1 Lion Amy Higgins, Editor DISTRICT 14 L LIONS NEWS Message from District Governor Gerald Chapman April 2014 Fellow Lions Lioness and Leos, I am asked regularly if my year as District Governor is winding down. It is a privilege to serve the Lions of District 14-L. Each year is more like a transition from serving in some position or another. So transitioning would be more descriptive than winding down. We need more Lions to transition to positions beyond the club level. There are many positions where you can serve and give the incoming DG and VDG's the support they need to move the district forward. There are training sessions coming up that will give you opportunities to learn something about Lionism, even if you aren't going into one of the positions. Watch the newsletter or go to the District 14-L website at to find out how to attend them. Many times questions are asked that would have been answered if someone from the club attended a District 14-L Cabinet Meeting or training session. There is still time to get those reservations in for the District 14-L Convention on April 26th. The Juniata Valley High School is working hard to make the Lions feel welcome and provide great facilities for the event. I'm looking forward to meeting representatives from different Lions related organizations with displays, and the informative and motivating speakers and seminars. I hope to meet you too. Looking ahead, the Popeye Fleck Fishing Derby and PA Lions Appreciation Day at Beacon Lodge will need Lions from District 14-L to make them a success. These are opportunities to be actively engaged as a Lion. Please support 1 st VDG Anna by filling positions, and supplying ads for the District Directory. Get those PU101's submitted to Anna, the PA Lions State Office, and Lions Clubs International. addresses are a great help also. Follow your Lions dream, it may be the answer to someone's nightmare. Yours in Lionism, DG Gerald DG Gerald & 1 st Lady Sue enjoying the Region 1 Zone Social
2 Message from 1 st VDG Anna Spring is finally on the way, crocuses are coming up, and trees are starting to bud. Just as we nurture new life into our plants we also need to nurture the new members that we have brought into our clubs over the winter. You need to start mentoring programs for your new members, get them involved in club activities. Invite that new member to attend the District s Convention with you to share the fellowship and learning experience. When you install a new member or celebrate a Charter night, Zone Social Events, or whatever is going on in your club, spread the news by putting pictures along with articles in the newspaper letting other people know that your clubs are active and going places, and encourage others to join. Consider attending the District Convention and International Convention as a group and share in the learning experience. Vote for your incoming District leaders. If you are asked to take a leadership position, whether in the district or in your own club, I hope you take the challenge and feel honored to help lead the Lions forward. This challenge will help you grow to be a better Lion as you follow our motto WE SERVE. Yours in Lionism, VDG Anna Region 1 Zone Social Region 2 Zone Social Message from 2 nd VDG Michael Hello Fellow Lions, Lionesses, and Leos, Spring is here! Nature is starting to wake up, trees are going to be getting buds, the grass is starting to turn green, and even the flowers are starting to break thru the ground. Now that the days are longer and warmer the community becomes more active and so should your club. I'm going to be looking at the club reports and the newsletter, hoping to see every club becoming more active. Remember that when you run into your friends that it's a good opportunity to invite them to your next club meeting to show them what Lions is all about. You would be surprised how many people would say yes. Officers, your year of serving your club is nearing its end and it's time for you to start thinking about your replacement. Once you think of a member that can fill the position, go to them and tell them why you feel they would be a great officer. Then start showing them how to perform the duties of the position. People tend to say yes if they know what's required and they have confidence in themselves. Yours in Lionism, Michael Brown 2

7 From Lions Bill McLaughlin & Amos Shatzer We need YOU! Lions Amos Shatzer and Bill McLaughlin are lonely and need you to call, , or otherwise contact them so that they can get you registered for what is shaping up to be a GREAT Lions gathering. The meat and potatoes of this convention will all happen Saturday, April 26, 2014 so you can have just a one-day event. It s convention time! You don t want to miss it! Our day will kick off with FREE coffee and doughnuts and the registration and certifications will be open at 9:00am. A presentation from PCC Terry Mussleman on Membership/Leadership will begin at 10:00 am, as well as a ladies program, followed by a How to Achieve Your Optimal State of Health seminar at 11:00 am by Lanette Johnson A luncheon at 12:00 pm will be our time to gather with friends to socialize. Our Cabinet meeting beginning at 1:15 pm will give you an opportunity to learn what is happening in your district. You will have several opportunities to hear the Lions story and also learn more about District 14-L. Come hear the news! We will also have another ladies program at this time for those who wish to attend. At 3:15 pm we will have a seminar presented by Leader Dog Field Representative Bunny Tabatt & Dixie. And don t forget to vote! Voting begins at 4:15 pm, followed by our evening banquet with keynote speaker Past International Director Wayne Davis from Winchester, Virginia. All of these seminars are located in classrooms at the Juniata Valley High School* and the breaks between these meetings will be in the cafeteria where there will be leisure time, so even the graduate couch potato has no excuse!! There s more to come and see, but you ll never know if you don t come and check it out. There will be tables in our display area and we have invited Beacon Lodge, Sight Conservation, Northeast Eye Bank, Pennsylvania Lions Foundation, Pennsylvania Hearing Research, and Huntingdon Hospital for Diabetes Awareness to attend. What convention would be complete without a chance at the raffle baskets? You ll never know if you don t come! Lion Linda Shaeffer has put together a splendid menu for this event: you will not be hungry! As with the tradition of recent conventions, you do not have to sign up for all meals. The luncheon at noon is FREE and our evening convention meal is just $ So the only thing to do now is contact Lions Amos Shatzer and Bill McLaughlin so that we can have everything ready for YOU! Latecomers are welcome too, but you won t be sorry if you register early! *Directions attached on page 8 7
