We will have therapists on the day offering massage, reflexology, pilates and heartfullness with good conversation! Unpaid carers and family of anyone who has had an ABI are welcome. This is a great chance to meet others in a similar situation or just take some time out for you. Please let the office know if you plan to come along by Friday 2 nd September 2016 so we can make sure there are enough therapists on hand to spoil you! We understand that sometimes life gets in the way and plans change but if we know you are hoping to attend, we will make sure there is a slot available. This is open to unpaid carers of anyone who has an ABI and resident within the city of Edinburgh. If there are not enough people planning to come we will need to cancel so it is important to let us know. If you would like sign up for this course of 6 sessions, speak to the activities team to book a suitable time. Each session runs for around 1 hour. Ten Pin Bowling with Get2gether at Fountain Park Wednesday 5 th October Edinburgh Headway Group are tackling some of the isolation and loneliness difficulties that our members tell us they face by linking up with Get2Gether, an organisation which aims to promote friendships and relationships for people with a disability. This month we are going bowling! You can choose to either meet at Ten Pin at Fountain Park at 12pm or travel from Headway House (either minibus or taxis depending on numbers) at 11.30am. This will be a great opportunity to meet new people in similar situations and have some fun! Speak to the Activities Team if you would like to go along. The cost is 7 per person and this includes 2 games of bowling. National Cake Week! Bake Sale, Monday 3 rd and Tuesday 4 th October Did you know National Cake week is 3 rd - 7 th October? Here at Headway, we never turn down an opportunity to celebrate with cake so on Monday 3 rd and Tuesday 4 th October we are having a bake sale in the hall. On these occasions, our generous bakers always get to work and bring along a wonderful collection of irresistible goodies so remember to bring some money with you so you can indulge in something scrummy to go with your coffee! If you are able to bake for us, we would hugely appreciate your donations as these spectacular bake sales can only run with the help of our volunteer bakers. Thank you.

4 OUT AND ABOUT IN AUGUST The August outings for our day service and the social group enabled members to really indulge in our beautiful city and soak up the festival atmosphere! Members of the social group enjoyed a very entertaining afternoon at a Fringe Festival show all about magic and mind control which was made all the more fun when pretty much everyone in the group was invited up onto the stage at some point to take part in the show! Here they are soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the festival vibe. Many of the day service members hadn t visited the National Museum on Chambers Street since its refurbishment so they were immediately wowed by the magnificent Grand Gallery and its soaring light filled atrium. Everyone enjoyed wandering through the galleries stuffed full of amazing arterfacts and interactive gadgets and after lunch the group were lucky enough to see a performance of traditional foot tapping celtic music! A very happy afternoon was enjoyed by all. Members are encouraged to take part in our outings in order to try and restore a sense of wellbeing and courage to try new things. Our regular excursions aim to promote confidence in unfamiliar surroundings, allow practice of selftravel and social interaction amongst their peers and staff out with the safe Headway setting.

We currently have over 40 volunteer cooks ready to start sharing across Edinburgh. If you would like to refer someone you know or become involved yourself, use the following contact details to find out more - Telephone emma@mealmakers.org.uk Website Training in Acquired Brain Injury Awareness Edinburgh Headway Group are committed to working with our volunteers to provide them with training that is relevant to the role and that they are fully equipped to support our members as well as aiding their own personal development. ABI awareness training is mandatory for all the volunteers working with our members at Edinburgh Headway Group and it is also relevant for all existing volunteers who attended this course a few years ago and now feel a refresher session would be helpful. This very useful and informative session is also open to PA s or carers (a fee is chargeable for external attendees). Training will be held at Headway House and the 3 hour session will include information about the brain and brain injury, epilepsy awareness and empathy exercises. You will receive a Edinburgh Headway Group ABI Training Certificate. The training will take place on either Wednesday 5 th or Thursday 6 th October, Please let Cristina know which is date you can attend - only one of these dates will be selected based on the date that is preferred by the majority.
6 THANK YOU TO OUR FUNDRAISERS AND DONATERS Our thanks this month to Baillie Gifford and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Saints and Sinners, Houseproud, The Pat Newman Memorial Trust and to M&S Fort Kinnaird and Ocean Terminal Stores for their generous donations. Some of our fantastic supporters are in training to complete their own physical challenges in the next couple of months and at the same time, raise funds for Headway. On 24 th September, David Payne and 7 friends are planning to complete the 7 Peaks Challenge in support of their good friend Andrew who attends the day service after a stroke. They plan to climb the 27 km long South Shiel Ridge which consists of 7 Munros (mountains over 3000ft) and their aim is to climb all 7 in 7hrs! Wow, there will be some sore feet at the end of this challenge for sure!! David and his team have set up a Just Giving page so if you would like to support their fundraising for Headway, please follow the link below. Here is David and 2 other members of the team pictured on a previous climb in the German Alps. Payne80?utm_source=Sharethis&utm_medium=fundraisingpage&ut m_content=david-payne80&utm_campaign=pfp- Another fabulous fundraiser is Laura Taylor who has chosen to support Edinburgh Headway Group when she takes part in the Great Scottish Run 10K on October 2 nd. Laura is very new to running and only started in May this year but she is already comfortably running 5K and is now training for her next personal goal which is the 10K event. Laura s employers, Johnston Smillie Chartered Accountants have chosen Headway as one of their nominated charities of 2016 so she will be boosting the fundraising of her colleagues this year as well as reaching her personal goal. Thank you Laura and good luck with your training keep on running!! Here is the link to Laura s Just Giving page. Member in the Spotlight Naim can always be found taking part in the activities he loves, whether that is playing the drum enthusiastically in music group, relaxing in or just enjoying his surroundings as he strolls through the grounds in the walking group. Naim is always one of the first up to start the dancing at a party, lending a helping hand to everyone and most definitely starring in all the photographs! Edinburgh Headway Group Christmas Cards Sorry to mention the Christmas word in September!! But..for those of you who like to get ready early, please don t buy your cards just yet because we are producing our own cards this year. As their Charity of the Year, Baillie Gifford is very kindly producing some great quality cards for us which will be available to buy soon. We will keep you posted!!
7 NEW PROJECTS COMING SOON - The Supper Club Following our successful application to Creative Breaks, we are delighted to announce that a new project called The Supper Club will be launched soon. The Supper Club has been created based on carer feedback that both carer and cared for lack opportunities for social interaction especially in the evening. Carers have informed us that they would welcome the opportunity to get out in the evenings and others have told us that they would welcome the opportunity of spending social time with the person they care for and to meet other carers with similar challenges. The Supper Club will provide the means for carers to accompany their loved one to a social event and enjoy each other's company and that of others in a relaxed, fun and supported environment. This is an exciting new project that will benefit all who become involved. Watch out for further announcements soon! Apps on ipads Baillie Gifford has very kindly donated 12 ipads to Headway which the charity were delighted to receive and they have already put to great use with the members. All sorts of Apps have been loaded on to the ipads which will support our members in their cognitive rehabilitation.
