1 DISTRICT 2-S1 NEWSLETTER Spurring The Next 100 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 3 SEPT 2017 From The Desk of The District Governor Russell Wheeler Hurricane Harvey brought destruction to our coastal area clubs in ways only seen every estimated 500 years. Flooding occurred within five counties and in many instances caused complete destruction to the structure and its contents. The Lions of Bridge City, Little Cypress, Orange, Orange Noon, Vidor, Beaumont Breakfast, Beaumont Founders, Lumberton, Silsbee, Sour Lake, Dick Dowling, Nederland Professional, Port Arthur Founders, Port Neches and Winnie-Stowell lost part of their basic communications. Wi-fi, cell service and land line communication was interrupted because of power outages or the facilities that processed the calls was out of service. In spite of all the things that did not work, power outages, no phone service, no capability and difficulty traveling flooded roads your Lions got out and determined what their communities needed. After rescue operations slowed we determined the greatest need was feeding the first responders and feeding those that were displaced. We provided food and prepared meals for the Jasper EOC first responders with volunteers from Jasper and Hemphill Lions and the food purchased through the Hemphill club, total meals served approximately 650. The meals were funded through a Texas Lions Foundation Grant. On September 01, 2017 the Council of Governors applied to LCIF for a $100, emergency grant for the four districts affected by the hurricane. The grant was approved September 5th and $25, was transferred to districts S-1, S-2 (Houston), S-4 (Southwest Harris County) and A- 3 (Rockport and areas west). LCIF placed expenditure limitations on the grant and a 30 day timeline for spending the grant funds. I contacted chairmen in zones 1, 2 and 3 and asked for their immediate needs within their communities. The overwhelming response was food, clothing, school supplies and later mold retardant and cleaning supplies. The Orange club identified the need for basic food staples to feed displaced citizens in Orange and we accommodated this need through a $4, donation to the Orange Christian Services food bank account and this donation provided approximately 2100 meals. Next I purchased 900 school ready backpacks and Vice Governor Chris Gunstream and I delivered these to Orangefield, Vidor, Winnie-East Chambers, Hardin-Jefferson, Hampshire-Fannett, Roy Guess (Beaumont), Little Cy-
2 PAGE 2 RECRUIT, REBUILD, RETAIN press, and West Orange Cove elementary schools. When we delivered the backpacks each child also received a bright yellow T-Shirt with the LEO Lion on front. After the water finally receded residents were able to return to their homes and start the mud-out process. From Winnie to the Sabine River homes were under demolition and everyone was requesting mold retardant. District Governor Jeff Williams from Kenner Louisiana offered his company resources by providing EPA and FEMA approved retardant at cost to our district. I purchased 585 chemical kits and asked the zone chairs to get them into their communities. Our Lions have performed beyond what is expected of volunteers and I am proud to be the governor in S-1. Purchases are listed below: Mold Retardant $ T-Shirts $ T-Shirts $ Food $ Backpacks $ School Supplies $ TOTAL $24, Southeast Texas strides has been cancelled for this year due to the devastation from the hurricane. We would like to thank all the Lions Clubs and lions that have donated to the event over the past few years and with any luck we will be back next year full strength and ready to go. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all try to recover from this disaster.
3 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 3 PAGE 3 President's Message WE NEED LIONISM FROM EVERY LION Have you ever been on a great vacation where you did a lot and saw a lot? When you get back home, you are eager to tell family and friends all about it. But it s hard not only to recount specifics but also to convey just how exciting it was or how you almost felt like a different person. Words can t capture what you experienced and how remarkable it all was. The same inadequacy of words confronts me now. I want to tell you about the centennial convention and how wonderful it was. But you needed to be there to appreciate it. It was a party, a celebration, a gathering of Lions from Alabama to Zimbabwe. That s the main takeaway: the universality of Lions. We are nearly everywhere. And for a week we are in one place. Believe me, it s exhilarating just to walk down a hallway or get into an elevator to find yourself surrounded by Lions worldwide. And the beauty of that is that strangers quickly become friends. The bond of service we share enables Lions to look past obvious differences in cultures, customs and languages and to find instant camaraderie. Lions who attend convention also find affirmation. It is great to be a Lion. It s great to be part of a worldwide service association that makes the world a better place. It s great to play a role in reversing blindness, feeding the hungry and improving the environment. In Chicago we celebrated 100 years of service and charted our course for the next few years. We ll do our traditional service regarding vision, but we also will focus on hunger, the environment, pediatric cancer and diabetes. Your contribution, however big or small, is appreciated. More importantly, it s needed. Thank you for embracing We Serve. Thank you for attending meetings, flipping pancakes and collecting eyeglasses. What you do as a Lion is invaluable. As Mother Teresa said, I can do things you cannot. You can do things I cannot. Together we can do great things. So if you were not able to make it to Chicago let me affirm what you do as a Lion. Together, We Serve over 100 million people each year. While this number is amazing, I want to focus on another number. This year, my deepest wish is that each of our 1.4 million Lions must serve. We need some Lionism from every Lion. Naresh Aggarwal Lions Clubs International President

7 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 3 PAGE 7 OCTOBER MEMBERSHIP GROWTH MONTH Lions of District 2-S1, CONGRATULATIONS, we completed the first quarter of the Lions year with a + 6 in membership and 40 new Lions in our district. Twenty of our Fifty-Two Lions Clubs are now MEMBERSHIP- ACTIVE, also congratulations to every Lion that brought in a new Lion to their club. Remember that our goal is to be membership-active in every club in the district. We still have a lot of membership work to do in our district, our GOAL is to be +211 by the end of June Don t forget your club goals, your zone chair or myself (GMT) should have reviewed the goals set for your club by now. October is LCI Membership Growth Month. We will also use October as our Membership Blitz month. Wouldn t It be great for every club in the district to become membership-active with a new member or two inducted into their club in October? I know some Lions clubs in the South have had problems with Hurricane Harvey, but what a perfect time, as we serve those people that need our help now, to recruit new members. More members, mean more service now and for years to come. Our district is + 6 now, where can we be in membership on November 1 st, + 25 maybe? Let me review our Club incentives for the Club that leads the district in new membership for the month of October. The club with the most new members gained in October will receive a Centennial Jacket for the Club President and Membership Chair with their name embroidered. I would also like to congratulate Burkeville Toledo-Bend for each inducting six new members this Lions year. We need every district Lions Club to meet or exceed their membership goal for A big Thank You to every club in our district for taking on the membership challenge and goals set for you this Lions year. 23 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 3 PAGE 23 When service projects are too large for a club or a district to financially support, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is there to assist. A great example of Lions and LCIF working together happens in the midst of disaster. This summer, the world watched as natural disasters struck around the world. In South Asia, parts of India, Nepal and Bangladesh are experiencing devastating monsoon rains. In Mumbai alone, over 1,000 people have been reported killed in the floods. In the past 3 months, LCIF has approved 20 emergency grants to South Asia, totaling US$125,000. In July, flooding in Japan took lives and destroyed homes. LCIF awarded a US$100,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to help the community recover. In August, Hurricane Harvey devastated the Texas coast stretching from the Houston area into Louisiana. During one of the worst natural disasters in American history, thousands of people lost their homes and everything they own. Some people lost family members. LCIF immediately awarded a US$100,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to assist in reconstruction efforts. Within two weeks of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma struck Florida and other areas of the Southeast United States, and destroyed much of the islands in the western Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. At the same time, Mexico was hit by its strongest earthquake in 100 years. LCIF has made funds available for two more US$100,000 grants to aid Lions assisting with Hurricane Irma and Mexico s earthquake. Most recently, LCIF awarded a US$100,000 grant to support Puerto Rico hurricane relief and reconstruction in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individuals affected by these and other natural disasters. At the same time, LCIF issues a heartfelt thank you to our donors. Please consider joining them and making a contribution. Donations will continue Lions relief efforts around the world, and no gift is too small. Sincerely, Chancellor Bob Corlew Chairman, Lions Clubs International Foundation

32 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 3 PAGE 32 CLUB ACTIVITY REPORTS Beaumont Breakfast Lions Club Well, we did not get our August report as shortly after our meeting, Hurricane Harvey slammed us and with 5 1/2 feet of water in our house, we lost all our records and computers. So I am trying to catch up with this report for September We delivered supplies to Roy Guess Elementary which we do every year. We were then asked for additional supplies for students who were impacted by the Hurricane, so we bought even more supplies and delivered them to the school. We also had school supplies and t-shirts from District 2-S1 which we delivered to Roy Guess Elementary. We took 12 cases of back packs with each stuffed with notebook paper and miscellaneous items (10 in each), and gave them 24 of the T-shirts with Mr. Leo (Strides guy) to be distributed to children affected by the Hurricane. We helped Zone Chair Ronnie Johnson find the location of supplies shipped to us from New York Lions. After we finally found them, we brought them to Sour Lake on on that Saturday we had links and boudin with cookies and chips. We prepared the food at Lions Park in Sour Lake and put out all the supplies (diapers, personal hygiene items, food, medical supplies, bath soap, ladies items, shoes, boots, socks, diapers and animal food for the people to pick out what they needed. We gave almost 5 pallets of supplies that day and the left overs were given to local people who were also helping with the Hurricane Recovery. We had two members attend our zone meeting. We distributed some 75 gallons of mold spray and sprayers in our neighborhood which was supplied by District 2-S1. We went out on the day before the Adult Vision Screening at Cathedral of Faith for Commissioner for Pct#4 Jefferson County and setup the room, unloaded the trailer and made all the pre-setup chores. Lion Les Lucas from Port Arthur Founders also helped with this. We had three members at the Vision Screening at Cathedral of Faith here in Beaumont. Lion Charlie Tarver worked the vision chart machine, Lion Robert Blackburn worked the Autorefractor and Lion Billie setup the registration and helped with interviewing. We also had members from Beaumont Founders, Beaumont South-Forest Park, Port Arthur Founders, and Nederland Professional clubs. We screened 83 people. We should have the final tally at the Cabinet meeting. All in all, through all the hard work of cleaning up each of our own houses impacted from the Hurricane, we were able to still be of assistance to our community... just like our motto --WE SERVE. Jacksonville Lions Club During the month of September, Jacksonville Lions Club paid our fifth scholarship of $1,000. Approximately of our members helped with Bill McRae Ford's two "Drive" programs with the funds coming from Lincoln and Ford Motor Companies for each driver who participated. Part of the funds that were raised went to various community projects and the rest went to the Chamber's "Adopt A School" program. Also, as a part of the Jacksonville Rodeo Assn., our JRA Board members worked to make additional plans for our 54th Annual PRCA Rodeo which will be held in May.
33 PAGE 33 RECRUIT, REBUILD, RETAIN Kirbyville Lions Club Our DG Russell Wheeler visited our club on Sept. 21, We were very happy to see him and his wife, and to hear from him. He spoke about all of the catastrophic flooding that hit our area during Harvey. Lions Club International contributed $100,000 to our four districts hard hit in our area. He also talked about the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville. DG Russell installed our new lion, Karen Newton. Her sponsor is Lion Diane Smith. Lion Karen was excited to have the DG do the honors. Also at the meeting was Cub Scout Pack 414. They did a flag ceremony for us. We now have a new flag and the other one will be retired at a later date. The editor of the Kirbyville Banner, our newspaper, was there also. Happy Fall Yall Kirbyville Lions Club Nederland Professional Lions Club Our club members have been extremely busy as I m sure other clubs have in dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Three of our members have had their homes flooded and two remain living with relatives. Our members have put in countless hours of volunteer work helping those in need, from tearing out carpet to many donations of food, clothing, transportation to area airport, cooking, donations of money, school supplies, moving Evacuees to safe places. Over 300 hours of volunteer service. Then as things calmed down we did SPOT screening at two area schools. It will be a while as we try to get our lives back to normal, but we thank God for our lives and the blessings of friends and family. God Bless to all our Lions Family Port Arthur Founders The Port Arthur Founders donated 726 prescription bottles. Delivered a truckload of Champ Industrial Cleaner and one-gallon spray bottles to be used by the city workers of Port Arthur who cannot get to the distribution center for their own cleanup. Five members have been very active in the SPOT children vision screening activities. Have scheduled our make-up White Cane Sale at Bruces on 39th Street on November 4. Supporting the Strides walk with $100 donation. Members have volunteered in relief efforts of the Hurricane Harvey. Our member Lion Captain Frankco Higdon is with the Salvation Army and we are trying to help them as they lost all their buildings, equipment, etc. If you wish to help our local Salvation Army in Port Arthur, please send your contribution directly to the Port Arthur Salvation Army. Otherwise any contribution to the national organization must be used for public needs or assistance. Port Neches Lions Club This month our club was pleased to have District Governor Russell and Linda Wheeler visit with our club. Members continued to assist others after Hurricane Harvey by working with Emergency Management and Red Cross at the Airport, housed and fed First Responders, provided meals and clean kits to residents of the area, helped to remove damaged sheetrock, delivered food, supplies, and clothing to a church in Port Arthur (La Iglesias del Pueblo), and delivered non-perishable food and clothing donated by friends in Diboll, Texas and Sneedville, Tennessee to the Community Care Outreach Facility in Nederland. We are currently working with our nurses of PNGISD to identify and assist children in need. We have had five referrals for eyeglasses and exams for students at
34 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 3 PAGE 34 Woodcrest Elementary, Van Buren Elementary, Port Neches Middle School, and PNG High School. Members continued to collect can tabs and we collected 92 pairs of eyeglasses and 7 pairs of lenses. The Sour Lake Lions Club We have been busy helping in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Lions Brian and Brittany Johnson were in charge of the relief shelter at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church for the entire time it was open. These two lions cooked meals along with help from others in the community. The very first evening Lion Brittany cooked three pots of soup. Lion Ronnie Johnson provided Bar-B- Q from "The Barn" along with side dishes one day. Lion Traeger helped deliver meals to those in Sour Lake who were unable to come to the shelter by using the family Polaris Ranger. After the folks left the shelter Brittany and Traeger accompanied a man and his wife who had no help at all to their home to further aid them with their clean-up. These two Lions had the use of a small John Deere Tractor with a front-end loader to help haul the contents of the home to the road to be discarded. Lion Brittany took the couple to the insurance adjustor and to shop for an automobile. Lion Ronald Johnson has worked for three days helping in a home in Beaumont. Lion Lou Ann Johnson has been washing clothes at her home in Sour Lake while taking care of the child of Lion Brittany who was just too young to be at the site of the house that had the flood water in it. Lion Randy Richard worked as a pharmacist for three days even though he had retired because no other pharmacist could get in to Sour Lake and citizens of our town badly needed their prescriptions filled. If he had not been there and willing to work many folks would have been without important drugs. Lion Mindy Van Colen was busy checking on all persons who were shut in by the high water to make sure that all were okay and not in need of emergency care. The members of the club each found a way to serve and will continue to do so in the days and weeks to follow. South County Breakfast Lions Club Activities for September included putting out the flag on Labor Day in front of Nederland businesses 1VDG Chris Gunstream visited to give us needed info. Purchased a Legacy Hole at Texas Lions Camp Tournament.
