5 DAVID LYNCH FOUNDATION Soldiers returning from combat in Afghanistan and Iraq and their families, as well as underserved youth living in violence and poverty, often suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), called the black death of the 21st century. This living nightmare fuels violent, impulsive behavior; substance abuse; acute anxiety; manic depression; the inability to hold a job or stay in school; frayed family relations; and homelessness. In fact, more soldiers commit suicide each day than die in combat. Hundreds of thousands of scholarships The David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, a 501(c)(3) organization, has been a global leader in the fight against PTSD since The Foundation has provided scholarships for hundreds of thousands of at-risk youth, veterans and their families, and other underserved populations to learn the stress-reducing, health-promoting Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique. Support from the public and private sectors The effectiveness of the TM technique has been documented at top medical schools, including UCLA, Stanford, Harvard, and Yale, and has received endorsements and support from private foundations and government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, the General Motors Foundation, the Chrysler Foundation, the Kellogg Foundation, top veteran service organizations and military leaders, multiple school districts, and state departments of corrections. To learn more, go to
6 DAVID LYNCH FOUNDATION ADVISORS As a heart surgeon, I see the effects of stress on the heart. We believe TM can help a lot of people. That s why it s important to understand exactly how effectively this meditation reduces stress and stress-related disorders. Mehmet Oz, M.D., 3-year meditator When you consider the anxieties of combat that our men and women of the Armed Forces endure, then it s clear that TM is a great tool for them. Clint Eastwood, 40-year meditator I want to offer my support and encouragement in these efforts to help children and veterans, and anyone who needs the help to overcome stress through meditation. Martin Scorsese, 2-year meditator I ve been practicing Transcendental Meditation most of my life. I think it does something good to your nervous system. It has given me a calmness I don t think I had at 19. Jerry Seinfeld, 41-year meditator It s a hard thing to describe, but I find that my thought is clearer since I started meditating. I still get mad. I still get upset. But I let it go more quickly. Candy Crowley, 3-year meditator
7 AN EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH More than 320 studies conducted at independent medical schools and universities and published in peer-reviewed, scientific journals, including the American Medical Association s Archives of Internal Medicine, the American Heart Association s Stroke and Hypertension $26 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute Research results for heart health include reduced hypertension, cholesterol, atherosclerosis, heart disease, stroke, and mortality rates due to all causes MEDITATING VETERANS WITH PTSD A 50% reduction in symptoms of PTSD Reduced psychosocial symptoms of anxiety and depression Reduced insomnia Balanced serotonin and norepinephrine levels A regulated sympathetic nervous system MEDITATING YOUTH WITH PTSD Higher scores on intelligence tests Improved test scores Reduced ADHD and other learning disorders Reduced stress levels, anxiety, depression, violence Reduced substance abuse Reduced absenteeism, dropout rates, suspensions, expulsions Higher graduation rates
