I wanted to extend a thank you to all of you for supporting me, and the Board, as we all work together to promote play therapy in the state of Michigan. I ve enjoyed my tenure as President Elect, President and Past President. It has given me the opportunity to work with fantastic colleagues both on the Board and as Conference Coordinator. You are an amazing group of clinicians, dedicated to supporting children and their families across the state. I am proud to know you, to work with you, and to train with you. Thank you for giving me these incredible opportunities. I also want to take this time to remind you to register for the East Regional Play Therapy Workshop with Diane Frey. Information for that Workshop follows on the next two pages. Diane is a great presenter and her topic is magical in scope and usefulness. You won t want to miss this Workshop just for the fun of it. Thank you to Robin Bell who has taken over as Conference Coordinator. This is a big job, full of minute details. Give her a nod of thanks and vote of confidence as you have the chance. 3 OVERVIEW: Using Magic in Play Therapy will explore the rationale for using magic, guidelines for using magic, uses of magic in play therapy, appropriate age ranges for implementation, and numerous therapeutic magic tricks which can be used immediately in treatment. Magic tricks represent a novel way to establish rapport, empower clients, instill hope, reframe concerns, improve interpersonal skills, develop group cohesion, build trust, recognize boundaries and problem solve. Therapeutic magic tricks also provide the therapist with opportunities for assessment and using metaphors. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to Identify the rationale for using magic in play therapy. 2. Cite the guidelines for implementing magic tricks in play therapy. 3. Demonstrate at least 10 uses of therapeutic magic. 4. Demonstrate at least 15 therapeutic magic tricks for immediate use in treatment. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Diane Frey, Ph.D., RPT-S, is Professor Emeritus at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio and has been a licensed psychologist in private practice for over 40 years. She is the author or co-author of 17 books and numerous articles and chapters on the topics of play therapy, self-esteem, and the psychosocial needs of the gifted. An internationally recognized speaker, Dr. Frey has conducted seminars in Amsterdam, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. She has appeared on NPR as play therapy expert and has been featured on CBS 20/20. Dr. Frey has served on the board of APT and on the editorial board of APT s journal. In 2008 she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by APT. Over the course of many years MIAPT has invited Dr. Frey to speak at several of its statewide conferences for which she is very honored. Exit U.S. 23 at exit 37B (Ann Arbor). Traveling west on Washtenaw Avenue, after approx 1.5 mi, stay right on Washtenaw at the Y, heading into town. Church is located on the left shortly after you cross Hill Street. From the West - Traveling on I-94 west, take State Street exit and turn left, following State St north past the athletic campus and into town. Turn right onto Hill Street at the light, then left onto Washtenaw Ave. The church is nearly immediately on your left, before the light for South University: 1432 Washtenaw Ave. There is no fee for parking. CONTINUING EDUCATION A workshop for mental health professionals is cosponsored by the Michigan Association for Play Therapy and The Institute for Continuing Education. Continuing education credit is offered in the disciplines listed below. The program offers 6 contact hours, with full attendance required. The continuing education processing fee is $20.00 per person and may be included in the registration fee by checking the appropriate box. Applications for continuing education credit will be available at check in; attendees are required to sign-in upon arrival and sign-out upon departure on attendance sheets provided at the workshop registration area.
