2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE We started our month with a visit by 3 rd Vice District Governor David Watts who delivered a message on behalf of our District Governor Bill Moore. David spoke re looking forward and the Lions symbol L for Leadership, I Inclusion, O openness, N new ideas, S service and how social media is the way forward in attracting younger people and how we need to change the way we do things. He also spoke re the Lions Code of Ethics one of which I consider important is the line, to be careful of my criticism and liberal with my praise, to build up and not destroy. David also presented Bill Battilana with a 40 year Service certificate and Christine Pullin 20 years of service Certificate. Congratulations to both. We had a guest speaker re looking after our health. A number of members attended the Lions District Convention t at Coolum. We watched as David Watts was nominated and then accepted as the 2 nd Vice District Governor. Our bid for the 2021 Convention was accepted. There were some inspirational guest speakers especially the Australian Leo of the Year. Kirra Shelton as the Australian Youth Exchange guest speaker took us on a journey of her travels. We are now coming up to a very busy time of year. One week in November we have 3 events: Remembrance Day 11 th, Council BBQ 14 th and the Drought Festival Concert on the 18 th. 3 YOU HAVE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE Well some of you have if you were at the Dinner Meeting on 2 October but it never all soaks in, so I am printing some extracts from the D G TEAM TALK Bill Moore s Theme is: MOVING FORWARD The Lion s Logo has a Lion s head facing both forward and backwards. Having spent the last three years celebrating our achievements of the last 100 years it is time to look forward. Under the theme of Moving Forward Bill is encouraging our members to focus on five aspects of our operations; (based on the letters in the word LIONS ) L for Leadership. Lions is a learning organisation. 30% of our members have been in Lions for less than 4 years. We have an urgent need to develop our new member s knowledge of the Lions organisation and to develop new leaders to take our clubs forward. I for Inclusion. Everyone has something to contribute. It is important that club programs include service projects to suit each and every individual s capabilities and desires. O for Openness. Please be open to working with other organisations. Invite their leaders to club meetings as guest speakers. Learn what they do and what they need. N for New Ideas. Set a goal to develop at least one new service project this year. S for Service. We Serve remains our primary focus. We all joined Lions with this in mind.

4 Membership satisfaction is the number one goal for 2018 /2019. Membership satisfaction comes from being involved. From knowing you are making a difference. Members want to be listened to. They want to be allowed to take on some responsibility, to be treated with kindness, and to be respected They want to do things they like doing. They want to be part of a team and feel included. They want to learn new skills and to be valued by their fellow Lions members. Research on 50,000 membership drops show that the most common reasons for people leaving lions is unnecessary conflict and disagreement within clubs. This is something we can do something about. Successful clubs put the success of the team ahead of any he say she say drama. They are prepared to put common club goals ahead of their personal views and put aside their personal likes and dislikes for the common good District Goals for 2018 / 2019 Leadership Development New member orientation workshops across the District "Lions and the Future" workshops to help move us forward as an organisation. Guiding Lions Workshops for our experienced club Presidents Membership Improve retention rate by 5% Increase our intake of new members by 6% Increase the percentage of female members to 42% (Currently 40%) Service Goals We would like every club to try one new service project in the next 12 months. We would like to have at least 80% of our clubs diligently reporting their Membership and Service Activities in My LCI every month. This year we are launching the most ambitious fundraising effort in LCIF s history; Campaign 100 will span three years and seeks to raise US$300 million by June 30, 2021.

5 The purpose of Campaign 100 is to enable Lions to serve 200+ million people a year by allowing LCIF to fund Lions clubs who are supporting our Global Causes: LCI surveyed 50,000 Lions worldwide to find out what they though Lions should focus on in the immediate future. This survey resulted in the identification of five key Global Causes. Lions all over the world will be persuing these so I encourage you to join them. Global Cause Typical Projects Children s Cancer Support our Children s Cancer Research Foundation Environment Clean Up Aust Day, Adopt a Road, Tree Planting Hunger Meals on Wheels, Christmas hampers. Vision, Glasses Recycling, Lions Eye Health Program Diabetes Your club can help and support Diabetes Qld and their road shows This year we are encouraging clubs to adopt the Global Action Team concept Boards are necessary to keep the club rolling along doing the same old things. But, in today s fast changing society we need to be more agile. We need to keep pace with the modern way of doing things so Lions are introducing the concept of the Global Action Team into every layer of our organisation. The Global Action Team at Club Level comprises the Club President together with Leadership, Membership and Service chairpersons. This team is tasked with improving these three aspects of club operations and coming up with suggestions to make your club more attractive to your existing members and help you find potential members who want to do something for their community. I think it s a great idea and I would like to see all clubs give it a go in the next 12 months. It s not really a big change but it could pay big dividends and be a great thing for your club. So I encourage you to give it a go over the next 12 months Lions can achieve anything

7 Don t forget that Lion John Nichols is the person in the TNLC to give glasses to. It was the right choice to cancel the Drought Concert on 14 October but I feel sorry for all the organizing that went into the day. 10 PEOPLE NEED HELP IN WONDAI QUOTE: The Dairy Farmer- Lady stated: The 70 year old lady dairy farmer phoned at 6am the other day, very emotional; I don t know how I am going to put food on the table tonight. Two days later Lions provided support in many ways; She said: This will be the first meat we have had for 6 months. She was working in the paddocks around cattle with no shoes as they had come apart. The elderly male farmer is unwell! 14 Thank goodness we have Lion May checking up on us. She came around to my place the other day to check on me. We had a cuppa and a good chat.
