Funding Opportunities.

FOA: MOBC PAR Title: Mechanisms of Behavior Change in the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders Three Possible Mechanisms: R01 (PAR ) R21 (PAR ) R03 (PAR ) Must Submit Letter of Intent Three Submission Dates March 17, 2016 We are working on renewing the PAR

MOBC PAR Rationale for PAR Provides a special review committee comprised of MOBC researchers Encourages INNOVATIVE & TRANS-DISCIPLINARY applications across multiple domains (e.g., neuroscience) R03 mechanism encourages junior investigators (e.g., post-docs) to submit and permits secondary data analyses Encourages applications that examine MOBC inside and outside the context of treatments (e.g., non-treatment seekers; self-change process) Encourages applications with a strong methodological focus (e.g., dynamic systems approach)

MOBC PAR SUBMISSION CHARACTERISTICS First two submissions and grants review have already occurred June 18 th, 2014 (First PAR Review) June 2 nd and 8th, 2015 (Second PAR Reviews) Applications 2014 Initial 2015 Revised Applications 2015 Total Funded R R R Total Overall success rate 7/19 = 37%

MOBC PAR Examples of Funded PAR Studies MOBC Funded Grants (N=7) Project Impact: In the Moment Project from Automatic Capture by Triggers fmri and Treatment Response with Binge Drinking Adolescents Perceived alcohol reward value and risk: Neural Correlates and Treatment Effects Psychological and Neural Mechanisms of Mindfulness and Cognitive Retraining Intervention Ingredients and Mechanisms of an Efficacious Motivational Interview Meta-Regression to Identify the SBIRT structure and Content on Outcome Shifts in Behavioral Allocation Patterns as an Alcohol Recovery Mechanism

Other Program Announcements Alcohol Use Disorders: Treatment, Services, and Recovery Research R01: PA R21: PA R03: PA Research Domain #2: Behavioral Therapies and Mechanisms of Behavioral Change Conduct longitudinal studies of the natural history of behavioral change in drinking behavior. Transdisciplinary research including genetic, electrophysiological, and imaging techniques is encouraged. Innovative measures of real-time cognitive and affective change also should be developed. Reanalyze existing studies (secondary analyses) with new models looking at potential mechanisms of change prior to treatment, and within, outside, and after treatment. Conduct experiments to elucidate the causal relationship between proposed mechanisms of behavioral change and treatment outcomes. This program announcement is being updated

NIH Initiative Basic Behavior and Social Science Opportunity Network (OppNet) Trans-NIH initiative, established Nov. 2009, involving 24 NIH institutes and 5 Centers Goal: Increase NIH funding of basic behavioral and social sciences research (b-bssr). Mechanisms and processes that influence behavior at the individual, group, community and population level. Basic mechanisms funded ($71.6 million; N= 167 grants;): self-regulation, behavioral maintenance, decision making, stress, stigma, sleep, social environment, culture, resilience Plans underway to continue OppNet (FY 15-20)

NIH Initiative Science of Behavior Change (SOBC) Goal: Identify common mechanisms that drive initiation and maintenance of behavior change across disorders Encouraged multi-disciplinary approaches: social psychology, behavioral economics, and cognitive and affective neuroscience RFA - 10 R01s (2010); 7 admin supplements (2013) SOBC re-approved for next 5 years: 4 RFAs (in review): self regulation, stress, interpersonal/social processes Identify the most promising intervention targets Develop appropriate measures and approaches to engage targets Validate putative targets against disease outcomes

Recap NIAAA remains committed to MOBC research Take advantage of the PAR and other FOAs keep those applications coming! Focus on INNOVATION & IMPACT Funding support available from both NIAAA and NIH
