We use a strengths-based, culturally-sensitive and gender-sensitive practice model. Our services covers the LGA's of Whittlesea, Hume, Moreland, Nillumbik, Banyule, Darebin and Yarra. The Parentzone Northern team is now running at full capacity with our final staff position recently filled by Joanne Templeton, who brings her expertise in parenting children with trauma, disability and autism-spectrum presentations from Parentzone Southern. Jo will join Kerry Wise, Dalal Sleiman, Dominic Alford, Pauline Camilleri and Tamara Neal in planning and delivering our programs for We work closely with the Anglicare Family Services teams in Lalor, Preston, Craigieburn and Broadmeadows, as well as the Broadmeadows Women s Community

2 House, to broaden our team capacity and enable client referrals in and out of our programs. We can be contacted on or for a brochure or further information about our programs or any other questions you may have about our services. Parents Building Solutions is a strength-based, co-design approach where parents and facilitators work together to build and enhance participants parenting skills. The PBS delivery is based on years of ParentZone practice wisdom that includes a core of foundation material combined with flexible activities mixed and matched to parent needs. Through the parents sharing of successful stories/experiences with others in a safe and supportive environment, each session aims to help parents: build positive family relationships; learn and practice effective parenting strategies; practice new skills each week with take-home exercises (homework) gain confidence in their ability to problem solve parenting issues Parentzone Northern is part of a regional Parentzone. Staff from across the regions have been meeting to share good practice and develop innovative programmes in areas such as working with migrant parents, parenting children with a disability, programmes for dads and parenting after violence. We look forward to seeing you at some of our programs in 2017! What we do Parentzone Northern News provides information on Parenting Programs, Parenting activities and Support Services that are available in the Northern Region to assist parents in their parenting role. While Parentzone Northern provides the editorial support for this Newsletter, the intention is that is provides a voice for all Parenting Programs in the North, in particular for the Northern Parent Educator s Network. 4 Parentzone Northern Programme Details Parents Building Solutions Anglicare Parentzone, Community Hubs and Meadow Heights PS have come together to provide a parenting course for parents and carers in the school. The aim is to Deliver parenting topics that you are interested in, adapt topics to the groups needs, focus on positive relationships and building your strengths as a parent. We aim to be flexible to the needs of each group we work with. So, we will explore what parents want in the 1st session and then discuss these topics over the next 5 sessions. This means your group will be perfect for you! This group is in partnership between Parentzone Northern, Community Hubs and MHPS. 5 Parents Building Solutions - Growing Great Kids This programme can assist parents to help kids deal with their frustration and anger, discuss and share strategies and understand the challenges faced by children at school. Parentzone Northern and Life without Barriers have come together to provide this 6 week programme for families living in the Epping area. Parents and carers will gain a new insight and understanding of the difficulty teenagers many go through. 6 Growing Connections A group for mothers and children. This is a group for mothers to improve their connections with their primary school aged children. Sometimes the mother-child bond can be disrupted for a range of reasons. Growing connections aims to strengthen bonds, improve self esteem and reconnect though art. In this session we will talk about what it means to be a dad and the ways you can raise healthy, happy kids. Parentzone Northern and Moreland City Council have come together to provide this session. 7 ParentZone Northern and Family Services News Anglicare's Parentzone Northern in collaboration with Anglicare Northern Family Services programs have designed a program specifically for Family Services clients called "Getting to know your Kids". In Term 1 we ran 2 one off sessions and will be doing the same for Term 2. The areas of parenting we cover will include: Positive communication with your children Understanding children's behaviour Being a parent of a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Childhood Development In Terms 3 and 4 we will be running a 6 week group with each session being one-off and attendance will not be reliant on going to every session. News from other Northern Suburbs Agencies NILLUMBIK SHIRE COUNCIL Nillumbik Shire Council provides Parenting in Perspective sessions for parents of children aged 0-6 years on a Thursday evening. These sessions are free for Nillumbik residents. From its origins as a vital support system for the first wave of Greek migrants, to supporting the development of a strong community over 40 years in the making. And now paving the way for whole new generation to realise their potential. PRONIA provides direct services to the Australian Greek community throughout metropolitan Melbourne. Direct services include: generalist case work, family and marital counselling, information provision (income support, social security, health settlement issues), advocacy and referral, financial assistance, consultations, community development and community education. The Family & Community Services Unit provides direct services to individual, families and group support programs addressing the various needs of the community. 10 Most people at some stage in their lives may be faced with difficulties which can effectively be dealt with by talking to a professional and experienced Counsellor, who can assist in developing strategies and ways of dealing with personal and relationship/family issues. PRONIA is a non-for-profit organization providing various services to Greek and culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Some of our services are: Individual and/or couple or family counselling Education and training around relationship issues Support (Emotional and Practical) Advocacy and referral to other specialized services. PRONIA provides also services to organizations who work with Greek and culturally and linguistically diverse clients- Pronia s Family And Relationships Service is able to provide culturally inclusive practice training and support on Effective Engagement of Culturally and linguistically Diverse clients and consultation to agencies who wish to be more culturally sensitive or who have specific issues with clients from a culturally and linguistically diverse background. Services are provided in the communities of Brunswick, Inner Melbourne, Moreland city, Eastern Middle Melbourne and the Southern region of Melbourne. The counselling service is provided in Brunswick and Oakleigh. SPECIAL NEEDS OF VULNERABLE & DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES Many people with young children face particular issues and have special needs in the area of relationships, parenting, and family life. This is even more complex for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD) who may have particular needs. Services offered by PRONIA include counselling, skill development, support group programs, and education. PRONIA provides services to families, particularly those who are vulnerable, disadvantaged or live in disadvantaged communities to improve family functioning and safety and child wellbeing and development. Help is also available for grandparents and extended family to strengthen relationships with grandchildren after parental divorce or separation. PRONIA S CLIENT GROUP: Our Service is available to families, men and their partners, particularly those with young children. We assist families to understand what services and programs are available in the community and facilitate access to these. We promote, encourage and foster collaborations between community organizations to enable us to provide a more specialized service to our consumers. COUNSELLING SERVICE: Counselling is offered to individuals, couples or family combinations to help them manage their relationships, Bilingual workers with expertise in working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities can support clients to become emotionally stronger and develop skills to better manage their issues. The Father Inclusive Practice Network (FIPN) is a network of professionals working with fathers who wish to build their practice skills in working with fathers in a variety of community settings. The FIPN meets quarterly to network, share program information activities, build collaborative partnerships and to hear a presentation by a guest speaker on a topic relevant to working with fathers. The Purpose of (FIPN): Raise the profile of father-specific programs and services Identify and address gaps in service delivery for fathers Share information and network with others professionals Explore opportunities for partnerships, collaboration or Co-facilitation of group programs for fathers Promote father-specific programs, projects and events Enhance the knowledge-base of professionals working With families Dr. Catherine Wade (Principle Research Specialist) from the Parenting Research Centre was a guest speaker at the November 2016 FIPN meeting, her research provided a wealth Of information highlighting the importance of Father Inclusive Practices.
