1 Stoke on Trent : Professionals Guide This guide provides information about Stoke on Trent programme and some practical tools, resources and suggestions of how to use the Five Ways in your area of work. Stoke on Trent The national strategy No Health Without Mental Health acknowledges that mental wellbeing is central to our quality of life and important for the healthy functioning of families, communities and society. The strategy includes an objective around promoting mental health for everyone in order that Fewer people will develop mental health problems by starting well, developing well, working well, living well and aging well. We want to encourage individuals, communities and organisations to adopt the Five Ways to better Wellbeing identified by the New Economics Foundation. This means more individuals, communities and organisations building 5 actions into their everyday lives to improve their wellbeing Connect, Be active, Take notice, Keep learning, Give. Stoke on Trent programme aims to support organisations to create opportunities for people in Stoke on Trent to improve their wellbeing by taking up the. The Stoke on Trent programme provides: Access to materials including posters, leaflets, postcards, credit cards, booklets. Materials can be downloaded by visiting nhs.uk/services/wellbeing.htm and hard copies can be ordered from the health improvement resource service Access to information on local activities available for opportunities to take up the Five Ways Access to ideas and examples of how to use the Based on the New Economics Foundation/Foresight Mental Capital and Wellbeing

2 Getting Involved The are designed to provide a platform to talk to people about their wellbeing in a simple and informal way. A consideration for the can be incorporated into existing work programmes/activities in many ways. Adapt your programme to include elements of the. 3 Sample Leaflet Keep learning It is important to look after your mental wellbeing as well as your physical health. These five ways to wellbeing can help you do this. With the people around you - with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours, at home, work, school or in your local community. Make the effort to keep in touch and spend time with the people that matter to you, and to meet and get to know new people. Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Garden. Dance. Discover a physical activity you enjoy and one that suits your level of mobility and fitness. Your local leisure or community centre will have lots to offer, whether you like to be active on your own or in a group. You can see your GP for advice if you have any health concerns in relation to physical activity. Keep learning Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you. Appreciate what matters. Spending time close to nature, for instance walking in your local park or watching birds in your garden can help with this, as can meditation or prayer. Take a course. Take on a different responsibility at work. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Rediscover an old interest. Your local library will have information on a wide range of learning opportunities in your community from reading groups and evening classes to college courses. Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Voluntary Action Stoke can tell you about some of the volunteering options you might like to try.
