4 Chairperson s Report April 2012 March 2013 MDNZ continues its vision to reduce the incidence and impact of Macular Degeneration (MD) in NZ. In a Galaxy poll in April 2012 only 41% of New Zealander s aged 50+ knew that MD affects the eyes. Without awareness of risk factors and early symptoms of MD, many New Zealander s are missing the opportunity for effective treatments. MDNZ has committed to education through community and public seminars as well as distribution of printed material. The selection by Ryman Healthcare of MDNZ as their charity, created opportunity for events to be held at their 25 villages. These well attended meetings involved presentations from ophthalmologists and optometrists with assistance from RNZFB, Humanware, and MDNZ trustees. Public interest in information about MD was evident at 16 Research and Treatment public seminars, led by ophthalmologists with national representation from Whangarei to Invercargill. RANZCO have continued to be supportive to MDNZ and a Medical Advisory Group reviewed MDNZ materials and issues regarding MD in NZ. MDNZ Trustees have shared their talents and passion for the MDNZ vision while donating considerable time and energy. Professor Philip Polkinghorne and Naomi Meltzer retired as trustees after valuable contributions over three years. Ophthalmologists Andrew Thompson and David Squirrell along with optometrist and low vision specialist, Mike Frith, were welcomed as new Trustees. MDNZ s inaugural trustees, Sandra Budd, Viv and Allan Jones continue their significant contributions. Our high profile MDNZ Ambassadors, in their own unique way, have contributed talents and expertise to bring awareness of MD to a wider audience within the community. It is with real sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Sir Wilson Whineray who brought wisdom and expertise from his business and sporting experience. In September we farewelled our General Manager, Jeanine Gribbin and thank her for her contribution and enthusiasm over the previous year. She is replaced by Phillippa Pitcher who brings experience and expert business management along with a passion for MDNZ. Phillippa is looking forward to leading the MDNZ operation to the next phase of its development. We are grateful for on-going support, advice and experience from the Macular Disease Foundation Australia who have offered guidance to achieve good governance and advice towards meeting the needs and expectations of our MD community. 4 Macular Degeneration New Zealand

5 People who live with MD have shared their private journey in public seminars, through the media and on the website, offering inspiration and hope to others. These are powerful stories and have made a special contribution. MDNZ has already made a significant impact in New Zealand. An increasing number of ophthalmologists, optometrists, GPs, eye clinics, healthcare and community workers have requested MDNZ information to distribute to members of the MD community. GP and optometry associations have requested web-based educational modules and community groups have requested future talks. MD community, patients, families, friends and carers continue to use the 0800 phone support. I wish to acknowledge the dedication of the MDNZ Trustees, the energy and assistance of associate trustees, our GM, staff and volunteers. MDNZ continues to be challenged to meet its objectives and this collective expertise is making a difference. Dr Dianne Sharp Annual Report

6 Events & Activities Key activities for MDNZ during the year ranged from increasing awareness through Awareness Week (page 8), Ryman seminars (page 9), exhibition stands at medical conferences, a fundraising dinner, development of a Low Vision Information DVD and a Christmas party to acknowledge supporters. Conferences The attention of hundreds of medical and health care professionals was attracted when MDNZ displayed materials and talked to attendees at conferences during the year. In October 2012 at the NZAO conference in Auckland, Dr Dianne Sharp made a presentation which was well received by optometrists and dispensing opticians, many of whom visited the stand during their breaks. In March a wide range of health care professionals showed interest in the MDNZ stand. This was the first conference in which MDNZ involved student optometrists through the Optometry Student Association. This provided excellent support for MDNZ while giving the students a chance to mix with the attendees of the conference. 6 Macular Degeneration New Zealand

7 Christmas Party The 2012 Christmas party was held in the board room at Auckland Eye and was attended by over 50 people. This was an opportunity for MDNZ to say thank you to supporters and friends of MDNZ for their contribution during the year. MDNZ Ambassador John Adshead addressed the audience thanking people for their support and acknowledging the work of MDNZ. Dr Dianne Sharp also thanked those attending and those who were unable to attend, acknowledging that the support given provides significant encouragement for MDNZ to continue its work. Clear Vision Dinner Sponsored by and in conjunction with Sky City Hamilton the Clear Vision fundraising dinner was held at Sky City in Hamilton in April Featuring two Knights and a Dame; Sir Colin Meads and Sir Peter Leitch together with Dame Susan Devoy and NZ s silver medal Olympian BMX rider, Sarah Walker. These celebrities attracted an enthusiastic crowd locally from Hamilton and many travelling from Auckland. Local radio host, Ronnie Philips as MC and local Harcourts auctioneer, Brian King both contributed greatly to the evening taking their part in rousing the attendees to bid generously for the auction and to fill the donation envelopes leading to $46,000 raised at this event. Low Vision Information DVD Thanks to funding from Guardian Trust (James Russell Lewis Trust), RNZFB, plus support from Naomi Meltzer (Sight Loss Services), Maurice Sloane (Humanware), Viv Jones, Linda Ewing and the team at Logan Brooke, MDNZ produced a DVD titled Low Vision Services. The DVD has been well-received by members of the MD community who have received inspiration and ideas from the DVD of what they can do in their daily living to make life easier and to understand access to magnification and lighting aids and equipment to improve their quality of life, living with MD. 9 Ryman Supports MDNZ Annually Ryman Healthcare Ltd chooses one charity as their Charity of Choice for the financial year. In 2013 they chose MDNZ. This was excellent news for MDNZ and provided an opportunity to spread our awareness message and to provide education to a target audience. During July 2012 to May 2013 MDNZ utilised the voluntary contribution of local expertise to lead seminars in 25 Ryman Villages around New Zealand. Event number one involved ophthalmologists who made presentations to village residents between July and October, giving the attendees a good understanding of what MD is, the difference between wet and dry MD and provided general awareness of the severity of the disease. From October 2012 to May 2013 event number two was scheduled across all villages again. This time local optometrists led two sessions in each village an afternoon session for the residents and an evening session for residents to also invite family. At these seminars the attendees were made aware of the prevalence and impact of the disease with DVDs and slide shows. In addition RNZFB had a local person bring along aids they have available and they talked about their local services available. Maurice Sloane of Humanware was the key constant person who attended each of these seminars around New Zealand where he spoke to and demonstrated the Humanware range of lighting and magnification equipment and aids. In Auckland he was joined by low vision optometrist, Naomi Meltzer of Sight Loss Services. Head Office, resulting in a generous cheque of $230,000 being presented at the Hilda Ross Village in Hamilton in May MDNZ Ambassador Sir Colin Meads, assisted Chairperson, Dr Dianne Sharp and General Manager, Phillippa Pitcher to receive the cheque on behalf of MDNZ. Dr Sharp, in her thank you to Ryman advised the residents in the audience that we needed a big man to help us collect such a big cheque. The residents enjoyed mingling and chatting with Sir Colin over afternoon tea at the village. The residents and staff of the Ryman Villages contribute to the charity of choice by raising funds to meet targets with activities such as market days with all sorts of goods donated, baked or crafted to sell. The residents and staff raised $115,000 which was then matched by Annual Report
