PREP Getting Prepared with Your Neighbors

Planning for Resilience & Emergency Preparedness DIY program household preparedness organizing with neighbors longer term resilience What is PREP?

Volunteers and neighbors with a passion Adapted from Seattle Neighbors Actively Prepare (SNAP) Washington s Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) Collaborating public/private partners: Portland Bureau of Emergency Management Portland Fire and Rescue Multnomah County Emergency Management SE Uplift, other Neighborhood Coalitions Who s behind PREP?

Stages of preparedness in PREP Get Prepared Get Prepared with Your Neighbors Get Organized (MYN) Get Prepared with Neighbors: resources Preparedness Handouts Host Kit Why and how thanks to JoAnn Jordan from Seattle OEM Tonight s presentation

Preparedness Handouts Get informed Make a plan Make a kit Host Kit Invitation Signs Sign in sheet Agenda Resources for you & neighbors

Natural desire to be helpful You and the people nearby will be each other s main support People need more than info for a major life change: we need moral support Ready our households > mentally ready to organize for after disaster (MYN) Why prepare with neighbors?

No need to be an expert lots of info in handouts if you don t know you can find out Every neighborhood is different Seattle: huge range of preparedness be flexible in approach & using resources Be positive emphasize keeping families safe connecting with neighbors developing confidence: ready for anything! What should I know?

Don t be attached to particular results some people won t respond creating a culture of preparedness is slow know what you re doing is important appreciate whatever results you get What should I know?

Don t know anyone in neighborhood have a party or potluck or start with one person & go from there Don t like or trust some neighbors invite those you are comfortable with No point in trying, they won t listen some won t do what you can What might hold you back?

If people know I m prepared, I m at risk I m at less risk if I ve encouraged them to prepare & given them info on how I m not the right messenger find someone from that community to work with Fear outside comfort zone value of moving beyond your comfort zone ask someone who s done it for help What might hold you back?

Host kit includes flyer it s just a reminder: invite them personally What I said I m your neighbor Liz, I m inviting you to gather Tuesday evening to talk about emergency preparedness. As you may know... Here s some info so that you ll have it in case you can t come. Did not ask for RSVPs How do I do it? The invitation

They may mention concerns when you invite them or at the meeting Acknowledge concerns are real Stages of denial it won t happen not all that bad government will save us I ll just die anyway why bother? Issues people may have

Dealing with denial: knowledge is power incorporate events they believe can happen explain it s not if but when earthquakes are the most survivable natural disaster reality check: don t expect authorities any time soon you ll cope better with a plan and other preparations Issues people may have

Loners some people just won t participate but can benefit from preparedness info They already have it covered congratulate them invite them to come and share knowledge Got a gun covered explain that the topic is household and community preparedness Issues people may have

Fear of dying and suffering be gentle and positive explain that most people respond to disasters with courage and helpfulness Fear of sharing personal information don t require them to share it show trust in advance by sharing first explain advantages of knowing who they can ask for help Issues people may have

Don t want to focus on negativity emphasize keeping safe and making connections It s overwhelming Just take one step at a time Invincibility of youth Issues people may have

Host kit has agenda and signage just a resource to adapt Look through handouts mark key items that you want to highlight Setting and refreshments living room or backyard tea and cookies, beer, potluck Could set out some emergency gear Planning your meeting

Your mental preparedness encourage, empower, promote safety and connectedness Introductions name, where they live what brought them here Optional ice breaker could give small prize Conducting your meeting

Go through handouts encourage comments/questions Get contact info (signup sheet) Decide next step meet again about preparedness? ready to organize (MYN)? set next meeting Congratulate yourselves! Conducting your meeting

District neighborhood coalition offices Host kits Preparedness handouts MYN resources for next step PREP postcards Resources

PREP website Get Prepared tab: all these preparedness handouts plus Emergency Sanitation Storing Emergency Water Work, School and Car Kits and Vehicle Prep Zombie Apocalypse Take 5 to Survive Be Informed different kinds of disasters Together We Prepare Oregon Living on Shaky Ground Resources

PREP website Get Organized tab: Where to get MYN booklets and video to borrow (coalition offices) MYN Discussion Guide MYN meeting reminder flyer MYN contact list PREP Meeting Here signs MYN how to sheets: utility shutoffs, fire extinguishers, basic search and rescue Resources
