An effective leadership team provides the vision, guidance and motivation necessary for our association to continue to fulfill its mission of providing quality, relevant service to c o m m u n i t i e s around the world. Members of the GMT and GLT work together to identify, develop and encourage opportunities for present and future Lions leaders, and to develop m e m b e r s h i p through service and engagement. 8 8 Lions help give the gift of sight In a joint venture between the Eden Lions and the Knysna Lions Clubs, yet another young man from George has been assisted to regain the gift of sight. On 26 September, 17 year-old Stephen Faral of Blanco was given a cornea transplant at the George Eye Clinic. This is the second cornea transplant organised by the Eden and Knysna Lions Clubs within the past six weeks. If it were not for the swift action of Lion Rick Clutton and Lion Olwen Toms, both of whom are the Brightsight Chairpersons for their respective Lions Clubs, Stephen would have become completely blind in the near future. Lions Operation Brightsight is an initiative of Lions Clubs international, to provide the gift of sight to people around the world. Thanks to the staff and Doctors Roux and Smith at the George Eye Clinic for their invaluable assistance in performing the cornea transplant. The Eden Lions Club recently sponsored their third school-based Leo club, at Thembalethu High School. Members of the Eden Lions visited Thembalethu High School on Thursday 23 August, to officially induct 15 learners into the Thembalethu Leos Club. The members were presented with badges, shirts and their official charter document, which welcomes them into the international family of Leo clubs. Leos is a junior division of Lions Clubs International. Most Leo clubs operate from schools or universities and give young people a platform for community service. Charlene Theron, a member of the Eden Lions club, is the guiding Lion in charge of the Thembalethu Leos. Her job is to mentor the Leos in identifying various needs in their community that they can assist with. The club has already managed to secure donations from businesses in George and recently visited Ethembeni creche with a donation of clothes, toys, plates and educational items.

9 The sun shining on the Outeniqua mountains on Saturday 15 September was a welcome sight for the Service Clubs of George as they gathered at the Outeniqua Railway Museum. The occasion? To welcome a group of approximately 40 pensioners who were being treated to a delicious tea and a trip up the mountain in the Outeniqua Power Van. This is the second inter-service club project to be introduced to George by Lion Rick Clutton of the Eden Lions Club. Clutton firmly believes that the people of George need to get to know all the various clubs who volunteer their time and talents in service of the Eden community. There was nothing but smiles on faces at the end of the two-hour trip on the Pensioners Puff Puff, as the project was fondly named. It was a first-time experience for many and the cloudless day provided panoramic views across George all the way to Mossel Bay. Along the way, the tour guide provided the passengers with many interesting historical and botanical facts that many did not know before. The service clubs involved in the Pensioners Puff-Puff are: the Eden Lions, George Lions, George Round Table, George Rotary, Vryburghers, Outeniqua MOTHS and Garden Route Ladies Circle. Look out for their next inter-club project, the Santa Flight, to be held in December. 10 10 OKTOBERFEST IN (By Jan Hopkins) Oktoberfest has its origins in Germany as far back as 1810, when the original fest was held from October 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, and nowadays over six million revelers from all over the world flock to Germany to enjoy the largest, two week long, beer drinking party on earth, consuming an amazing 16 million litres of beer!! On a much smaller scale, but no less noisy, the Fort Beaufort Lions hosted their own Oktoberfest last Friday in the Alfred Lawrence Hall, which had been transformed into a little piece of Germany. Draught Castle was on tap, beer drinking oompah music was playing loudly, and the aroma of Eisbeins cooking was irresistible. Not sure if people were flocking in because of the music or the delicious smell of food, but flock they did, and by all accounts they were enjoying themselves. Mufasa, the Lion Mascot, was a welcome guest and did his rounds making sure everyone was happy; he even sold a lot of raffle tickets, which was won by Roseanne Fetting. All the Lions, their partners and friends had worked hard to make the evening a fantastic success, and it was worth it because only good comments were received, and thumbs up for the food and atmosphere. Looks like an Oktoberfest will have to be an annual event on the Lions calendar, thanks to everyone involved and well done on a great evening. P.S. To all enthusiastic bike riders, the date for the next Lions MTB Challenge is Sunday 8 September 2013

The 24 th very successful joint World Service Day project, co-ordinated by Port Rex Lions, was much appreciated by Senior Citizens throughout East London. Well Done Zone 5. 11

Sudokopret by Huis AA Tomlinson.

A get together of PA service organisations.
