You will stay on the university campus and get a first idea about British student life. The stay will be in July before the end of term.

About Norwich In medieval times, Norwich was one of the greatest cities in England, and today as East Anglia s capital city, it still is as it offers a mixture of historic and modern sights. Set in magnificent countryside, close to the Norfolk Broads and some of the UK s most breath-taking coastline, Norwich has a university, two cathedrals, a castle, a 6-day open-air market, art galleries, museums, cinemas and theatres, as well as a lively city centre with a wide range of shops, two modern shopping malls and pubs and restaurants. The centre of Norwich is dominated by its magnificent 900 year-old Norman cathedral, which boasts the largest monastic cloisters in England, the second largest spire and over 1,000 beautiful medieval roof bosses. The present structure of Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery has stood since the 12th century and is one of the finest Norman secular buildings anywhere in Europe. Norwich has excellent rail and bus links with London and the major airports.

4 BOS Sozialwesen - Wirtschaft Details Details Details! How to get there A flight will be booked from Munich Airport to London. Then we will travel from London to Norwich by National Express. Where to stay? Residential accommodation at the University of East Anglia, Norwich The accommodation is self-catering and everybody has a single study bedroom with its own shower room and toilet. The rooms are arranged in houses of 8 or 10 with each house offering a fully equipped kitchen for shared use. Food and meals are included in the costs and together with the teacher a plan for cooking and food-shopping will be organised. There is a small supermarket on the campus and a large one nearby. Bed linen and towels are provided and are changed once a week. The room is cleaned weekly. A room will cost per night per pupil (included in the fee of 1200 ).

6 BOS Sozialwesen - Wirtschaft Placements at a glance St. Giles Nursery School Situated in the city centre (St Giles Street) this private nursery offers children and toddlers early childhood education. Working hours are from 9 am to 4 pm. The nursery offers two placements. Volunteers are asked to help the staff with child care, to play games and involve themselves in the daily childcare routines.

7 BOS Sozialwesen - Wirtschaft Salvation Army: Norwich Pottergate ARC Pottergate ARC, run by The Salvation Army, is a professional Day, Advice and Refreshment Centre for the homeless and disadvantaged. They offer two placements. Volunteers will be asked to help during the meals and to be open for a chat with our clients. The centre is run by a friendly group of staff and volunteers. Advice is offered informally, no appointment is necessary. Staff are always available for a friendly chat and can give help and information on a variety of issues or to give directions to other services. Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to use the centre once a day to get basic food, shelter and clothing in a safe environment. Clients can also get access to other voluntary agencies who can offer practical and relevant support. Refreshments are available throughout the day. Clients are encouraged to help themselves to drinks and soups. A choice of sandwiches are on offer, and other food subject to availability. Hot showers and toiletries are offered during opening hours. A small selection of emergency clothing is available. Sleeping bags and blankets are handed out to anyone sleeping rough. Mind/Omnia Mind is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales working to create a better life for everyone with experience of mental distress. Mental health problems can affect anyone, rich or poor, young or old, shattering the lives of those affected and the lives of the people close to them. One in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our lives. The Mind care home in Norwich is called Omnia. Omnia is a residential rehabilitation programme for people with severe and enduring mental health problems offering a safe relaxed environment In-house programmes aim at improving life skills and building resilience to stress. There is twenty-four hour support from a committed and experienced team, who will work along-side

8 BOS Sozialwesen - Wirtschaft other care providers. Omnia offers a placements for up to two volunteers to help with daily work (18+). Each volunteer will be supervised by one of the staff members. Visit their site to find out more: The Hamlet Centre Trust This institution was founded in 1972, first as a children's toy library, by Jack and Margaret Wymer who were severely disabled. They were convinced that, with the right support, people with disabilities could achieve a good quality of life. All the staff at the Hamlet Trust aim "... to provide high quality services for the relief of young adults with multiple disabilities in Norfolk. A wide range of activities such as creative arts, swimming and excursions are offered. Some outstanding pieces of art are annually exhibited at the Forum in the city centre. Support for the

9 BOS Sozialwesen - Wirtschaft families who have to cope with caring for special needs relatives are also priorities. The Hamlet Trust offers two placements for confident and experienced pupils (18+). Visit their site to find out more: The Norwich Puppet Theatre In addition to creating and producing their own puppetry, the Theatre hosts a variety of touring puppet companies from Britain and overseas, featuring the best of British and international theatre of animation for all ages. They also offer craft-based workshops for children and adults and work with schools across Norfolk and Suffolk providing performances, craft-based workshops and puppetry talks/demonstrations in schools and at the Theatre. The theatre offers one placement to help the General Manager with office work but also with demonstrations and talks at schools. Visit their site to find out more about what s on:

10 BOS Sozialwesen - Wirtschaft The Maddermarket Theatre A small but unique private theatre in the centre of Norwich staging a wide range of their own company productions and of visiting theatre companies. One placement is offered to help the Wardrobe mistress with altering and sewing costumes and to assist with stage adaptations. Visit their site to find out more about what s on: The Norwich Arts Centre Norwich Arts Centre is a small, independently run venue with charitable status situated close to the centre of Norwich. The centre aims to offer a broad range of performances and media arts of the highest quality to the community, together with a programme of participatory workshops and activities. 11 BOS Sozialwesen - Wirtschaft Waterstones Waterstones, one of the leading book retailers in Britain (296 stores in the UK and Europe with a staff of 4,500), has a big bookshop in Castle Street, right in the centre of Norwich, as well as a small one on the campus of the UEA. People are invited to browse among the books, and to attend book presentation and signing events. The store in town offers two placements to assist staff members and customers in the shop and in the small café. Visit their site to find out more about what's on:

12 BOS Sozialwesen - Wirtschaft Jarrolds Jarrolds in the centre of Norwich is one of the prizewinning independent department stores in the UK. On its five floors it offers beauty and fashion brands as well as furniture, homeware, books and stationary plus restaurants and a coffee bar. The store provides two placements. Cathedral of St. John --- new ---- The Cathedral of St John the Baptist is Norwich s Catholic Cathedral, but its doors are open to all people from any and no faith. The Cathedral Narthex provides a range of visitor facilities, including The Garden Café and the Cathedral Shop. There are many ways to get involved and to give of your time and talents there. Volunteers are required throughout the summer period to meet, greet and help the many visitors to the Cathedral. With the support of pre-prepared notes, a little training and assistance from experienced guides you can be the face of the Cathedral helping people to understand the building and culture. The Garden Café at the Narthex is a lovely spot for visitors to relax and unwind over morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Under the guidance of the Catering Manager, volunteers help with service and general kitchen assistance. It is also a great way to meet staff, other volunteers and members of the public. Ever wanted to work in a shop? The Cathedral shop stocks a wonderful range of cards, gifts and fair trade items. And last but not least, there is always an
