participants, including Bob, were at the Camp for the first time and all expressed their appreciation for our SPECIAL PLACE FOR SPECIAL PEOPLE. Everyone settled in for a night of fun and relaxation while competing for the various prizes donated by a number of businesses and individuals. Special thanks to the staff at the Camp for their fantastic hospitality and meals. When the sponsor sheets were tallied up a total of approximately $17,000 was raised towards the operating expenses of the Camp. Subsequent to the Ride it was learned that a group of bicyclists from the Port aux Basques area did their own Ride for the Max. For more information of this event please check out the news article on the Lions N4 web site. The eighth annual Ride is scheduled for the weekend of August 19th, Mark your calendar now for this fantastic weekend which benefits our great Camp. See you at the eighth Ride. 15 Torbay Lions Club Torbay Lions Club started their new year with a busy and informative Board Meeting on September 12 th. The Club started fundraising on Regatta Day selling tickets on an IceCaps Ultimate Package; the winner of that package was Karen Coultas of St. John s (ticket was drawn on September 25 th ). We participated in our first Purina Guide Dog Walk on September 25. It was a very nice turn out on a beautiful fall day. Lions Nancy Codner, Sylvain Gallant and Joan Jackson help with the Ticket Draw. Pouch Cove Lions Club The Pouch Cove Lions Club is off to a great start with our first dinner meeting featuring Barry Lewis Green "The Unity Guy" We brought the Pouch Cove Mayor, Councilors, Town Staff, Volunteer Fire Department and the Lions Club members together for a night of great food and camaraderie. Barry is widely known for his ability bring people of all ages together as a motivational speaker who inspires through laughter and simply enjoying the time you are together. Barry lead everyone through thought -provoking exercises which highlighted the reason we love our Town and back to the grass roots of why we volunteered - to serve the community and help others. He reminded us that everyone brings something different to the table and if we work together as a team, we will realize our goals. At the beginning of the night everyone was in their own little groups and unsure as to the reason they were there. By the end of the evening we were laughing sitting side by side with friends who shared a common goal and pledged to continue to work as a team to make our community great!
