The beginning of each year is a great time to review our accomplishments for the past year and look ahead, set goals, and begin a new journey. The last year has brought a change in leadership and an opportunity for renewed energy and growth to our chapter. This year we carry that energy forward. Last year s successes included our annual educational retreat in Bar Harbor, where we had 60 therapists attending. In November over 50 members attended the Body World s with Jeff Mahadeen at the Science Center in Portland. Thank you all for participating in these educational events. Jeannine Foster led a resurgence of our sports massage team with participation in the Maine Marathon. Our first Meet and Greet was a success with 20 members and guest attending. It is always nice to get to know more members. Our chapter is growing, we have new members each month, and it is so important for us to meet and support one another in our profession. We set our goals in the life areas of health, relationships, career, and finances. One good way to ensure abundance in all these areas is through gratitude and service to others. The members of our board and committees who have served over the last year have dedicated themselves to your service. They have pulled together to create excellent educational and service opportunities for us. So I start my year by saying thank you to all those who have served us during the last year on the board, as delegates, as local and national committee members, and as contributors to our newsletter and trainings. This includes the education committee members, sports massage team members, and the New England Regional Conference local committee members. Special thanks go to Dale Albert, Wendy Coffin, Mary Craven, Jeannine Foster, Kelly La Croix, Wendy Lessard, Mary Maverick, Jennifer Polley, Emily Rice, Robin Rand, Amy Rolnick, and Michael Whitely who have attended and participated in board meetings. 4 (Continued from page 1) Most of all thank you to all our AMTA members for continuing to be a part of this wonderful organization which supports us and our profession through education, legislation, research, scholarships, and insurance. Massage therapists throughout the country benefit from the efforts of our organization. Setting goals and looking ahead for 2016, our volunteers are busy planning several events for us. The first was on Jan 24 the sports massage meeting and training. There is the opportunity for therapists to participate in nine sports massage team events this year. Please see the listings on our website and contact Jeannine Foster to participate. The first event will be March 19, Maine Adaptive Skiing at Sunday River. The annual meeting is coming up on Sunday April 3 rd and our presenter will be Dr. Ben Benjamin teaching advanced neuromuscular techniques. It will be held in Waterville at T & B Celebrations. We are honored to have such a notable teacher with us. Please plan to attend. I look forward to having more social events like the Meet and Greet we held in Dec. If you would like to host an event in your area, please contact me. I am envisioning one in every county. Our goal is to have at least 3 education classes this year. I would love to see 100 members attending our next retreat. So set your goals to attend classes, meet other members, massage an athlete, join a committee, write an article for the newsletter for website, work on our website, or participate in a way that suits your talents and be of service to others. If you have a talent you would like to share, please contact us and we will find a way for you to share it with the members. Until we meet again have a safe and prosperous new year! Anita DeVito Volunteering for Our Chapter Are You Interested in Being a Board Member or a Delegate? Giving a few hours of your time and talent is a good way to give back to members and a great way to meet members, make friends, learn new skills, and be involved in the AMTA at an organizational level. To get more of a feel for what we do, you can read the minutes of the board meetings which are posted on our website at uploads/2015_1121_bod_meeting_agenda2.pdf This year at our Annual Meeting on April 3 we will be electing 4 members to our Board of Directors and 1 Delegate to serve with Mary Craven in the House of Delegates at the National Convention in Milwaukee, WI in October. President, 2 nd Vice President and Secretary are elected positions for 2 year terms the 3 rd Vice President and Treasurer will be elected for a 1 year term due to resignations. 5 Mark your Calendars 2016 February 21 Board Meeting-Budget-Phone April 3rd Annual Meeting and Educational Event October National Convention Milwaukee WI 2016 International Massage Therapy Research Conference -The Massage Therapy Foundation (MTF) is proud to host the 2016 International Massage Therapy Research Conference (IMTRC) which will take place May 12-15, 2016, at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel in Seattle, Washington. This is the fourth research conference hosted by the Massage Therapy Foundation, which brings together massage and manual therapy practitioners, educators, CIM researchers, and allied health professionals. We are pleased to offer massage therapy students and practioners a variety of opportunities to advance their skills with our contest and grant programs. Do not delay deadlines are approaching quickly in Research Grants Awards are up to $30,000. Deadline: March 1, Community Service Grants Awards up to $5,000. Deadline: April 1, Practitioner and Student case Report Contest Student Case Reports Deadline: June 1, 2016, Practioner Case Reports Deadline: October 3, The Sports Massage team is back in full effect for 2016! We had over 20 people attend our meeting and training, both returning members and newbies. This year is going to be great fun! Team members must be current AMTA members with current ME license and have experience/training in sports massage. CPR/1st Aid certification is strong- ly encouraged. 6 On Being a Volunteer By Amy Rolnick, LMT Connection, enrichment, satisfaction, growth, education, friendship, pride These are words I associate with volunteering. Very little time has passed in my life where I was not a volunteer for something. Being involved has always been a way for me to meet people and to contribute. For me, giving of myself in this way feeds my soul. Perhaps it is akin to many random acts of kindness where you don't expect in return, but you feel good giving and that is the return. Or perhaps it is just having your finger on the pulse of something you believe in. Since 2008 when I raised my hand at the annual meeting to become the Chapter Treasurer, I have met the most amazing and dedicated people. I have enjoyed many good times, connecting and working together for a common purpose. I feel good that I have made a difference in something I care about. I served on the Board as Chapter Treasurer for 5 years and subsequently took on the role of membership chairperson. All of it has been a most enriching experience for so many reasons. I learned leadership skills, honed my public speaking skills, traveled to National meetings, met countless members, and made many good friends. Volunteering for the chapter has been a wonderful experience. Soon I will be stepping down as Membership Chairperson to spend more time focusing on the other many things in my life. I am proud to have served the Maine Chapter membership for many years and will miss being an integral part of a group that is making a difference for our profession. And, I know that I can pitch in or rejoin in a leadership capacity at any time and be rewarded by the giving of my time and talent. Raise your hand, become involved, and reap the rewards!
