3 VOLUME 16 ISSUE 10 PAGE 3 President's Message The pages of LION Magazine during the early years of Lions in the 1920s were filled with stories such as The Purpose of Lions, The Meaning of Lionism and The Value of Lions. A businessman s club dedicated to service was still a novel concept, and it was as if Lions had to convince themselves that they were on the right track. The uncertainty led Lions to question whether Lions Clubs would even survive. During my lifetime I have seen organizations formed with the highest ideals flourish for a time, then drop into comparative unimportance. Will that be the fate of Lionism? I hope not, wrote District Governor A. Baker of Cheyenne, Wyoming, in January But Lions stayed the course. They stuck with service. Fellowship was part of membership. But service was paramount. Activities Make the Club was the headline for a column in 1927 by International President Irving Camp of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Show me a club that simply meets and eats, and I will show you a club that has failed to respond to the call of service as invited in the very principles of our great, unselfish organization, he wrote. Rapidly approaching our Centennial in 2017, we now know that our forebears were right. Service is what makes a Lion. It s what we do. It s who we are. That has never been more evident than over the past couple of years. We set a goal to serve 100 million people by June 30, The four campaigns have been Engaging Youth, Sharing the Vision, Relieving the Hunger and Protecting the Environment. We wondered whether we d reach the goal because clubs typically had reported to Lions Clubs International serving 8 million people annually (but we knew the true figure was higher). I m elated to tell you that in early September we reached our goal of serving 100 million people. Take pride in being part of an association that lives up to its amazing ideals. Like Lions of yesteryear, we put service first. But unlike them, we are confident we will be here for a long, long time! Thank you for all you do as a Lion, and I hope to see you at the 100th International Convention in Chicago June 30-July 4, Very truly yours, Chancellor Bob Corlew Your International President

8 VOLUME 16 ISSUE 10 PAGE 8 Spot Sample Letter to Pre-School, Nursery, Daycare Dear Head Start/Nursery School Director, The Lions Club wishes to inform you that it now has the capability of performing pediatric eye screenings of pre-school children, ages six-months old through 5 years. Members of our Lions Club have been trained in the use of the PediaVision Spot Vision Screener and are available to perform screenings at your location at any time. We can screen toddlers and infants from 6months. The vision screener we use is capable of screening for Astigmatism, Myopia, Hyperopia, Anisometropia, Strabismus, Amblyopia, and Anisocoria. The individual screening takes just a few seconds and is performed from a distance of about three feet. There is no physical contact with the child and no eye drops are administered. Our equipment provides a print-out of the results for each individual which is given to you for forwarding to the parent. We provide parent consent forms and cover letters for you to send to the parents prior to the screening date. It is important to understand that this is only a screening and does not constitute an examination or diagnosis of vision problems. This service is offered free of charge by the local Lions Club under the Lions Eye Health Program administered by the District 2S1 Charities Lions Eye Screening Committee. If the children at your facility do not currently receive regular eye screenings, please contact me to discuss how and when we can provide this vital service. I can be reached at Sincerely yours,

17 VOLUME 16 ISSUE 7 PAGE 17 Dear Lions, Imagine the joy of a grandparent who gets to see their grandchild for the first time. Imagine the pain of a father who once provided for his family, but now no longer can because a preventable disease stole his sight. These are the reasons why SightFirst is dedicated to providing eye care to underserved communities and fighting preventable blindness. One of our key partners in SightFirst is the World Health Organization (WHO). Through our partnership with the WHO, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) receives technical support for SightFirst initiatives as well as three other areas of importance: our Global Childhood Blindness Initiative, our Diabetic Eye Disease Initiative, and eye care initiatives in China. The results of the partnership are impressive. LCIF has established 45 child-friendly eye care centers in 30 countries, developed a tool to help countries improve upon the measures of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy care, and eliminated trachoma as a public health threat in China. Because of what the WHO makes possible for SightFirst and our other LCIF initiatives, I am proud to announce the renewal of our agreement with the WHO. The partnership LCIF has with the WHO has been tremendously successful and we are very pleased to have extended our relationship. We are proud to be working with an organization who wants to see progress as much as we do and we look forward to future achievements. Sincerely, Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

We had a Hamburger Social at Frontier Village on Friday night and had time to visit with each other; Then on Saturday we started about 4:00 a.m. and completed our project around 3:00 p.m. It was a fun weekend and we had lots of compliments on our food. Nederland Professional Lions Club Nederland Professional Lions Club has been very busy with Low Vision Eye Screening and SPOT. In Feb. we screened 15 children and referred 2 to see a Dr. We also had 8 members attend the zone meeting. In March we participated in 3 Low Vision Screenings, where 154 were screened, 2 referred, gave 13 readers and 85 glasses. SPOT screened 26 children and referred 4. We also trained 3 members on the SPOT camera. For Centennial Project, we replaced our two Lion signs on the corner of Boston Ave. & Twin City Hwy., that welcomes visitors to our area. We had 5 members attend the TLC work day on April 1st and served around 1000 volunteers breakfast and lunch. We held a very successful White Cane on April 8th. Also for April we delivered backpacks filled with food to two Nederland Elementary Schools, for children in need of afterschool assistance. We still collect used eyeglasses and have been collecting used prescription bottles. We have 5 from our club who will be attending the District Governor Convention in Nacogdoches. Port Arthur Founders Three Port Arthur Founders worked at the Texas Lions Camp during the weekend of April 1 at the camp work day. They helped District 2S1 prepare breakfast and lunch for approximately 500 volunteers who worked at the camp on that weekend. Lion Pat Brady presented a program on Leader Dogs at the first meeting of the month. The second meeting was held in conjunction with the club's Legacy Project, the planting of an oak tree honoring the memory of Lion Howard Collins. Pictures are included in this newsletter. Lions Debby Parker, Les Lucas, Sue Oberg, Nancy Fuller and Cindy Drake were the committee who planned, prepared and served for the Founders on this worthwhile project. PDG James Browning and his partner in service, Lion Jayne, attended the ceremony as well as Lion Howard's son, Billy Collins and Lion Howard's sister-in-law Virginia Avery. The tree was planted on the grounds of the O. W. Collins Elderly Apartments in Port Arthur. O. W. Collins, for whom the complex was named, was Lion Howard's father. He and Lion Howard had served on the board of these apartments. After the planting, a reception was held for the visitors and residents of the apartments. PDG James Browning presented Lion Les Lucas a Jack Weich award for his exemplary service at the Camp. Lion Pat Brady was honored with an International Presidents Award for Service at the district convention. He and Lion Jennie Brady were awarded a Jack Weich award together at the convention. Port Neches Lions Club In the month of April, our club met at the Port Neches Pizza Inn instead of our regular location due to ongoing construction. We held a business meeting wherein club officers were elected and we planned for our two upcoming fundraisers. First up is Riverfest where our club sells the pit passes for entry into the pit area for Thunder on the Neches. Our activity will be Saturday, May 6th and Sunday, May 7th. On Saturday, May 20th from 10am to 2pm, our club will be holding a BBQ sale in the Market Basket Parking Lot in Port Neches (Hwy 365 and Hwy 366). This month we continued to collect eyeglasses for recycling and participated in the collection of medication bottles. Members attended the April 1st workday at the Lions Camp and members also attended the District Convention on April 22nd in Nacogdoches.
