2 In order for a person to understand COMPASS, he/she must first understand where we, the students, are coming from.

3 25% of us have lost a parent or guardian 27% have lost a sibling 35% of us have been abused physically or sexually 43% live with a parent or guardian who has a disability 46% of us have been homeless 82% have a parent who has served time in prison or jail

4 45% of us have been diagnosed with a mental illness 44% of us were expelled the semester before attending COMPASS 36% of us abuse drugs 46% of us are currently on probation or have been on probation in the past year If it weren t for COMPASS, most of us would be expelled and running the streets.

5 Instead, thanks to COMPASS, many of us are turning our lives around.

6 Last year, 35% of us successfully completed the program and were ready to return to our home school in the fall 60% of us showed growth in NWEA from fall to spring And, 66% increased our SRI scores from fall to spring Last year, 59% of our freshmen earned 5 or more credits and 40% are now on track to graduate

7 100% of our sophomores who started with 0 credits earned 5 or more credits Last year, 54% of us finished a whole year of school without an OSS 64% of us finished our first full year of school since being previously expelled (MANY of us were expelled several years in a row) This year, COMPASS has had a 40% decrease in referrals from last year

8 How are we doing this?

9 At COMPASS, we are a family! We travel with the same group of kids all day. We compete academically and behaviorally as a family. Our classrooms look and feel like home, and we even have a family dog, OSCAAR. Sometimes, we get on each other s nerves like a family, BUT we also bond and learn how to help one another grow and change.

11 We do lots of project-based learning in Makerspace and in our regular classes. COMPASS understands that we like to learn by doing!

12 His name stands for: O ur S tudents C an A chieve A ny R eality This year, we wrote proposals and grants to get our therapy dog, OSCAAR.

14 Our COMPASS family grew a community garden together, and we got to taste lots of different fruits and vegetables many of us have never tried before.

15 We even made some AWESOME salsa that we love to eat on special COMPASS occasions. Next year, we plan to set up a farmer s market to sell what we grow!

16 But... the dog and the garden aren t always fun! They take a lot of hard work and responsibility.

17 At COMPASS, we track our data and look at it very closely. Every student keeps a data binder in homeroom. And, our staff meets once a week to review the data of each and every COMPASS student!

18 We get special rewards each Friday for improving our behavior. We also get fun rewards when we show academic growth.

19 We celebrate Christmas together as a family, too!

20 We have ALLday Christmas activities like: A gingerbread house contest

21 A special reading of The Polar Express served with hot chocolate and coloring pages A snowman craft we got to take home to give as a gift to a family member

22 We had a huge Christmas feast with homemade food from our COMPASS staff. It was delicious! Our superintendents even baked something special to share!

23 We sang Christmas carols and even got presents!!! Every one of us got new socks, new winter hats, new t-shirts, and some unique surprises from the staff.

24 We do community service as a family, too. One time, we even repaired a classmate s house that had big holes in the dry wall. Now, that was a messy project!

25 At COMPASS, we have Family Fun Nights where we play games and eat dinner together. Our families from home get to come, and we learn things about how to respect each other, how to have fun together, and just how to be a

26 We have a S.A.D.D. group at COMPASS, too. Student leaders teach us about the negative impact of drugs as well as how to have healthy relationships.

27 This year, we got 15 brand new guitars donated, and we are learning how to read and play music.

28 Our Meridian behavior clinicians are EXTREMELY important members of our COMPASS family.

29 Every day, they teach us basic life lessons and social emotional skills (like how to control our anger). They work with us after school, on breaks, and even in the summer.

30 Kris is one of our students who completed the program and was able to return to AHS. Before leaving, he wrote this letter to his COMPASS family.
