August 2017 PROPWASH A Newsletter of EAA Chapter 517, Inc.
From the chapter president Steve Rossiter It appears fire season has arrived. We started seeing a lot of tanker operations during our meeting at the hangar. It was cool to have dinner and watch all the aircraft departures. I am happy to report that Chapter membership is increasing, we are approaching 60 total members. At the July meeting we even had a couple of visiting EAA members from other chapters, one from the Helena chapter and another from Florida. I mentioned in an earlier column that I had submitted Clint and Larry for EAA Chapter Awards. Unfortunately, that didn t work out for this year. However, I did receive a rather detailed explanation so we will be able to get the correct boxes checked for next year. Thanks to one of our newest members, Bruce Doering, for assuming the cooking duties and all those who built our potluck table offerings. It was a rather spectacular variety of food. I want to also thank Edi Stan, Gary Weyermann, Larry DePute, and Roger Shaw for arriving very early to assist getting the trailer to the hangar and providing setup assistance. I ve had a conversation with the other owners in the condo complex and we agreed that we will set up our Chapter library in the second floor conference room. Any duplicate material will be housed in our secondary library at the Stevensville hangar. I think the Stevensville library should also serve as our technical library, not yet decided. Roger Shaw and his floor gang will have completed sealing the hangar floor on July 31. The paint gang will be getting, at least, the walls painted shortly thereafter. Page 2 Sherry and I will have just completed our trip to Oshkosh as you are reading this. You ll understand our late decision to make the trip after you see the note elsewhere in the PropWash. Enjoy our wonderful Montana flying season. Be careful around fire operations, it appears we will get more than our typical share of fires this year. Until next month, have fun out there! Steve
Work party seals new hangar floor By Roger Shaw On July 24 the new Missoula hangar floor (3,600 sq ft) got swept, blown off and vacuumed. Then the floor had two coats of an acrylic/silicone sealer applied. This should help protect the floor of the new hangar and ensure it lasts for many years. The Chapter Board of Directors wants to thank the following members for their tools, time and efforts to help prepare the new hangar: Burt Caldwell, Gary Matson, Bill Schertz, Bree Southerland, Jim Younkin and Roger Shaw. If you haven t had an opportunity to check out the new hangar, you ll be impressed by the quality of the chapter s newest home at the Missoula Airport. Additional pictures from the work party can be seen on the next page. Page 3

MSO Hangar Operations Procedures By Steve Rossiter For all of our members who were not able to attend the July meeting, here is a review of the things you must be aware of when you use our facility in Missoula. Please contact one of our board members for an on-site briefing the first time you go. They will give you the secret handshake for getting to various parts of the building. Operating Rules You must be a current EAA Chapter 517 member to be in the building unescorted. Normal member access will be through the street door directly into our hangar. We have far too many members to try to manage the security codes on the main public entrance. Once you are in the EAA space, you will be able to allow remote access for guests through the main entrance through our phone system. (Security issue) If you wish to go onto the aircraft ramp, you must hold a Missoula Airport Ramp Access Card or be escorted by someone who does. (Security rule) Some lights in the building are automatic and some are manually operated. If a light comes on automatically, it will go off automatically, so don t mess with those light switches. The hangar bay lights are manual as are the lights in the common area lounge area. If you turn on a light, please assure you turn it off when you are done. Please remember, the common area space is shared with all other condominium owners. Please leave the common areas as clean, or cleaner than when you arrived. When you are leaving the facility be sure the office door to the common area is closed and locked. Be sure the man door in the bifold door is closed and locked. Be sure the street side hangar man door is closed and locked. (Security issue) Be sure the door between the hangar and office is closed, but NOT LOCKED. This is a fire door and the three hour fire wall won t work if that door is not closed. Operation of the bifold door please contact a Board member for dual instruction before operating that door. (Security issue) By agreement with the Condo Association, any meetings in the common areas must be coordinated with the other owners. Not a big problem right now, but as the units get sold out there will be six other owners. If you have guests with you, please be sure the very young are properly supervised for both safety and security purposes. For the most part, these rule are common sense guidelines. Being on an air carrier airport does require tighter rules than at other airports. These rules should allow us to have an enhanced experience at our Missoula Headquarters. How you can help with the sweepstakes By Steve Rossiter I presume those of you who use computers received my July 20 about how you can help move the sweepstakes forward. I should probably have mentioned that when I sent out my E-blast to my friends and family I actually received three positive responses on the very first day. I will send out another E-blast when Sherry and I return from Oshkosh to people on some of my other accounts. I have other business-related accounts. So please follow my lead on this approach and let s see what we get. Please consider hanging one of our sweepstakes fliers up in businesses you do business with who have places for those sorts of things. All we have to do is spread the word Page 5 and give people the opportunity to help us in our fundraising effort. It is absolutely amazing how people are willing to help with such an effort. , social media, bulletin boards and some businesses will even allow a display on their counter. Places where help is easy are the places already displaying other organizations postings. GO EAA 517 SWEEPSTAKES TEAM!

MSO Headquarters Grand Opening postponed EAA Chapter 517, Inc. will welcome the whole Missoula aviation community and Regional EAA Chapters to the Grand Opening of our new Chapter Hangar and Headquarters with a pig roast. EAA 517 member Bryan Douglass will be the Pig BBQ Master. Due to the smoke and the challenges that would create for folks flying in from outside of the area, the grand opening celebration has been postponed until a later date. MSO Airport Appreciation Day Mark your calendar on September 9, The Missoula Airport Authority and Staff will host an Airport Appreciation Day at the new East Ramp Condominium Complex. That would be by EAA 517 s hangar. All EAA Chapter 517 members are invited as is the whole Missoula aviation community. This has been an annual event for the last decade or so. It was first held at the MSO Public Safety Building then moved for the last few years to the Runway 25 Condominium Complex and now to our Condo Complex. There are expected to be a couple of car clubs in attendance and maybe other surprises. Cris Jensen and Brian Ellestad will be cooking. This event runs from 1100 hours to 1500 hours. ANNOUNCEMENTS Monthly meetings From now on I intend to be sure we have a program for each meeting. This will be, at least, some of the EAA video productions they send out each month. I would also like to see us make every meeting a Potluck meal. Saturday EAA Chapter 517 hospitality event. During the flying season we have been considering the option to staff our MSO HQ for maybe a pancake breakfast about once a month and coffee and donuts on the other Saturdays. We will advertise this to the regional EAA chapters and Montana aviation community. We would be trying to provide a destination for folks to fly to. It might be something to do as a test in September this year, then in October shift to a winter version. Aviation and/or aviation history movie night. This would be a regular monthly gathering for those interested in seeing and aviation movie and watching aviation history presentations. There is an unlimited source of material that would be fun to watch in a group setting with beverages and popcorn. What you like to see as a new regular EAA 517 activity? August 21 EAA 517 Meeting What s Next for EAA Chapter 517? Discussion, or rather a brain storming session, for future activities will be our program at our August Now that we are in the new hangar, the time has come meeting at our Stevensville, southern headquarters. to nail down some new activities for the Chapter to Those of us who attended Oshkosh will also provide a engage in to better provide for our current members and briefing on our experience at AirVenture So, plan entice more people to become chapter members. Here are on a potluck, including potluck entrées, for August 21, some of the things we have talked about in the past at 1800 hours. Page 7
Wings, Wheels, and Young Eagles By Ray Aten Photos by Ralph Jones On June 24, EAA 517 was at Ravalli County Airport enjoying the Airshow, Fly-in, and Car Show and signing up young people (ages 8-17) for Young Eagles flights. The airshow was excellent. Notable was Brad Wursten and his Power Addiction performance. The attendance was off the charts (estimates were higher than 3,000) and Young Eagles sign-ups were brisk and capped when we hit 50. Sunday, June 25, Will Deschamps, Gary Matson, Paul O bagy, and I took 27 on flights and the following Saturday, July 1, Will, Gary and I took another 10 on flights. The remainder, who had scheduling conflicts, we hope to fly in August. Without exception the flights were rewarding for both the Young Eagle and the pilot. It is delightful to observe anxiety turn into expressions of Wow, Cool, Amazing, and return to Earth with happy Eagles. I encourage each EAA 517 member pilot to give the Young Eagles program a try. 11 Chapter President Receives Major Achievement Award from EAA National By Sherry Rossiter On July 29, during an awards breakfast at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, WI, EAA 517 President Steve Rossiter was honored by EAA headquarters with a 2017 Major Achievement Award. The Major Achievement Awards are given to recognize EAA members who have provided extraordinary leadership, volunteerism, accomplishment, creativity, and dedication to their local chapters. Only three of these awards were given this year. Selection criteria for the EAA Major Achievement Award includes examples of chapter service and dedication over and beyond the average member, participation in and service to the greater aviation community and personal and professional achievement in aviation over the lifespan.
