3 About Mary s Place Mission Empowering homeless women, children and families to reclaim their lives by providing shelter, nourishment, resources, healing and hope in a safe community. What Mary s Place Does Mary s Place is an agency that provides a welcoming and accepting environment where homeless women, children and families can find day and night shelter, nourishment, resources, healing and hope in a safe community. Families are connected at Mary s Place Day Center each day for access to housing and employment resources. And Why Despite the improving economy, increasing numbers of homeless women and children are coming to Mary s Place. Currently, families who are receiving referrals to emergency and transitional housing have been on the waitlist weeks or months. While families wait to access services, many of them have nowhere to go. Mary's Place is there, standing in the gap, providing emergency family shelter for homeless families TONIGHT. The homeless women in our community range from young adults to seniors and represent diverse backgrounds in race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, education, and life experience. The children we see have often witnessed or experienced violence and are experiencing hunger, dislocation, uncertainty, anxiety and depression. Nearly half of the mothers we see have experienced domestic violence. All of our women and families live well below the poverty line, and many struggle with disabilities and mental health issues. Beginning in 2014 we began accepting homeless men with children into our emergency night shelters as well. Mary s Place Event Toolkit - Updated 8/4/15 3

4 At Mary's Place: we meet basic needs: food, showers, laundry, a place to be safe we provide tools to search for jobs, and invite women and families to use our address and phone number to receive mail and calls from prospective employers we get children connected back up with their schools and provide transportation, school supplies, and after school (and summer) activities we help women recovering from illnesses by providing a safe place during the day in our rest bed room we help women maintaining sobriety, amidst offers of drugs and alcohol we provide a safe, warm place for families to come inside, together each night we provide stability and safety, despite threats of violence Women and children are especially vulnerable on the streets, as many are recovering from domestic violence, assault, or trauma. Mary's Place is a safe and accepting place for these women and their children - a place where they can build relationships, experience hope and love, and find strength to develop their full potential to journey out of homelessness. Short Blurb Mary s Place provides a welcoming environment where homeless women, children and families can find day and night shelter, nourishment, resources, healing and hope in a safe community. Mary's Place is a safe and accepting place for these families - a place where women can build relationships, kids can be kids, and all can experience hope and love and find strength to develop their full potential to journey out of homelessness.
