3 From The Office of Greek Life The spring 2012 semester brought about a lot of exciting changes and additions to both the Office of Greek Life and the Northern Arizona University (NAU) Greek community. In the fall 2011 edition of the Greek Speak newsletter, we dedicated a page to the introduction of Alpha Phi, the newest sorority on-campus. After using the spring 2012 semester to build-up their chapter roster, we are excited to report that Alpha Phi added 78 members to their chapter. Those 78 members have been very active in collaborating with the current chapters of Greek Life by teaming up with them on various community service and philanthropy endeavors. Not only are we are excited to see how much they add to their recruitment numbers during Panhellenic Recruitment in the fall, but also how they continue to contribute to the Greek Life community here at NAU. Not to be outdone by our Panhellenic women, our Interfraternity Council men spent the entire spring 2012 semester re-writing their council bylaws and creating a new fall rush event called Rush Fest. Rush Fest 2012 will be a large-scale recruitment event held on Sunday, September 9th at the field next to the Wall Aquatic Center. This showcase event is the first of its kind for our fraternity men and we are optimistic that it will increase the visibility and enrollment numbers of our fraternities. We are hopeful that Rush Fest will become a longstanding Greek Life tradition. Last, but certainly not least, our United Greek Council has made phenomenal strides in establishing its identity amongst the Greek Life community (which you can read more about on page 8). The UGC Showcase is scheduled for September 10th at the University Union Ampitheater and will allow our UGC chapters to creatively display their pride and values to potential new members. Equally as exciting is the establishment of the UGC wing in Mountain View Hall. The UGC wing is the first of its kind and will bring together four of the five UGC chapters in one central location. Both the Office of Greek Life and the UGC agree that this opportunity will strengthen the bond between the UGC chapters and allow them to grow as a community. This summer will allow the Office of Greek Life to recharge its batteries. Needless to say, we are very excited about the positive changes happening within Greek Life and look forward to the accomplishments of our community in the fall of 2012! 7 Court Is Now In Session The peer judicial system is alive and well with the newly revamped Greek Accountability Board N ew to NAU Greek Life this year is the Greek Accountability Board (GAB). This student-run organization works closely with advisor Jason Perry to make NAU s Greek community safer and cleaner. The GAB is made up of seven NAU students that serve as justices and hear cases. Olivia Drummond is the VP of Judicial and myself, Amber Diagostine, resides as the Chief Justice. All of the students on the board belong to a sorority or fraternity on campus, allowing the GAB to represent different groups and ensure everyone is unbiased. The purpose of the Greek Accountability Board is to maintain an orderly and stable Greek community where the freedoms which the members are entitled may be protected while accomplishing the chapter s purpose and participating in its activities. This program is developed as a supplement to the NAU Student Code of Conduct, Article 5-403, the Disciplinary Procedures which are parallel with the Residence Life procedures and the Arizona state laws. Furthermore, the Greek Accountability Board has the authority to enforce all Greek codes, regulations, and guidelines as provided by the Interfraternity Council, College Panhellenic Council and United Greek Council bylaws. This program allows the Greek community to take responsibility for its own actions and to set forth procedures whereby those who are accused of violating the rules may be afforded due process and, when appropriate, fair sanctioning. The board hears violations ranging from conflict between fraternities or sororities and actions that violategreek Life policies. Students, administrators, and staff are allowed to file violations. On a specially designed website open only to NAU fraterinities and sororities, memberse can learn about the mission of the GAB, the justices, and, most importantly, file violations. Once a violation is submitted, Jason and Amber review the case and decide if it should be heard. A hearing is then set up and the justices are notified. The accusing party and the accused party are required to attend the hearing unless they choose to have the hearing waived. If waived, the GAB meets to decide what happens. At a hearing, the case plays out in a similar way to a courtroom trial. The charges are read and each party has time to make an opening statement. Witnesses are called and the justices can ask questions. The case ends with closing statements and if the accused party is found guilty, sanctions are decided upon. Once a decision is published, the accused party can choose to appeal. Appeals are handled by Kevin Gemoets, the Coordinator of Greek Life for NAU. This semester has been very successful, as the GAB has heard over 11 cases. We have created a name for our organization and have dealt with various sororities and fraternities. By working with Greek Life members and staff we have begun the process of making our community safer and more responsible. We hold people accountable for their actions, which results in a more positive name for Greek Life. In addition, we hope that we have created better relationships between different groups in Greek Life. As the semester draws to a close, the GAB is looking for new justices for the fall. Applications are being reviewed and interviews are being set up. We hope to continue to get out word about the Greek Accountability Board and someday become a household name in Greek Life. Interest has been increasing so more violations are expected at the beginning of the next semester. I hope to make NAU Greek Life better than ever with fewer rivalries and fewer conflicts between groups. The GAB is unique because it allows Greek Life to handle its own problems and empower the student community. We can make a difference and we plan to! p.5 Greek Speak Spring 2012 written by amber diagostine, gab chief justice

8 Mr. Greek 2012 M r. Greek is a time honored tradition in the Greek Life community at Northern Arizona University. The showcase event, which took place on March 28th, 2012 in the Dubois Ballroom as part of Greek Week, featured 11 men representing eight fraternities performing in front of over 500 members of the Greek Life community. Each and everyone of these gentlemen had one goal in mind prior to entering the Dubois Ballroom: being crowned as Mr. Greek After performing a group dance performance (pictured in the center), the participants either showed a video or did a presentation showing the pride and accomplishments associated with their respective chapters. Devon Mahon of Pi Kappa Phi showed a video displaying his chapter s commitment to their national philanthropy, Push America while Clark Castillo acted out in a film that celebrated the recent achievements of his fraternity. The videos and presentations were just a taste of the creativity on display and increased the crowd s expectations for the individual stage performances planned for later in the evening. p.6 Greek Speak Spring 2012 photos by jacob gross, tau kappa epsilon

9 Fortunately, the Mr. Greek participants did not disappoint. Musical performances were the main attraction as Kenton Kong of Delta Chi played a ukulele number, Tyler Baldwin of Theta Chi showcased his piano skills, and Clark Castillo played an original acoustic number dedicated to NAU sororities. Other stand out performances included Forrest Reed of Phi Sigma Kappa teaching the audience how to make apple crepes and Luke Passalacqua of Phi Delta Theta wowing the audience with romantic wine tricks. Mr. Greek 2012 provided stiff competition for all the participants, but Keton Kong of Delta Chi proved he had the ability to separate himself from the pack. After being crowned Mr. Greek 2012, Kenton joined the rest of his Mr. Greek participants to present a check to the Delta Delta Delta sorority of $4,500, all raised by the Greek community during Greek Week, for the Maggie Conway Scholarship. Maggie was a member of Delta Delta Delta who was involved in a car accident and tragically passed away last semester. The emotional presentation of the check was a reminder about the purpose of Greek Week 2012, but also showed the unity and bond shared by all chapters within the Greek Life community. 10 UnitedWeStand Former United Greek Council President and Current Omega Delta Phi President Michael Teasdale reflects on year one of laying down the foundation for Northern Arizona University s newest fraternity and sorority governing council. U nited Greek Council (UGC) is one of three Greek governing councils under the Office of Greek Life. Currently, the UGC consists of four sororities (Delta Chi Lambda, Gamma Alpha Omega, Gamma Rho Lambda, and Kappa Delta Chi) and one fraternity (Omega Delta Phi). UGC was created to offer all service and social fraternities and sororities an equal voice and representation within the Northern Arizona University Greek system. This council deals with diverse populations as well as diverse organizations who hold different values and principles. The common ground between all organizations is what founded UGC as a council. Each chapter associated with the UGC strives to participate in community service and philanthropies within all surrounding communities which was recognized at this year s Louie Awards Reception where we received the President s Service Award. Some examples of the community service work UGC chapters do for the local community is Omega Delta Phi s Easter Egg Hunt for the children of Killip Elementary and Gamma Alpha Omega s participation in the FACTS carnival at Bushmaster Park. As the UGC continues to grow, we look forward to contributing even more to the Flagstaff, Arizona, and nationwide communities. Another main goal for UGC during its first year of existence was to create a strong campus identity within the university. We were able to achieve this goal by uniting together and increasing our presence on campus. Certainly our community service and philanthropy endeavors helped, but it was also our ability to unite as a council and pursue opportunities that connected us to the Greek Life community and Northern Arizona University. For example, we helped table outside of the University Union for National Hazing Prevention Week and also volunteered to facilitate alcohol awareness discussion in the freshmen residence halls as part of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. In the future, we look forward to participating in more events like the ones mentioned. Another goal for this year was to create a recruitment showcase where each individual chapters can shine a light on their organization through different mediums. It took a long time to figure out the logistics behind the event, but after many discussions, the event is now a reality. We have planned out the UGC Recruitment Showcase next semester and we will be able to show the different perspective of Greek Life that we bring to the table to members of the NAU community. For next year, UGC plans on solidifying our identity through a variety of service and social events within the university. Also for next year the council is working on expansion by helping other organizations become recognized fraternities/sororities on campus. Lastly the United Greek Council mainly just wants to create an environment that feels like a family and is welcome to every person no matter their race, ethnicity, or gender. As my time as UGC President comes to an end, I am thankful for the opportunties I had in helping to lay the foundation of the UGC. In addition, I look forward to seeing the positive contributions our new president, Jasmin Carrillo, will make and watching how her new ideas push the UGC to a newl level. p.8 Greek Speak Spring 2012 written by michael teasdale, former president of the ugc

11 Q&A Interview Making Greek Life Safe for Everyone Stephanie Klein of Chi Omega is prepared to bring peer accountability and responsibility back to Greek Life through GAMMA. Interfraternity Council Public Relations Chair Paxton Debolt chats with Stephanie about GAMMA s future goals in this Q&A. What is GAMMA? GAMMA stands for Greeks Advocating for the Mature Management of Alcohol. It is a student run Greek organization that promotes a safe Greek Life environment. In addition, we promote healthy and safe parties. We are in charge of regulating Greek events where alcohol is involved. Basically, we make sure that everyone is being responsible and safe at any sort of event hosted by members of the Greek Life community. What has GAMMA accomplished in the past year? We have recently turned GAMMA into a programing board so, along with regulating different Greek Life events, we now provide education about risk management to the NAU student body. This is done through the events we have hosted. This year we had three major events: National Hazing Prevention Week, at NAU and the Office of Student Life as a symbol for our student body s goal to fight against hazing practices on college campuses. It was a huge honor and we are very excited that we were recognized for our hard work. What would you like to see GAMMA do in the future? I would like the NAU campus to recognize us as a programing organization that provides a safer environment for all students. This would allow us to work with more organizations on campus that stand for the same message that we do. Having this recognition would also allow us to expand our work that we do on campus by having bigger and better programing that can affect more students. What specific projects are you currently working on? We make sure that everyone is being responsible and safe at any sort of event hosted by members of the Greek Life community. p.9 Greek Speak Spring 2012 Stephanie Klein (above) is currently in her first year as Lead Coordinator for Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol, known throughout the Northern Arizona University Greek Life community simply as GAMMA. National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, and STI/ Safe Spring Break Week. These events have allowed us to extend our education from the Greek community and impact different parts of campus such as the freshman residence halls. Has GAMMA received any recognition for what they have contributed to NAU in the past year? We actually won first place in a photo contest establishing by HazingPrevention.org for our work during National Hazing Prevention Week. For our picture we had students on campus paint and place their hands on a canvas that said Hazing is an extraordinary activity that becomes perversely ordinary as those who engage in it grow desensitized to its inhumanity. Each of the handprints represented a person who believed in a anti-hazing lifestyle. Along with our partners in Residence Hall Association, we later presented this board to Art Farmer, the associate dean of students Currently, we are focusing on our new Hazing Prevention Week campaign. The theme for this next year is Don t haze me bro. We are very excited for this theme cause it will allow us to add a humorous twist to a serious topic and allow us to gain more attention from students. As well as this we are also looking into creating a new safe ride program next year for tequila sunrise. This would involve students and alumni purchasing a five dollar wristband which gives them a ride from mountain view hall to the downtown area and a ride back. The goal of this program is to prevent drunk driving and encourage students to be safe when they are participating in this event. By giving more options for students to safely travel to and from downtown, this will reduce the amount of DUI s which occur in our community making the NAU campus a safer place. written by paxton debolt, ifc public relations
