Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioner 5 of the 20 hours required must be public health related. Local Anesthesia 3 of the required 20 hours must be related to the administration of local anesthesia such as pharmacology or other related topics. Three (3) of the hours may now be in communication skills for only the Dental Hygienist, not the Dentist Child Abuse 2 additional hours are required for relicensure, which can be found by typing Act 31 training on a search engine such as Yahoo or Google. If the course is 3 CE s only 2 can be used for relicensure. Radiology, 2 credit hours is required by the DEP every 4 years not for relicensure, can be online such as Dentalcare.com or in classroom. Since medical marijuana is legal in many states, we will learn what medical conditions it can be used to help and the different ways medical marijuana is sold. Course Objectives: v Describe the pharmacology and mechanism of action of non-opioid and opioid analgesics, as well as their potential for abuse. v Explain the intended role of non-opioid and opioid analgesics in the treatment of dental pain, as well as situations which may preclude their use. v Describe strategies useful in developing a pain management plan that is individualized for a patient s needs and underlying medical conditions. v Understand appropriate prescribing practices to utilize in everyday clinical situations. Tom Viola, BS, R.Ph., C.C.P. With over 30 years as a pharmacist, Tom Viola serves the professions of dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants as an educator, author and speaker. As a clinical educator, Tom is a member of the faculty of ten dental professional degree programs. He has instructed students in chemistry, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and local anesthesia. In addition, Tom has instructed hundreds of practicing dental hygienists in local anesthesia certification courses. As a published writer, Tom is well known nationally and internationally for his contributions to several dental professional journals in the areas of pharmacology, pain management and local anesthesia. In addition, Tom has served as a contributor, chapter author and peer reviewer for several dental pharmacology textbooks and national board exam review books. 3

It s a valid concern affecting millions of individuals. Americans spend over 2 billion dollars annually for fresher breath. Dental professionals are placed in the ideal position to offer solutions for an embarrassing problem. This course is designed to assist the dental professional in addressing oral malodor. In addition, it will empower the clinician to make courageous conversations about an uncomfortable topic with their patients. Course Objectives: v Describe the three classifications of oral malodor v Identify sources in the production of oral malodor v Describe various solutions for the prevention and treatment of oral malodor Linda Blackiston, RDH, BS Linda received her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from the University of Maryland Dental School after being a business owner for nine years. Her professional and clinical background includes corporate pharmaceuticals, general practice, periodontics, and staff positions in pediatric dentistry at the University of Maryland. Linda is manager of Professional Education for Philips Oral Healthcare. She is an industry author, writing and lecturing nationally. Linda volunteers with Mid-Atlantic PANDA (Prevention and Abuse Neglect Through Dental Awareness) providing courses on recognizing and reporting cases of abuse and neglect. Lina serves on the Samaritan Women Board of Directors, which is a long-term restoration program for victims of human trafficking.
