1 Social & Behavioral Dimensions of Public Health Sonia Suchday, Ph.D. PSH 6935 Contact Information for Dr. Sonia Suchday: Course Description address: Phone: (718) /2680 Office Hours: Tuesday 10 am - 12 pm This course exposes students to aspects of the behavioral and social sciences relevant to public health. It is designed to make students more sophisticated analysts of health problems, by increasing their understanding of how individual and their social environment interact with health; Individuals are part of the environment - are agents of influence and are influenced by the environment. Major scientific theories and models of health behavior are presented early in the course. The remainder of the course focuses on important social factors and specific behaviors, with an emphasis on the science of primary and secondary prevention. Learning Objectives: students will be able to describe how behavior contributes to national patterns of morbidity and mortality. students will be able to cite measurement issues which complicate the study of public health s social and behavioral aspects. students will demonstrate their ability to apply health behavior theories to health promotion campaigns. students will be able to name methods of reducing risk behaviors (or increasing health behaviors) that have received empirical support. students will be able to discuss multiple social factors which influence health, including how such factors operate and may influence preventive interventions.

2 Required Text: Health Behavior and Health Education: Theory, Research, and Practice, 4th Edition Karen Glanz (Editor), Barbara K. Rimer (Editor), K. Viswanath (Editor) ISBN: Hardcover, 592 pages, September 2008 Recommended Readings: Salovey, P., & Rothman, A.J. (Eds.). Social Psychology of Health. Psychology Press: New York, NY Berkman, L.F., & Kawachi, I. (Eds.). Social Epidemiology. Oxford University Press: Cary, NC Green, L.W., & Kreuter, M.W. Health Promotion & Planning: An educational and ecological approach. 3 rd Edition. Mayfield Publishing Company: Mountain View, CA Culture, Health and Illness, 5th Edition Cecil G. Helman ISBN: pages, 2007 Course Grade: Assignment I: Health Behavior Description & Presentation 20% Presentation II: Research Proposal 25% Course Paper: Grant Proposal 30% Final Exam 20% Class Participation 5% Evaluation: Early in the semester students will select one health-related behavior of interest to them. That behavior will serve as the focus for the first two assignments described below. 20% On Tuesday, Oct 11 students will described the health-related behavior that they have selected. By Tuesday, October 11 students will submit a three-page description of the health-related behavior they have chosen. This description will tell what is known about the prevalence of the behavior (within a target audience if possible), and why it is relevant to public health.

3 30% Students will choose one of the theories discussed in class to serve as the focus of a proposal related to the health-related behavior they have selected. Examples of theories that can be used include: Health Belief Model Theory of Planned Behavior Transtheoretical Model Social Cognitive Theory The purpose of this proposal is for students to demonstrate that they can apply the theory to a program designed to influence a health-related behavior. Fifteen points will be awarded for explaining the major components of the theory and how they relate to each other. Fifteen points will be awarded for demonstrating how the model might be used to guide a preventive intervention. This discussion could include why the model was chosen for the behavior in question, and how the information called for in the model might be collected from the target population. This section should definitely include examples of program elements likely to result from application of the model. I will be looking for links between elements of the model and program components. The paper should be 15 pages in length (not including references), and double-spaced. It is due on Tuesday, December 20. Please follow the NIH grant guidelines in writing the proposal from the recommended text. Each proposal should have the following sections: A. Specific Aims B. Background and Significance C. Preliminary Studies D. Research Design & Methods 20% Students will present their proposals in class. The presentation will be graded on quality and clarity of the concepts and ideas presented. 5% Student grades will also be based upon class participation. In addition to daily attendance, participation will be judged by students engagement in class exercises, respectful attention to speakers and fellow students, and familiarity with assigned readings. 25% Exam
