Thank you to Al Zamudio, Ron Segvich, and Steve Schuelka for all their hard work that went into making the conference educational and enjoyable. There were approximately 60 professionals that attended the conference, and I have received positive feedback about the conference and our section. Once again, I would like to thank all of the sponsors, STV, JMP, Panduit, Calumet College of St. Joseph, and South Suburban College, for their support. I hope to see you at the dinner meeting on February 21, at Theo s Steak and Seafood in Highland, Indiana. The speaker will be Tim Osborne, and he will present Effective Communication with the Customer. Please make sure you submit your reservation early for the plant tour at Lear Corporation in Hammond, Indiana scheduled for March 20. Periodically visit our own Illiana website, where the newsletter, program schedule, job openings, and training opportunities are posted. Any changes to the dinner meeting topics and locations will be announced via the website and s. The root cause of most issues between the client and metrology service provider rests in the failure to clearly communicate. Ultimately this results in rework, warranties, complaints, corrective actions, amended certificates and possibly additional audits. In many cases it costs more to follow-up and to correct the problem (to the root cause) than the calibration itself. This presentation will provide a brief discussion of ISO/IEC as it pertains to the communication requirements between the client and the metrology laboratory then specifically focuses on the areas of contract review, subcontracting, purchasing and reporting as they are used to support traceability in measurements. It will also illustrate some of the common weak communication areas, address the financial impact on front-end customer service and rework, and suggest some corrective and preventive defenses against communication pitfalls. 3 SPEAKER BIO 1200 North Old U.S. 23 Hartland, Michigan (PH) x 225 (FX) (MB) tosborne@dtical.com Tim serves as the Director of Northern Operations for Dynamic Technology, Inc, a Trescal company, which is the largest third-party calibration laboratory in the world. He currently serves as a Board member for the National Conference of Standards Laboratories International (NCSLI) and is responsible for overseeing the publication of standards and metrology practices. He also consults to the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation s (A2LA) through the Criteria Council, a group that establishes operational policies for conformity assessment bodies. Tim has been an active in the metrology and testing communities for over twenty years by offering training on accreditation, metrology, measurement uncertainty and internal auditing as well as radiation safety. In addition to consulting, he participates on panel discussions, co-leads road shows and co-authors national standards.
