4 Director s Corner By Greg and Candice Brown, Chapter Directors one two-hour and one four-hour, during the Rally in the Valley April, 1 st in Laughlin. Dave and I have been coordinating on two great rides, so let s really support our friends from California. Again, thanks for your support, and best of all the new friends we have made. Remember, Hello Oatie members. Well have we been having some great turnouts. February had 14 riders at our Chapter Breakfast ride and a record number of 22 for our Monthly Chapter Dinner. March s Monthly Gathering had 16 riders. It has been great to see some of the Havasu folks participate, all the snowbirds here and participating, and the weather starting to cooperating. This is your Chapter and the Chapter FUN can only be enjoyed and experienced if you participate and you certainly are doing that. I thank you for your support, at a time I needed the most. But, we still have a lot more events and riding coming up. Many of the Chapter fund raisers are starting, Rally in the Valley, OUR FUND RAISER IS GETTING VERY CLOSE SATURDAY APRIL 8 TH, 40 to Phoenix, River Run, Region F Rally, Wing Ding, Jack Ass Poker Run, and then AZ District Conventions. It s amazing at all GWRRA membership has to offer. Please see the Event Flyers and calendar at the end of the newsletter for registration forms, announcements, and details. Oh, did I mention our Fund Raiser on April 8 th? One other upcoming event that needs emphasis. We are honored that we have been asked by Chapter CA-R to host two rides

6 You get your kicks with AZO on Route 66! Rider Educator Corner Submitted by Joe and Judy Pirillo Iowa Senior District Educators The Power of the Wave One of the first words we learn as a baby is HELLO, which is one of the most powerful and rewarding words. It is definitely better than saying goodbye. Saying HELLO to someone when you first meet them immediately puts them at ease and you start a conversation on a most friendly word. What does saying HELLO have to do with riding motorcycles and riding them safely? Well, let s look at this just a little deeper. First, let s agree that a FRIENDLY WAVE is the same thing as saying HELLO. It seems to me one of the first things we learn when we start riding with GWRRA, next to food and ice cream, is that the members are one of the most FUN loving, patriotic, hugging and WAVING group you will ever to know. When out riding, a friendly WAVE to other motorcycles is letting them know we both enjoy the same thing. When we extend a friendly WAVE to other road users, including pedestrians, it makes them notice us. That s exactly what we want, to SEE and be SEEN. It also lets the recipients of our WAVE know that we are a friendly group and enjoy people. A WAVE to a child is worth gold. They will
7 notice, wave back and tell their parents so now the adults are aware of our presence. We have been SEEN. Oh, nuts, that person didn t WAVE back so I m not going to WAVE anymore. NO NO NO keep WAVING as not only do you want the person to whom you WAVED to notice but also the tons of other observers out there as once again we want to be SEEN. Friendliness is so rare nowadays; it s disarming, so use the WAVE to let people know that we are FRIENDS out having FUN. Respect begets respect and a WAVE will help you start a lot of conversations on your outing. You never know, you may meet the same person you just waved to at your next stop. The simple WAVE can be our first step on being noticed on the roadways. Join us and start WAVING even more than you do now. Not only will you see a lot of people smiling at you, the WAVE will put you and your co-rider in a very happy frame of mind. Just try it, you may like it. Use the Power WAVE Motor Awareness Request GWRRA FRIENDS, I NEED YOUR HELP! As a fundraiser for the GWRRA Motorist Awareness Program, I am planning to raffle off a quilt at Wing Ding 40. It will be made from the Wing Ding emblems from t-shirts from Wing Ding rallies past. This is where I need your help. I need at least twenty-five (25) Wing Ding t-shirts, preferably from 25 different Wing Ding rallies. Color and size does not matter. And I may need to use some duplicates. But ideally the emblems have good color. I currently have shirts from Wing Ding 25, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 36, 37, 38. The WD-39 t- shirt is ordered, and since it is for the 40 th anniversary, it will be the center of the quilt. As you can see, I particularly need the older shirts. If you have one or two that you can part with, I will be very grateful. You folks in Region F un can bring them to the Motorist Awareness table at the Region Rally in Tucson (or send them with someone if you can t attend). Or mail them to me at N 29 th Ave Lot 389, Phoenix, AZ Thank you in advance for your support of the Motorist Awareness Program! Char and Cliff Simpson Motorist Awareness Officers, Region F
8 TOURING ARIZONA PHOTO TOUR WHAT IS TOURING ARIZONA? Touring Arizona is a photo tour of various places around Arizona, a magnificent State to tour and one full of surprising wonders. For each place you visit, take a photo of yourself and your motorcycle*. Each photo counts as points on the tour and you will receive hangar bars to add to your pin. * We realize there are some places you cannot take your bike into, or occasions when there is no one to take your photo. We will accommodate those incidents. Just let us know. Please be honest about your photos and visits. WHAT IS THE TOURING ARIZONA PIN? A beautifully engraved 1 x 2 pin with the label AZ-District, Touring Arizona surrounding the Arizona District symbol. Hangar bars come with each area of the State you complete points for. WHAT ARE THE LOCATIONS IN ARIZONA WE HAVE TO VISIT? The points of interest (POI) are organized into five (5) geographical regions; Colorado Plateau, Central Arizona, IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS: WW [Bill] Trask Bev Cameron wwtrask@gmail.com bevacameron@gmail.com Southern Arizona, Arizona Route 66, and Border to Border region covering the outer corners of the state. There are 125 Points of Interest included in Touring Arizona. You need to send at least fifteen (15) photographs from an Area to receive the hangar bar for it. Send them as a group or one at a time, however you wish. WHAT KIND OF PHOTOS DO I NEED TO TAKE? Photos must be taken after you start the program, so take the time to re-visit some stops you've already seen. We will not credit any photos dated prior to your sign up. Photos must be digital ( kb) or in print format. If you can include the date & time that is better; otherwise let us know when you were there. WHAT IF I VE ALREADY BEEN THERE & DONE THAT? Well, maybe it s time to do it again. We like to say it s the voyage, not only the destination, which makes riding your motorcycle such a delight. Chapters are encouraged to take part in the program by recognizing rider accomplishments in articles and during monthly meetings. They are also encouraged to include these POI s in ride planning. Chapter recognition for the most POI s visited by chapter members will be recognized by the Arizona District. We will track and report member participation to the Arizona District Director for further recognition. NOTE: Although this is a GWRRA program you do not have to ride a Gold Wing. You do need to have a GWRRA membership, either as a Member, a Family Member, or an Associate Member. See Bill Trask for more details. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST AND WHY SHOULD I BOTHER? The cost is $10 per person, for which you will receive the Touring Arizona pin, and the rights to each of the five hangar bars for the areas of the State. Not only will you get a beautiful, unique pin for your vest, but as you add more hangar bars you gain bragging rights and perhaps the chance to talk to others about some great places to visit. For more information, registrations, maps, etc. visit the Touring Arizona page at the AZ District website:
