3 International President From the Outback to Out and About in the World Barry J. Palmer, of Berowra, NSW, Australia, was elected president of Lions Clubs International at the association s 96th International Convention, held in Hamburg, Germany, July 5-9, President Palmer was a real estate company director. A member of the Hornsby Lions Club since 1976, President Palmer has held many offices within the association, including club president, zone chairperson, cabinet secretary, cabinet treasurer and district governor. He has served on numerous committees and as the Host Committee Chairperson for the 2010 Lions Clubs International Convention in Sydney, Australia. In recognition of his service to the association, President Palmer has received many awards, including the 100% Club President Award, the 100% District Governor Award, six International President s Medals and the Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest honor the association bestows upon its members. He is also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. In addition to his Lion activities, President Palmer is a recipient of the Australian Medal issued by the Australian Government, the Australian Childhood Cancer Research Award and the Spastic Centre of NSW Award. He was a Pioneer Volunteer at the Sydney Olympics and a member of the New South Wales Paralympic Committee. President Palmer and his wife Anne, also a Lion and a Melvin Jones Fellow, have three children and eight grandchildren. Some of the Dreams and Priorities of International President, Barry J. Recruit women members to reach the goal of 30% female membership by June 30, 2014, currently at 24.5% Internationally. Organize new clubs, striving for at least 25 charter members Organize new Leo clubs. Leos share the dream of service and they want to serve and make a difference Establish a new e-clubhouse web site for each new club. Increase the understanding of LCIF s programs and their impact. 4 District Governor s Message To: The Lions Family What should our goals be for the year ahead? The easiest thing for us to do would be to maintain the status quo: to follow the path that we have always followed. It won t take us to a new destination and it will not provide us with novel sights and sounds that inspire and awaken our senses. This path will not encourage growth or introduce us to new ways of thinking. But this old path is familiar. This well-trodden trail is comfortable and easy. It will allow us, without much thought or effort, to arrive safely at our destination, and for most people that is enough. Most prefer the familiar path and the comfort and ease associated with the status quo. But as Lions, it is our duty to blaze new trails, to discover new paths, to accept new challenges so that we may truly impact this world in a positive way. In essence, it is the responsibility of the Lion to dream. And when that is done we must, with dogged determination, chase those dreams. It is that pursuit which allows us to find new paths, new opportunities, new trails that will make the journey easier for those who travel with us. Magellan, Einstein, Guttenberg, Edison, the Wright Brothers and countless other visionaries changed the world by pursuing their dreams. Melvin Jones also changed the world. He did so by dreaming of the creation of a service organization that would improve the lives of people in need. He then set out to make that dream a reality and today that organization touches the lives of millions of people around the globe. We are Lions. We are the realization of that dream and it is our duty to move forward with the same vision, passion and creativity that Melvin Jones exhibited in My challenge to every Lion, Lioness and Leo in District N4 for the year ahead is to identify your personal dream and then chase it until it has been realized. As I write the inaugural message for our District Newsletter, I am proud to say that we have an excellent team of quality members ready to serve. This team is composed of Lions who will bring leadership, experience and vision to both our district and club levels. It is with this team that I believe we will fulfill our dreams in District N4 of renewed membership growth, the establishment of new clubs, and an increased female presence within our organization. Most importantly, I believe we will realize our dream of achieving an ever-increasing standard of service to those in need. One way we can advance our capacity for service is through effective public relations. We must connect with those around us by sharing stories of Lions projects and the positive impact they have on our society. Today each member can share the Lions story with passion and conviction via photos and video that can be uploaded to web and social media sites. We can reach the world with stories that inspire. Our district publicity chairperson will be only too pleased to spread the word about the great services that your clubs are providing. 5 District Governor s Message (continued from previous page) In my June 2014 Newsletter I will do an assessment of each of our district and club leaders. Between now and then it is your opportunity to keep chasing your dream and once realized to begin to dream again. On August 11, we had an excellent Cabinet meeting in Clarenville with 62 Lions in attendance. I want to thank Lion President Irene Dalton and the members of her club for being such great hosts. Our next district meeting will be at Marystown on October 18 th & 19 th. It is my dream that every club in our district will be represented there. Come and enjoy the fellowship, the fun and the sharing of ideas while, at the same time, let the true spirit of Lionism grow within us. At Clarenville, I asked every Lion in attendance to make a promise. That promise was to invite at least one new person to their respective Lions Club during the upcoming year. I am inviting every Lion in our district to make that same promise. LCI has many resources to help your club. One of these is a New Member Recruiting Guide entitled, Just Ask! Contact the Membership and New Club operations Department at memberops@lionsclubs.org In addition to bringing in new members to existing clubs we are also encouraging the formation of new clubs. Our districts GMT/GLT Committees will be planning an Extension Workshop for all interested Lions in the St. John s area. In the meantime, the St. John s Lions Club has initiated a drive to form a new club in the town of Paradise. If you would like to help them, you may contact PDG Lion Sam Wells. The Gander Lions Club has started the process of forming a new club in the Gander Bay area. Any Lion who would like to help them may contact Lion Heber Pike, Lion Don Stuckless or Lion Brent Peyton. We are also looking at the Norman s Cove-Long Harbour area for a new club. If you would like to offer your assistance in that area, please contact Zone Chair Lion Loretta Ryan or any member of the GMT/GLT Committee as listed in our District Directory. What should our goals be for the year ahead? Which path will the Lions of District N4 take? Will you be satisfied with the status quo or will you join with me on the path that leads to the realization of our dreams. By supporting and encouraging one another and by having every Lion play their part, we can make our community, our province, and our world, a better place. Keep chasing your dream and work hard to make it a reality. That effort will ensure a brighter future for your club, your district, LCI and all the people We Serve. 6 Message from 1st Vice District Governor Len Mooney Fellow Lions, I will be attending the USA/Canada Forum to hopefully learn some ideas that will help our district to grow and prosper I recently came across an article that talked about elephants and how elephants never forget. I learned a long time ago why elephants never forget.when elephants are first born and kept by an individual they place a strong chain around the elephants foot and he is not strong enough to lift that chain as he is too young and weak. That chain is kept around the elephant every night when he comes into rest after working all day. The elephant remembers how the chain was always there to keep him in place and not move around in any way and believes that no matter how hard he tries he will not be able to budge that chain and walk away. He never forgets that the chain keeps him in place. Remember how the elephant can lift all kinds of trees and move things much heavier than the little chain that is holding his foot. Let's talk about elephants... Is there an elephant in your club? Take a look at the following examples. You may recognize a nagging problem that's been taking up space in your club.this could be your elephant, in which case, you should talk with your Zone Chair or members of the Global Membership Team or Global Leadership Team Your GMT /GLT specialize in talking about the elephants that some club members may want to ignore. What's more,they don't just know how to talk about them.they can help you tackle them, manage them, and send them on their way. Some of your elephants could be... We may have to close the club as we can't afford to keep things going The repairs and the upkeep to the building are too much for us to handle We do not have enough members to do the project They never ask me to chair a project or to help in any way Our meetings are too long and discuss the same things every week A lot of our members are working away and don't help when they are here Nobody wants to volunteer How can you tell there's an elephant in your club?when there's a huge issue no one talks about --there's an elephant in your club. We all know it's there. We just pretend we don't see it. It's not easy. It takes a lot of effort to ignore an elephant We have the elephant hunters in the district waiting to hunt out the elephants and either destroy them or get them all working together on the same team heading in the right direction. 1st Vice-District District Governor Len s message continues on the following page. 7 Message from 1st Vice-District Governor Lion Len Mooney (continued from previous page) Our International President Barry Palmer has asked you to "Follow your dream " and our District Governor Harry Harding has as his theme this year " Chasing Dreams ". Each theme means something different to everyone but if we all follow and chase our dreams our world will be a lot better for it. Dr Wayne Dwyer advises " change the way you look at things and the things you look at change ". Only you can make the change you want in your life, your family,your club, your community. Dream about changes you want to see and they will happen Tell others about your dream and it may surprise you t o find out that he/she had the same dream. How much easier it is to do anything when you are working together towards a common dream! I dreamt that all clubs in District N4 qualified for a Club Excellence Award at the same time and made history. T Take notice as it has never been done. I look at all the things people from this province have done and I know it can be done but you have to see it, believe in it, and follow your dream. Have an excellent beginning to your Lions year and I hope to see you in Marystown. Lion Len Message from 2nd Vice-District Governor Lion Paul Abbott Thank you again for your confidence in me by your vote of support at our Gander convention. I PROMISE with your help and support of all the Lions in our district we together will build our district to higher levels. By now most clubs are back to their planning their Lion s year to help make their communities a better place to live and I wish all club the best and my support. DG Harry now has his team in place that will help him achieve his goals. Members of the team are all of us whether we serve as members of your clubs, zone or cabinet position we are all proud to be on his team. The International President s theme this year is FOLLOW YOUR DREAM and DG Harry theme is CHASING DREAMS together we can and we will make those dreams come true. 8 CABINET SECRETARY-TREASURER NOTES CST Lion Herb Burry Well, we've made it through the first two months of this Lions Year. The District Cabinet Meeting in Clarenville went well, and I want to thank all of the clubs who attended. We have been working diligently and are well on our way planning DG Harry s year. The level of detail encompassed in the planning process, while not a surprise, is daunting. I have been overwhelmed by the level of support and help I received from PCST Pat Bursey, IPCST Jennifer Hutchings, PDG Frank Antle, PDG Joan Forward and Lion Claudette Coombs. Lions are most successful when helping each other working together as a pride. I look forward to continue working with everyone to help make DG Harry s year a great success. There are several items which I would like to bring to your attention: District Dues - Invoices for District Dues have been prepared and were available at the Cabinet Meeting in Clarenville for the First Half of the year. Zone Chairs took responsibility for delivering correspondence (District Directories and Invoices) to any Clubs not represented in Clarenville. Please pay upon receipt of the bill the dues for your members. The District relies on each club paying their dues on time to run the District. Each club is billed twice a year. Monthly Reports Each Club is required to report its Monthly Membership and Monthly Activities Report to Lions Clubs International. Please ensure that the District Governor, 1 st Vice District Governor, 2 nd Vice District Governor, Zone Chairs and CST are provided with this information as well. To date, many Clubs have not reported anything. Never hesitate in calling me for help. We will learn this process together. DG Visitations The District Governor is required to make at least one visitation to each Club. Please ensure that you notify him when it is convenient for him to attend. This is your opportunity to meet the DG and discuss any items unique to your club. Plan early and you will not be disappointed. The Governor puts a great deal of time and effort into heading up our District and deserves our support. 10 Message from Lion Diane Bonnell District Chair Cultural and Community Activities Community and Cultural Activities Award This annual award recognizes one club within the district that has been the most active in organizing successful community cultural activities. All clubs are eligible to participate. Criteria Lions clubs considered for this award shall be judged for the success in organizing community and cultural activities according to the following criteria: SERVICE TO OTHERS: A Lion s club s cultural & community activities shall be developed, organized and implemented to provide benefit to people in terms of knowledge, attitudes, values, skills, or mutual understanding & cooperation. INVOLVEMENT: Activities shall be developed, organized and implemented to fulfill thr Third Lions Object, To take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community. ORIGINALITY: This category challenges Lions Club to develop cultural & community activities that are fresh, new & exciting in ways that draw the community interest and participation of members. OUTCOMES: Activities shall be developed & organized to improve the quality of life in measurable ways. PUBLIC RELATIONS: This category challenges Lions clubs to enhance their public image by publicizing their cultural & community activities through the news media and other avenues. 12 MEMO TO: Lions of District N4 RE: FROM: Marystown Convention October 18 & 19, 2013, Marystown Lion Geoff Lomond, Convention Chairman The Convention will be held at Hotel Marystown where we have 100 rooms booked. The cost of each room is $99.00 plus tax, per night. Rooms will be allocated as per the district policy. Any district officer requiring a room must book before Sept.22, After this date, all rooms for district officers will be on a first come, first serve basis. Rooms will be held for clubs until Sept. 25, After this date, everyone is on a first come, first served, basis. Again this year, we are asking Lions to book through the hotel. No deposit will be required but a credit card number must be given. Lions are asked to book by phone, , or by fax, , or by at reserve@marystownhotel.com In order to ensure that a room will be available to each club and district officer, no club will be able to book more than one room initially. A club(s) may make a request, but additional rooms will only be given after the deadline, Sept. 25, 2013, has passed. The onus will be on the clubs to check back after the deadline. A list of clubs and district officers will be provided to the hotel. Any district officers needing rooms for meetings, tables for display, etc. should contact me in advance, preferably by . We anticipate the usual good representation of Lions and will try to provide all the services required to make the weekend a success. 13 Ride to the Max! The fourth annual Ride to the Max was held on the weekend of August 17 when 31 Lions and friends travelled from the Goulds Lions Club to the Lion Max Simms Camp for Special Needs People. Most were on Motorcycles with a few in cars. The weatherman cooperated with beautiful weather for the trip out and the return trip on Sunday. Special thanks to the Goulds Lions Club and the Pouch Cove Lions Club for providing breakfast on Saturday morning. The two wheelers, three wheelers and four wheelers had a great ride to the Camp with a lunch stop in Gander. At the Camp, sponsor sheets were tallied and money collected. The top three fundraisers were Rick Brown, Doug Evely and Ron Pond. After a delicious supper, the fun started with a casino night. This was followed by prizes and an auction. When the final tally was done, the bikers and their friends contributed $10,180 to the Camp for the benefit of the Special Needs people who use the Lion Max Simms Camp. A couple of donations received after the Ride boosted our total to over our original goal of $10,000. Well done Lions and Friends. A new Ride Logo was unveiled during the weekend, designed by Lion Rick Brown and the Sign Factory, the logo incorporates the Lions motto, Lions Logo, and a Lion riding a motor cycle. Lion Rick had some T-shirts made sporting the new logo, these were sold during the weekend and the total receipts donated to the Ride. Special thanks to Lions Rick and Lillian. The date for the 2014 Ride has already been booked, so mark the weekend of August 23, 2014 on your calendar. 14 Message from District Alert Chairperson Lion June Petten Fellow Lions! My dream for this Lions year is to have a Regional Alert Team in each Zone and an Alert Team in at least 25 clubs when we walk into the Gander Convention. Many of our clubs already do the work of an alert team, for years the Lions have been helping out durng emergencies in our communities. I am asking you now that we help others not as people but as Lions. I am hoping to be able to explain this further if I can get a few minutes to speak at the Zone Chairperson's meeting in Marystown. I am asking the Zone Chairs to bring along to Marystown the name of one Lion in their Zone who will serve on the N4 District Alert Committee. Lets spread out Lionism and submit the name of a Lion not already involved on the District level. I am looking for Lions who are used to working as a team player so that we can complete the four steps from LCI. 1. Organize a Lions Alert Committee 2. Develop an emergency plan. 3. Communicate effectively during a crisis 4. Communicate with Lions Clubs International Having an alert team in your club is also a very good way to recruit new members. I'll also explain this further at the Convention. 15 Message from Constitution & By Laws Committee Committee Goal: The primary goal of the C & BL Committee is to produce and maintain a user-friendly resource which guides the smooth operation of District N4, and its Clubs, in efficiently and effectively providing humanitarian service. Two steps toward achieving this goal are: 1. To produce a comprehensive, accessible guideline document. DONE. The document will be available to all Clubs on a CD, at the Marystown convention, in addition to being on-line. Although it will be continuously updated to better serve the District s changing needs and operational conditions, this comprehensive reference manual is a reasonable resource for use by District officers and all Lions. 2. To enable a communication process which enhances internal interactions. DONE. The District website has new features and ALL District officers and Clubs are offered a permanent and consistent means of communicating. By availing of District , District Offices and Lions Clubs will have a permanent address, no matter which Lion fills the positions. Lions will know how to reach any District officer or how to communicate with Clubs in the District. How to use your District ... First, obtain your address and password from the District Information Technology Chair Danny Campbell at: itchair@lionsn4.ca Then, go to the District website At the bottom right corner of the home page, there are two tiny red boxes. Click on the first one to access your unique location. A new page will open where you enter your username ( address) and your password. Then click on the SUBMIT button and your will open. It may take a little practice to become comfortable with the look of the site, however it performs the same functions as your personal . Check it out! How to use your District Policy Manual... Go to the District website and on the home page, click on PUBLICATIONS, in the horizontal bar at the bottom of the yellow heading. This will bring you to a page with a variety of publications, including the Policy Manual. Look through the Table of Contents to find the location of the information you want. Because of its size, the Manual will remain in two parts. Part A includes the organizational details while Part B includes specific information on Awards. Browse through all headings to learn more and better understand the operations of LCI and your District; and, to recommend changes or additions that will improve the Policy Manual s usefulness for Lions. Our C & BL Committee has undergone changes over the summer. PDG Frank Antle is now chairing the Budget and Audit Committee and PDG Gerald Hutchings is the Interim Chair of the Lions Quest Foundation of Newfoundland & Labrador.
