1 Lion Amy Higgins, Editor DISTRICT 14 L LIONS NEWS Message from District Governor Gerald Chapman September 2013 Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos Why do people add turf builder to grass? To give it what it needs to grow and display the best it can be. It makes sense that a Lion, Lioness, or Leo would take advantage of opportunities to grow and be the best they can be. As I visit clubs, many state that they want to build membership and service. There is help. Fruit doesn't pick itself and walk in the door, you have to get it yourself or with the help of others. There are events in District 14L that will help you in Lionism. Leadership training will take place several times throughout the district, the first one being on Sept. 7 at the Grace UM Church in Three Springs - details are available in the newsletter. It is open to Lions in offices, or who wish to grow as Lions. The second opportunity to grow as Lions is the Fall Rally on October 19 at the Mount Union High School. This is an event for motivation and fellowship. Presentations by people who have gone beyond the normal Lion experience. You will be inspired when you see what can be done, and is being done through the Lions organization. Make your reservation TODAY. I want to thank all those who have welcomed me to the club visits so far, and the hospitality given to me and the VDG's. If you wish to join me in a club visitation, contact the club president and make a visit request. You are quite welcome as far as I'm concerned. If you are interested in serving as a club officer and beyond, let me or the GLT/GMT leaders know. Region 2 will be the host region of the District 14L November Cabinet meeting at the Hustontown Fire Hall on November 10. This is turf builder for club officers and Lions in District 14L and especially Region 2. All the Lions should get their grass out and make a great showing at this event. Hope to see many of you at club visits or somewhere along the way. Yours in Lionism DG Gerald
2 Message from 1 st VDG Anna Happy Labor Day to all our Lions Families. Now that more of our clubs will be starting back from their summer off, this might be a good time to do a membership drive. If your club has an event coming up soon, this would be a good time to set up a stand and give out applications and information to people on the activities your club does for the community and support that your club gives your area. There are many helpful articles, brochures, and publications on the LCI website for this purpose. One that I found to be very good is the JUST ASK program, or you could have the GLT/GMT team meet with your club to discuss another plan. Peace Poster contests are on again this year and the kits are available at Lions Club Supplies. I would like to see more clubs participate in this project. Not only does it ENGAGE OUR YOUTH, which is one of the International President Barry Palmer s campaigns, but also a young person within your community has a chance win some money. If you would like to further your leadership and Lions skills there is now a Regional Lions Leadership Institute held here in Pa. Please contact the Governors team if you are interested. It will start in February but registration needs to be in by December. The Lions Eye Health Program is empowering our lions clubs to provide healthy vision and raise awareness to the causes and prevention of vision loss. Clubs can set up screaming for early detection and timely prevention or treatment of eye diseases. This is a great activity to promote awareness of eye health within our schools or senior centers. We can also collect eyeglasses for recycling. I would like to see some new faces at this year s Fall Rally; a lot of work goes into arranging this event. Guest presenters travel a distance to bring us this information so we as Lions should turn out to show our support. Send corrections to amysunfire@earthlink.net Message from 2 nd VDG Michael I m having a wonderful time serving as your 2 nd VDG. I ve been out visiting several clubs, meeting lions, and enjoying some great food and fellowship. It s a pleasure to see clubs inducting new members. We must never stop looking for new members so we can continue to serve our fellow man. We have 2 inspiring themes that we should practice in our Lion life. The 1 st is from our IP Barry Palmer: Follow Your Dream. What is your dream for your club? Is there a special project that you have? Is there a need in your community that you would like to get involved in? Here is your chance to get started and follow your dream and make it a reality. Our 2 nd theme comes from our own DG Gerald: Rays of Hope in Lionism. All so often Lions are that ray of hope for places of disaster all over the world. We are also there for those in our local communities that need a caring helping hand. Where there is a need you can usually find Lions doing their part. I encourage you to be that ray of hope by doing your part as a club and as an individual in Lionism. Let s show our support for our DG by attending the 14L Fall Rally, held on October 19 th at the Mount Union High School. The Governor has lined up 2 great presenters to share their personal involvement in Lions. It will be a time of great fellowship, learning, and an awesome ham dinner. I know I m looking forward to meeting our 14L club members. Mark your calendar, plan on attending, and when you see me there I want you to come up and introduce yourself. I also would like to hear how you are Following Your Dream by being a Ray of Hope in Lionism. 2

5 TAKE A LIONS CHALLENGE In honor of our Lady Lions and Lionesses, we are asking all Clubs to participate in raising funds for breast cancer research. The Burnham Lions Club is challenging all District 14-L Lions Clubs to participate in this very important endeavor. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we are raising funds to donate to the Pennsylvania Pink Zone. The Pennsylvania Pink Zone ( promotes cancer awareness and empowers survivors through yearround efforts to raise funds critical in supporting vital breast cancer organizations, charities, and facilities that focus on breast cancer education, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. All monies collected stay within Pennsylvania. The donations go to six (6) Pennsylvania institutions: Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, PA Breast Cancer Coalition, Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, and Lewistown Hospital. The Burnham Lions Club is sponsoring a Breakfast for Breast Cancer on October 26, 2013, and we are asking all clubs in District 14-L to find their own unique way to help us raise funds in October so that our Lions Clubs can make a significant contribution to defeating breast cancer. All institute schedules are now posted, and many applications are available online. Visit the Development Programs page in the Leadership Resource Center today! Contact the Institutes and Seminars department for more information. Invite Students and Former Leos Last month s Global Service Action Campaign was Engaging Our Youth. This month, think about inviting younger community members, such as students and former Leos, to become Lions. Young members represent the future of Lions. They bring new energy, inspire fresh ideas for service, and provide increased support for local and international projects. Read more about the Student Member Program and the Leo to Lion Program and the benefits they receive when joining Lions. 8
