Asset-Based Community Deveopment Using what s strong to dea with what s wrong, and making what s strong stronger. The community is a spontaneous pace But systems Hey! Let s make are not! things happen! OK! WE coud... OUCH!!... Training Programmes 2016
The Approach ABCD stands for Asset-Based Community Deveopment, an approach deveoped by Professors John McKnight and Jody Kretzmann in Chicago. After decades of research they set up the Asset-Based Community Deveopment (ABCD) Institute in 1996 at Northwestern University and have supported the growth of ABCD across the word every since. ABCD considers oca assets as the primary buiding bocks of sustainabe community deveopment. It offers a robust evidence-based framework for socia change, chaenging us to consider the foowing questions: What is it that communities can do best? What do communities require hep with? What do communities need outside agencies to do for them? The ABCD approach heps us to find answers to each of these questions. It can aso show us how to make better use of the resources that we a have or have access to, and how to support one another to use them to the benefit of whoe communities. ABCD is the way by which we can buid heathier, safer, prosperous and more incusive communities. The Training Offer We have yet to find a sector, topic, organisation or community in which ABCD cannot be appied. It s the beauty of the approach. Its reevance to everyone and to pretty much anything in our communities, means that we Nurture Deveopment are invited to train, create and impement deveopment programmes with hundreds of organisations across a wide range of areas. Our one and two day workshops can focus on the foowing areas: 1. Whoe Community Transformation. 2. Heath and We Being. 3. Socia Care. 4. Safer Communities. 5. Housing & Community Spaces. 6. Ageing we in pace. 7. Recovery.

Chris Shaw has worked in community menta heath and substance and acoho recovery for 20 years. 15 of those years have been in senior management roes, cuminating in being CEO of a medium sized Charity for 10 years. However, it is substance misuse and addictions recovery which has dominated Mark s professiona s ife. Mark Stephenson He beieves that recovery shoud be rooted in the community, - by the community, for the community - and he is passionate about the potentia key roe that recovery coaching can pay in that vision. Sarah Frost joined Nurture Deveopment in She has worked aongside coeagues in Leeds City Counci and Kirkees counci as an ABCD Guide. He has aso ed evauations on topics such as juvenie justice, neighbourhood revitaisation and confict resoution.
The Experience We bring the foowing to our training: We are recognised thought eaders Our thinking on ABCD has been pubished in academic journas and pubications in the UK and abroad. Cormac continues to work with Professor John McKnight and other members of the ABCD Institute facuty on the ongoing deveopment of the approach. We have a conceptua and on-the-ground understanding of ABCD that ensures that we can advise and train at both poicy and practice eves. We are estabished trainers in both the UK and abroad During 2015 we have deivered over 100 workshops and keynotes to 10,000+ peope. We have worked on a diverse range of subject matters, incuding pubic safety, pubic heath, incusion, chidren and young peope, oder peope, socia care, community housing, prison reform, recovery and many others besides. A of our workshops are informed by what we are earning in neigbourhoods throughout the UK and beyond, where we have spent severa years working side by side with practitioners and oca residents. We understand what works (and what doesn t): Since 1996 we have buid up practica knowedge and experience in the impementation of ABCD and other strengths-based approaches in Europe, Africa and North America. We have had successes and faiures and beieve in sharing our earning from both. There is no one right way to do ABCD and we have earned, through experience, how to navigate the different socio-poitica environments. We are doing it in a broad range of communities across the UK today. Currenty, as we as deivering workshops, we are working directy with Community Buiders, oca residents and commissioners to focus on what is strong, not what is wrong. This aows us to bring rea exampes and stories of how ABCD is working in a wide variety of communities. Learning by doing Our workshops are dynamic and interactive. We beieve that peope change their ives by doing, not by passivey istening, and our workshops refect that beief. During our sessions we introduce and use the toos, activities and exercises that we have deveoped, to bring ABCD aive in communities and neighbourhoods. The community is a spontaneous pace But systems are not! Hey! Let s make things happen! OK! WE coud... OUCH!!...

Housing, Community Spaces and Asset-Based Community Deveopment An Overview The importance of good quaity housing and the connection between housing and heath has ong been recognised. However, there is sti much work to do to connect their separate systems (Buggins et a, 2012). Historicay responses often took the form of institutions such as hospitas, hostes or care homes. More recenty, the fundamenta importance of dignity and choice have been recognised and the benefits of maintaining independence and having one s own front door have been ceary demonstrated, whist the personaisation of care services is deveoping. Yet none of us can ive as isands. Athough we vaue choice and sef-determination, we thrive on interdependence rather than independence. Services, even if highy personaised and respectfu of persona choice and dignity, cannot meet a our needs as human beings. They are often necessary but are never sufficient for our heath and webeing. (Extract from HLN Think piece of A Strengths based Approach to Housing, Cormac Russe & Lawrence Mier). These workshops invite housing providers to expore how you can use your strengths and resources to grow more connected communities. Community Housing, Socia Spaces and ABCD One-Day Workshop What wi you earn? This workshop wi: Give you an understanding of the history of ABCD, reating it to your experience of community deveopment and housing and community spaces. Expore the reationship between the core principes of community housing & ABCD. Define a heathy community that can faciitate integrated Community Housing and Community Spaces and identify the six buiding bocks or assets that can be used to buid one. Expore how these buiding bocks can be more effectivey identified, connected and mobiised to action in oca neighbourhoods. Examine the reationship between institutions and communities using the Geometry esson (Circes and Trianges). Identify the ABCD Toos for Change: Learning Conversations & Asset Mapping. What wi you be abe to do? You wi have a good understanding of ABCD and the contribution that ABCD can make to the neighbourhood where you ive/work. You wi have identified actions that you coud take that woud improve the conditions for a more integrated citizen-ed approach to Community Housing, Socia care and heath.
Housing, Community Spaces and Asset-Based Community Deveopment An Asset-Based Approach to Buiding enduring Communities; Beyond the business of Buidings Two-Day Workshop on ABCD, Housing and Community Spaces What wi you earn? This workshop wi: Give you an understanding of the history of ABCD, reating it to your experience of community deveopment, focusing on Community Safety. Consider mainstream approaches from needs-based to asset-based with a focus on Community Safety. Hep you identify where and how ABCD can change communities and peopes ives using the 12 Domains of Change exercise. Show you how to bring ABCD to ife in a neighbourhood using ABCD principes and practices. Use stories and case studies of ABCD in action from our Learning Sites, in the UK and around the word, with video input from citizens, Community Buiders and commissioners. Invove you in activities and exercises, e.g. Asset Mapping and Learning Conversations that you can then use to introduce ABCD to the neighbourhoods where you ive and/or work. Expain how to estabish strategic mini grants. Show you how to evauate the outcomes of ABCD in reation to Community Safety. What wi you be abe to do after this workshop? Take ABCD into action in iving neighbourhoods in a way that is respectfu of the oca context; and utimatey create safer, heathier, more economicay and environmentay vibrant paces to ive. You wi be abe to use what s strong in the neighbourhood where you ive and/or work to dea with what s wrong, but aso make what s strong, stronger. Through conversations and reationship buiding with Nurture Deveopment communities are now appying ABCD principes to buid, strengthen and create incusive and we- -resourced communities as part of an approach to improving heath and webeing and reducing inequaities.
